Bessie May Sabo

The memorial service for Bessie May Sabo will be at 4 p.m. today in Memory Gardens Mortuary. Pastor Henry Zollbrecht of Valley View Seventh-day Adventist Church will officiate.

Mrs. Sabo, 86, of Medford, died Friday (Dec. 10, 1999) at Three Fountains Nursing Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Better Life Television, P.O. Box 766, Grants Pass, OR 97528.

She was born Bessie Minder on Dec. 19, 1912, in St. Paul, Minn.

On Sept. 14, 1932, in Brookfield, Ill., she married Cornell A. Sabo, who survives.

Mrs. Sabo was a dental assistant for her husband, a homemaker and a seamstress.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading, scrapbooks and traveling.

Mrs. Sabo was a member of the Valley View Seventh-day Adventist Church, Medford.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Cornell A. Jr., Medford; three daughters, Harriet J. Pflugrad, Medford, Judy E. Wood, Talent, and Carol M. Anda, Tucson, Ariz.; three brothers, Benjamin Minder, Salem, Warren Minder, Portland, and Wallace Minder, Riverside, Calif.; two sisters, Anne Davis, Portland, and Berniece Sayles, Lake Oswego; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Philip L.B. Thurmond

Philip Lee Bates Thurmond, 88, of Gold Hill, died Monday (Dec. 6, 1999) at his home. No service is planned. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery in Grants Pass.

Memorial contributions may be made to The ARC, P.O. Box 54, Grants Pass, OR 97528.

He was born May 6, 1911, in Cody, Wyo.

Mr. Thurmond was a welder in the aircraft industry. He also taught welding.

For 52 years he was a member of Auburn Lodge 592 AF & AM in Des Moines, Iowa, and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine of Des Moines.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth A. Brown, Grants Pass, and Janet Rosecrans, Gold Hill; a son, Richard E., Whittier, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hull & Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass.

Robert Raymond Myers

The funeral for Robert Raymond Myers will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford. The Rev. Earl Phillips of the Apostolic Faith Church will officiate. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mr. Myers, 83, of Medford, died Wednesday (Dec. 8, 1999) at a foster home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Apostolic Faith Church, c/o Youth Dept., 285 Sunrise Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Nov. 1, 1916, in Portland.

On May 15, 1937, in Medford, he married Alyce E. Frohreich, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1920 from Portland.

Mr. Myers worked for Hubbard Hardware from 1937 to 1942, when he went to work for the U.S. government at the Medford airport. He then worked for Padgham Glass and Millwork in 1950. In 1955, he worked in construction for A.R. Dubs Construction Co., retiring in 1979.

He was a member of the Apostolic Church in Medford, where he taught Sunday school for 34 years. He was a violinist and sang in the church choir.

Mr. Myers enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, hiking and the coast.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Ronald W., Medford; a sister, Bernice James, Medford; four grandsons, three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth L.

Friends may pay their respects from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Memory Gardens Mortuary.

John N. Reid

Dr. John Noble Reid, 84, of Medford, died Tuesday (Dec. 7, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford. A private family graveside service will be held. Inurnment will be in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 98, Ashland, OR 97520.

Dr. Reid was born July 12, 1915, in El Centro, Calif., a son of Mary and Felix Reid. He was raised in El Centro and graduated from El Centro High School. He graduated from Walla Walla College and the Loma Linda University medical school.

On July 11, 1939, in Loma Linda, Calif., he married Ann Tartar, who survives.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a Navy physician attached to a troop transport unit that served in the South Pacific. He went ashore with waves of American soldiers to set up mobile hospitals to care for the wounded. He received five battle stars.

Following the war, Dr. Reid began a medical practice in Goldendale, Wash., and then spent four years in Detroit, Mich., where he completed a surgical residency at Harper Hospital, located within Wayne State University. He held the position of chief surgical resident there until moving to Ashland in 1955. He practiced in the Rogue Valley until 1971, when he moved to La Grande. Following retirement in 1985, he returned to Ashland and later moved to Medford.

Dr. Reid was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was active in development and expansion of Ashland Community Hospital, Rogue Valley Medical Center and La Grande Hospital. At the time of his retirement he was the chief of staff at La Grande Hospital.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Rotary Club.

Dr. Reid was involved in the development and management of the Mount Ashland ski area in the 1960s.

He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, John N. Jr., Medford, and Thomas T., Ashland; a daughter, Laurie Ann Carlson, Phoenix; a brother, F.G., Hendersonville, N.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one brother.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Crematory & Funeral Home, Ashland.

Manuel M. Medina

The memorial service for Manuel Machado Medina will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Shady Cove South Baptist Church (formerly known as the Playhouse), 150 Chaparrel, Shady Cove.

Mr. Medina, 61, of Shady Cove, died Wednesday (Dec. 8, 1999) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born April 22, 1938, in San Jose, Calif.

Mr. Medina, a baker for more than 30 years, owned and operated California Bakery in Mountain View, Calif., for 16 years. He moved to the Rogue Valley 10 years ago from Los Altos, Calif. For the past 10 years, he was the chef for Two Pines Restaurant in Shady Cove.

He was a member of the Palo Alto Elks Lodge in California.

Mr. Medina enjoyed cooking, playing cribbage and the outdoors, especially duck hunting and fishing.

Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Saeger, San Jose, Calif., and Denise Medina, Manteca, Calif.; a son, Mario Montiel, Wiesbaden, Germany; four brothers, Joaquin, Jacksonville, Anthony, Port Orchard, Wash., Raymond, San Jose, Calif., and Frank, Sunnyvale, Calif.; four sisters, Amelia Vargas, Eagle Point, Cecilia Vargas, Central Point, Rita Matthias, Sunnyvale, Calif., and Josephine Nagli, Port Orchard, Wash.; and three grandchildren. A sister, Rosemary Contento, died in September 1999.

Helen M. Nunes

Helen Marguerite Nunes, 83, of Central Point, died Tuesday (Dec. 7, 1999) at her home. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Children's Miracle Network, Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, 691 Murphy Road, Suite 236, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born May 6, 1916, in Placer, a daughter of Frank and Elmetta (Rogers) Capp.

On Feb. 16, 1931, in Yreka, Calif., she married James H. Nunes, who preceded her in death. She moved to the Rogue Valley 56 years ago from Hornbrook, Calif.

Mrs. Nunes and her husband owned and operated Nunes Sand and Gravel Company.

She enjoyed cooking, ceramics, reading and traveling to Reno.

Survivors include three daughters, Pat Kerr, Eagle Point, Sharon Hawk, Central Point, and Susan Nunes, Reno, Nev.; three sons, Rob, caregiver, Central Point, Dave, Phoenix, and Gary, Stockton, Calif.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, James; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Patty McMurray

The funeral for Patty McMurray will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Hull & Hull Chapel, Grants Pass. Pastor Wes Winn will officiate. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. McMurray, 51, of Grants Pass, died Monday (Dec. 6, 1999) at her home.

She was born Patsy Lee Trantham on June 9, 1948, in Harbor. She was a native Oregonian.

On July 1, 1991, in Reno, Nev., she married Earl McMurray, who survives.

Mrs. McMurray was a certified nursing assistant for 26 years at Josephine Memorial Hospital, Providence Hospital and most recently at Rogue Valley Medical Center Transitional Care Unit.

She enjoyed square and round dancing and arts and crafts, including painting and quilt-making. Her work won many prizes at the county fair.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include her mother, Ilah Jones, Grants Pass; seven sisters, Fran Chamberlain, Rogue River, Cora DeMille, Grants Pass, Joyce Smith, Azusa, Calif., Elizabeth Smith, Garden City, Kan., and Pamela Ingram, Patty Jo Ingram, and Linda Ingram, all Everett, Wash.; five brothers, Kenneth Henshaw, Ashland, Leroy Leathers, Everett, Wash., Scott Jones, Glendale, and Kevin and Shane Trantham, both Wichita, Kan.

Friends may pay their respects from noon to 4:30 p.m. Monday at Hull and Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass.
