Marciel Mizerak
Marciel (Marcella Heinbuch Mizerak) 91, daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, poet, educator, author, environmentalist, political activist, meditator. Marciel died peacefully at her home in Ashland, Oregon, on Saturday, November 5, 2005, after a long and productive life dedicated to developing and using the gifts she had been given.
Marciel was born on July 24, 1914, in Chicago, Illinois, to Louise Schmidt and Walter Heinbuch. When she was seven years old, her family moved to Southern California, where Marciel would spend the next 65 years. California proved to be the perfect environment to nurture her keen intelligence and her wide-ranging interests. She attended college in California, majoring in Art, and beginning a life-long love of learning.
In 1932, Marciel married a newspaper man, Ernest Mizerak, who worked at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. The couple had two sons, Stephen and Anton. For a time, she worked as a fashion counselor and lectured in major stores throughout California. She taught voice and directed amateur theater productions at the Little Theater in Centinella, California. Ernest died in 1973. Marciel went on to develop Marciel's Fabric Gallery, a successful South Bay fabric store. She learned the Transcendental Meditation technique in the 1970s and was a favorite at the local meditation center, enthusiastically supporting Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's program for creating peace on earth. Her meditation practice deepened her thinking about the ways in which the human brain functions.
In 1987, Marciel left her beloved Southern California for the peace and beauty of Ashland, Oregon, where, at the age of 73, she designed and built the French-style home of her dreams on Scenic Drive.
Throughout her life, Marciel used her creative intelligence to support the education of children and the protection of the environment. She developed a kindergarten environmental program while in Southern California, but her interest in the human brain became her passion when she moved to Southern Oregon. She worked in collaboration with the Southern Oregon University on a program for children with dyslexia. She produced a video for classroom teachers on another program she developed to teach children about the wonder of the human brain. She cared deeply about the environment and worked on the protection of Lithia Creek. She also put her ample energies into the political causes in which she believed.
She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ashland.
In her eighth decade, Marciel wrote a book entitled Jesus for the New Millenium, in which she integrated her understandings about Jesus, energy, meditation, activism, the brain and transcendence. In the introduction to the book, she describes herself as a "seeker who regards truth as a profound mystery revealing itself, bit by bit, when we are ready."
Marciel is survived by her sons, Stephan Mizerak of Ashland, Oregon, and Anton Mizerak of Mt. Shasta, California, twin grandsons, Christopher and David Mizerak, sister Phyllis Kugeman of Roseburg, OR, and brother Walter Heinbuch of Canyon Lake, CA.
In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to an organization that cares for the homeless.
A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, in Ashland, at 87 4th Street, on Saturday, November 12, at 1 p.m. Further inquiries about Marciel may be made through her son Anton, 530-926-3740, anton@shastasong.com.
