Betty B. Hulse

The memorial service for Betty B. Hulse will be at noon Monday in Bethel Assembly of God in Medford. Pastor Tim Olson will officiate.

Mrs. Hulse, 76, of Medford, died Friday (Sept. 3, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She was born Betty B. Jones on Aug. 27, 1923, in Olney, Ill.

In 1952, in Grants Pass, she married Vernon Hulse, who survives.

Mrs. Hulse was a homemaker.

She enjoyed gardening, yard work and people.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Robert Taylor, Victorville, Calif.; and one grandson.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Inc., Medford.

Arvilla D. Greif

Arvilla D. Greif, 94, of Medford, died Thursday (Sept. 2, 1999) at her home. A private service was held. Interment was in Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

She was born Arvilla Cannon on Oct. 18, 1904, in New Pine Creek. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1942 from New Pine Creek.

On Oct. 11, 1947, in Carson City, Nev., she married Al Greif, who died in 1964.

Mrs. Greif was the owner of Griffin Creek Dairy in Medford for several years.

She played the Hawaiian steel guitar and piano, and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include two daughters, Mildred DeShazer and Clara Beer, both Medford; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Her first husband, Emil Buhl, died in 1961.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Loren E. Messenger

The memorial service for Loren E. Messenger will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, in First United Methodist Church in Ashland. The Rev. Michael Powell will officiate.

Mr. Messenger, 95, of Medford, formerly of Ashland, died Monday (Sept. 6, 1999) in Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Oregon University Foundation, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, OR 97520.

He was born Sept. 11, 1903, in Winona, Minn., a son of James and Lora Messenger, and was raised in Vermont. He received a bachelor's and a master's degree from the University of Idaho at Moscow. He earned a doctorate in education from the University of Oregon.

On Aug. 10, 1926, in Moscow, Idaho, he married Ruby Tuttle, who died in 1996.

Mr. Messenger was a professor of psychology at what is now Southern Oregon University from 1928 to 1968.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Messenger was a member of First United Methodist Church, Ashland.

Survivors include a son, Robert, Talent; three daughters, Marjorie Bulkley, Phoenix, Rose Mary Crawford, Klamath Falls, and Barbara Nordtvedt, Melbourne, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Dorothy Lenderman

Dorothy Lenderman, 89, of Eugene, formerly of Medford, died Sept. 3, 1999, in Eugene. A private service is planned. Interment will be in Eastwood I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Medford.

She was born April 28, 1910, in Washougal, Wash., a daughter of Tilman and Sarah (Hart) Carman. She moved to Medford in 1920, and graduated from Medford High School in 1928. She lived in the Applegate area until she moved to Eugene in 1988.

On Feb. 9, 1941, in Prineville, she married Noah Lenderman, who died in 1962.

Mrs. Lenderman was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Medford.

Survivors include a nephew, Robert Shelby, Eugene; and a niece in Milwaukie. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Nina Barker, in 1992, and Jean Shelby, in 1990.

Arrangements: England's Eugene Memorial Chapel.

Donald B. Tingle

A memorial service, at a date to be announced, will honor longtime Rogue Valley jazz musician Donald B. Tingle, who died Sept. 8, 1999.

Mr. Tingle, 81, of Medford, was a co-founder of the Southern Oregon Traditional Jazz Society, founder and leader of the Rack of Bones band and a board member of the Medford Jazz Jubilee.

In earlier days, he played briefly with Les Brown's "Band of Renown" and then in Lake Tahoe nightclubs with the Mills Brothers, Nat "King" Cole, Sammy Davis Jr. and others.

Born Feb. 4, 1918, in Philadelphia, Mr. Tingle grew up in Modesto, Calif., began studying the trombone at age 8 and by the time he was 13 won first place in the state of California solo contest.

He played trombone through his school and college years, including the University of California at Berkeley (class of 1939) and was a charter member of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra.

During the 1930s and 1940s he led jazz and dance bands in California's San Joaquin Valley, ensembles ranging from trios to 18-piece "big bands."

His stint with Les Brown came in 1942.

Mr. Tingle moved to Ashland in 1968, playing periodically with the Rogue Valley Symphony and other local musical combos, principally the Firehouse Five Dixieland jazz group, with which he performed for more than 25 years.

In 1968-69 he assisted Max McKee, director of bands at then-Southern Oregon College, in developing the college's stage band program.

He worked in the finance departments of the cities of Modesto and Ashland, retiring from the latter in 1981.

His work with the Traditional Jazz Society, of which he was president for six years, came during the 1980s, when he was also the founder and leader of the Rack of Bones, a five-trombone and rhythm section jazz ensemble. He retired from active music performing in 1997.

He was also a car enthusiast, building hot rods, and an avid gardener.

Mr. Tingle is survived by his wife of 59 years, Georgette Coulter Tingle; three sons, Bryce of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Dennis of Austin, Texas, and Brian of Ashland; a daughter, Carolyn L. Mutamba of Alexandria, Va.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society of Oregon or the Rogue Valley Medical Center Hospice Foundation.

Joseph `Jay' Pinckard

Joseph Arnold "Jay" Pinckard, 92, of Rogue River, died Thursday (Sept. 9, 1999) at Fair View Transitional Health Center in Grants Pass. A private graveside service will be held Monday at Woodville Cemetery in Rogue River.

He was born on Nov. 16, 1906, in Lebanon, Mo., a son of Joseph A. and Grace Ione Mestre Pinckard.

After graduating from Santa Cruz High School in California, Mr. Pinckard received a bachelor's degree in botany and plant pathology in 1930 from Oregon State University. He received his master's degree in plant pathology and bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin, and his doctorate in plant pathology in 1934.

He was active in the botany and plant pathology departments at Louisiana State University until 1974. After retirement he continued research and development of plant sciences in his own laboratory. He held a number of patents and awards for scientific achievement.

He moved to Rogue River from the San Francisco Bay area in 1990.

Mr. Pinckard was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Phytopathological Society, the Entomological Society of America and the Louisiana Academy of Science.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie B., Rogue River; a son, Joseph A., Wichita, Kan.; a daughter, Judith Lucille Covey, Denver; a brother, James, Grants Pass; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Cora MacDonald Neill

The memorial service for Cora MacDonald Neill will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. The Rev. B.J. Holland will officiate. Private inurnment will be in the Chapel of Reflections Mausoleum Columbarium, Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.

Mrs. Neill, 88, formerly of Ashland, died Wednesday (Sept. 8, 1999) in Vancouver, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwest Washington Medical Center Foundation, Hospice Southwest, P.O. Box 1600, Vancouver, WA 98668.

She was born May 3, 1911, in Cimarron, N.M., a daughter of David Hoyt Wood and Maude Evelyn Thompson. She received an associate degree in education from Western Oregon State College in Monmouth, and a bachelor's degree from what is now Southern Oregon University. She moved to Ashland from Klamath Falls in 1956.

On Aug. 20, 1960, in Ashland, she married former Ashland mayor (1953-1968) and city councilman Richard "Dick" Neill, who died in 1991.

Mrs. Neill taught primary school (kindergarten through third grades) in Klamath Falls, Central Point, Gold Hill and Oregon City, retiring in 1980. From 1961 to 1982 she and her husband co-owned and co-operated Pioneer Village Shopping Center at the intersection of Oak, A, and Pioneer streets in Ashland, with Mr. Neill's sister and brother-in-law, Donzella and Everett McGee.

Mrs. Neill was past matron of the Alpha chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 1 in Ashland; past worthy high priestess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem; past president of the American Association of University Women; and a member of Alpha Delta Kappa.

Survivors include two daughters, Helen Elizabeth "Betty" MacDonald Clumpner, Anchorage, Alaska, and Margaret Louise MacDonald Khilnani, Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Rena I. Hagler

The funeral for Rena I. Hagler will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Memory Gardens Mortuary in Medford. The Rev. Rod Howell of Central Neighborhood Church in Phoenix will officiate.

Mrs. Hagler, 85, of Medford, died Thursday (Sept. 9, 1999) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 380 S.E. Spokane St., Suite 110, Portland, OR 97202, or to the Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Home Health, 691 Murphy Road, Suite 236, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Rena Kaufman on Aug. 29, 1914, in Rapid City, S.D.

On Oct. 8, 1932, in Roseburg, she married James Hagler, who preceded her in death. She lived in the Rogue Valley most of her life.

Mrs. Hagler was a waitress in the Rogue Valley for many years. She was also a foster care provider in her own home, retiring in 1990.

She was a member of Central Neighborhood Church in Phoenix.

Survivors include a son, Denis G. Hagler, Medford; a daughter, Rena "Dee" Curtiss, Medford; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Chris Hagler, in 1990, by her second husband, Walter Miller, in 1969, and by three sisters, her twin, Zena Kaufman, and Violet Zamrzla and Iris Dicks.

Friends may pay their respects from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday in Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.
