Janice Elizabeth Powell
The graveside service for Janice Elizabeth Powell will be at 9 a.m. today at Eagle Point National Cemetery. The memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Alan Jackson of Westminster Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Mrs. Powell, 74, of Phoenix, died Monday (July 12, 1999) at her home after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.

She was born Janice Elizabeth Pitts on Sept. 28, 1924, in Winslow, Ariz., a daughter of Houston and Jennie Belle Pitts. The family moved to the Rogue Valley in 1927. She graduated from Medford High School in 1943 and attended junior college in Amarillo, Texas.
During World War II, she was active in local USO activities.
On Sept. 3, 1947, in St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Medford, she married Louis Powell, who survives.
Mrs. Powell was a secretary in deans' offices at Duke University in Durham, N.C., and at the University of Washington in Seattle. She also worked briefly for the Jackson County Veterans Office, and served as a teacher's aide at Howard Elementary School.
She was a charter member of the Oregon State Forestry Wives Association and was active in Cub Scouting in Tacoma, Wash.
Mrs. Powell was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Medford.
She enjoyed painting, gardening and animals, and demanded clean fingernails and good grammar from her boys.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three sons, William B., Medford, David N., Allentown, Pa., and Tyson H., San Francisco; two brothers, Champ Pitts, Santa Maria, Calif., and Houston Pitts, Lacey, Wash.; a sister, Louise Medicus, Apache Junction, Ariz.,; and five grandchildren. Two brothers, Lanse Pitts and Milton Pitts, preceded her in death.

Merle H. Woodward
The memorial service for Merle H. Woodward will be at 10 a.m. July 24 in Newman United Methodist Church in Grants Pass. The Rev. Bret Strobel will officiate. Private interment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.
Mrs. Woodward, 86, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (July 10, 1999) at Laurel Hill Nursing Center in Grants Pass.

She was born Merle Hershberger on Dec. 29, 1912, in Grants Pass and was raised in the area.
On Aug. 9, 1952, in Eugene, she married Bud Woodward, who survives.
She received a bachelor's degree from San Francisco State University, and later earned a master's degree from the University of Oregon in 1957.
Mrs. Woodward was a teacher with the Grants Pass School District for 34 years, teaching at Riverside, Redwood and South junior high schools.
She was a life member of the National Education Association and the Oregon Education Association, and served on state committees. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, where she was the treasurer for 15 years.
Mrs. Woodward was a member of Newman United Methodist Church, and was a Sunday school teacher.
She enjoyed fishing and camping.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a brother, Welton Hershberger, Seattle.

Elizabeth Swisher Clark
The memorial service for Elizabeth Swisher Clark will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Presbyterian Church in Rogue River. The Rev. John Cihak will officiate.
Mrs. Clark, 74, of Rogue River, died Monday (July 12, 1999) at her home.

She was born Elizabeth Swisher on May 31, 1925, in Bruneau, Idaho.
On Jan. 22, 1955, in Portland, she married Charles Clark, who survives.
Mrs. Clark received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Oregon in 1960. She went on to become a librarian, and worked at the Rogue River Library for 15 years and volunteered for many years after that. She also taught school in northern Oregon for two years.
She served as secretary for the St. Vincent DePaul Society in Rogue River and was a past member of the Rogue River Civic Club.
Mrs. Clark was a member of Our Lady of the River Catholic Church in Rogue River for 30 years.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Robert, Portland; a daughter, Carolyn Marks, San Mateo, Calif.; three sisters, Kate Allen, Gladstone, Ann Hale, Boise, Idaho, and Barbara Kissane, St. Louis, Mo.; four brothers, Jerry Swisher, Visalia, Calif., Perry Swisher, Boise, Idaho, Jack Swisher, Bellevue, Wash., and Ralph Swisher, Chevy Chase, Md.

Michael Thomas Liter
The funeral for Michael Thomas Liter will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Conger-Morris Chapel. Chaplain Joe McMann of Rogue Valley Medical Center will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Medford.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today in Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. The Rev. William Dillard of Sacred Heart Catholic Church will officiate.
Mr. Liter, 56, of Medford, died Friday (July 9, 1999) in Medford.
He was born Aug. 25, 1942, in Wabasha, Minn. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Los Angeles in 1974.
In 1967, he married Dolores Lee. They later divorced.
In 1984, he married Mary Thomas. They later divorced.
Mr. Liter enjoyed painting.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford.
Survivors include a daughter, Laura Shaar, North Hollywood, Calif.; and his former wives.

Diane Marian Dunn
Diane Marian Dunn, 87, of Grants Pass, died Friday (July 9, 1999) at her home. No service is planned.
She was born Diane Knapp on Sept. 21, 1911, a daughter of Robert and Lillian Knapp.
Survivors include her nephew, Donald Gregory Knapp, and his sons, David and Charles Knapp.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; and a brother, Donald Knapp.

James Vanderveen
The memorial service for James Vanderveen will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Trinity Presbyterian Church in Medford. The Rev. Jay Milojevich will officiate.
Mr. Vanderveen, 82, of Medford, died Saturday (July 10, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Luctor, Kan.
In 1943, in Salt Lake City, he married Anne Kamstra, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley eight years ago from Norco, Calif.
Mr. Vanderveen was a carpenter in California.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
Mr. Vanderveen was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.
He enjoyed fishing, camping and the outdoors.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, James R., Ashland, Bill, Phoenix, and Allen J., Corona, Calif.; a daughter, Patricia Vanderveen, Norco, Calif.; four sisters, Elizabeth Hoek, Allendale, Mich., Edith Schemper, Shelton, Idaho, Elda DeJong and
Bernie Moore, both of Denver; and six grandchildren.
Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday in Conger-Morris Funeral Home, Medford.

Esther Elsie Walden
The funeral for Esther Elsie Walden will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. John Lutheran Church in Eagle Point. The Rev. Ronald T. Norris of St. John Lutheran Church will officiate. A cryptside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Mountain View Cemetery,
Oakland, Calif.
Mrs. Walden, 80, of Medford, died Monday (July 12, 1999) in Medford.

She was born Esther Elsie Panttaja on July 26, 1918, in Reedley, Calif., a daughter of Matti and Sophia Panttaja.
In October 1949, she married Horace Earl Walden, who died in 1966. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Reedley three years ago.
Mrs. Walden was a beautician.
She attended St. John Lutheran Church in Eagle Point, and was a member of the Finnish Lodge.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas, Medford, and David, Eureka, Calif.; a sister, Helen Sage, Huntington Beach, Calif.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven siblings.
