Elma Ione Cooper
The memorial service for Elma Ione Cooper will be at 10 a.m. today in Long & Shukle Memorial Chapel, Roseburg. Private interment will be in Roseburg Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Cooper, 93, of Medford, formerly of Roseburg, died Monday (Dec. 27, 1999) in a Medford foster home.
She was born Aug. 11, 1906, in Roseburg, a daughter of William T. and Clara J. (Wright) Mellor.
On Nov. 17, 1954, in Reno, Nev., she married George Victor Cooper, who died in 1974.
Mrs. Cooper worked for Viletta's Arts and Gifts in Roseburg, and as a bookkeeper for Standly Logging Company in Camas Valley.
She enjoyed crocheting, painting, cake decorating and embroidery.
Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Looney, Central Point and Donna Sabala McLean, Roseburg; two sons, Bill Dunham, Brightwood, and Buck Dunham, Hermiston; a brother, Eugene Mellor, Roseburg; a sister Bette McDonnell, Vancouver, Wash.; and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a twin sister and three brothers.

William Bowerman
William J. "Bill" Bowerman, 88, former head coach of the University of Oregon and U.S. Olympic track and field teams, and co-founder of the company that became Nike, Inc., died Friday (Dec. 24, 1999) at his home in Fossil. The memorial service will be held in the spring at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

He was born Feb. 19, 1911, in Portland, a son of Jay and Elizabeth Hoover Bowerman. He was raised in Fossil, the town his great-grandfather founded. He later attended Medford High School, where he became involved in athletics. He attended the University of Oregon, lettered in football and track, and graduated in 1934.
On June 22, 1936, in Altadena, Calif., he married Barbara Young, who survives.
Mr. Bowerman spent a year at Franklin High School in Portland before returning to his alma mater, Medford, teaching and coaching football, basketball and track. He remained at Medford High School for nine years. Medford athletic teams were state champions many times under his coaching.
In 1948, the University of Oregon hired him as head coach. His teams were conference champions many times, and national champions twice. He coached numerous All-Americans, Olympic medal winners and world record holders. In 1972, he was head coach of the U.S. Olympic track and field team.
While touring New Zealand with his world-record holding four-mile relay team, he discovered recreational jogging and introduced it to the U.S. as co-author of the book, "Jogging."
Mr. Bowerman was co-founder of the Nike Shoe Company. The most noteworthy of his inventions in running shoes are the waffle sole and wide-flared heel. He retired from the Nike Board of Directors and moved from Eugene back to Fossil.
In 1971, the U.S. Track Coaches Association honored Bowerman as coach of the year. He was a past chairman of the NCAA track and field rules committee, past president of the NCAA Track and Field Coaches Association, an assistant coach of the 1959 U.S. Pan American track and field team, conducted overseas clinics under the State Department, was a team official for the World University Games in 1970 and served on the National Summer Youth Fitness program for two years.
During World War II, he was decorated several times as a major in the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Tom, Eugene, Jay, Bend, and Jon, Fossil; and six grandchildren.

Jane Elaine Kilgore
Jane Elaine Kilgore, 55, of Jacksonville, died Sunday (Dec. 26, 1999) at her home. No service is planned.

She was born Jane Hammond on May 14, 1944, in Hillsboro. She moved to the Rogue Valley 20 years ago from California.
Ms. Kilgore was a homemaker.
She enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include her companion, Cliff Myers, Jacksonville; a son, Dean C., Medford; a daughter, Stacie Jones, Eugene; her mother, Wanda Hammond, Livermore, Calif.; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Hammond, in 1991.

Winnifred J. Wesley
Winnifred J. Wesley, 78, of Central Point, died Thursday (Dec. 23, 1999) at Three Fountains Nursing Center. No service is planned.

She was born Aug. 17, 1921, in Klamath Falls, a daughter of Joshua and Julia Swindler.
On March 29, 1940, in Klamath Falls, she married Clarence Wesley, who died in 1993. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Klamath Falls in 1993.
Mrs. Wesley was a surgical technician with Merle West Medical Center, retiring in 1987.
She was a member of the Catholic Church.
Mrs. Wesley enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include three daughters, Pauline Lingren, Central Point, Nancy K. Cox, Klamath Falls, and Brenda George, Riddle; a son, James Wesley, Klamath Falls; a sister, Mary Coder, Bend; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.

Andrew Sigurd Eck
Andrew Sigurd Eck, 94, of Klamath Falls, died Saturday (Dec. 25, 1999) in Ashland. A private service will be held later.
He was born July 5, 1905, in Arlington, Wash., a son of Andrew and Hilda (Sorensen) Eck.
In 1926, in Arlington, Wash., he married Mary Mhyre, who preceded him in death.
In 1961, in Klamath Falls, he married Lillian Gassman, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Eck owned a sawmill until 1941, when he moved to Klamath Falls. In Klamath Falls, he worked as a conductor for Southern Pacific Railroad, retiring after 30 years.
He was a member of the Railroad Brotherhood, and was active in The Klamath Temple, which is now Glad Tidings Christian Center.
Mr. Eck enjoyed wood cutting and gardening.
Survivors include a son, Wally, Jacksonville; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sons; a brother and a sister.

Bonnie Jean Ledford
Bonnie Jean Byrnes Ledford, 73, of Medford, died Friday (Dec. 24, 1999) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

She was born June 24, 1926, in Longview, Wash., a daughter of Alfred A. and Sarah Leota (Burcham) Byrnes. She graduated from high school in Longview in 1943.
In 1942, in Longview, Wash., she married George Henry Ledford, who died in 1977.
Mrs. Ledford worked in Juvenile Corrections for the State of Oregon in the Salem area for more than 30 years. Following her retirement, she moved to Tacoma, Wash., and most recently to Medford.
She was an avid reader, knitter and gardener. She enjoyed dogs and adopted many.
Survivors include two sons, Mark, Medford, and Brian, Tacoma, Wash.; a daughter, Becky Linn, Salem; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

William W. `Bill' Wood
William W. "Bill" Wood, 83, of Medford, died Thursday (Dec. 23, 1999) at Hearthstone. The memorial service will be announced later.

He was born May 7, 1916, in Omaha, Neb., a son of William R. and Fannie H. Wood.
On Dec. 29, 1937, in Omaha, he married Janice "Jackie" Gould, who survives.
Before moving to Medford, Mr. Wood worked for his family's lumber business in Omaha. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1955 from Omaha, and worked for various lumber businesses. He was involved with lumber manufacturing, manufacturing of mobile homes and travel
trailers, as well as real estate. He started the Health Food Mart in the K-mart Plaza, and retired in 1984.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Wendy Hillman, Lake Oswego; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by a brother, E.H. "Ted," in 1988.
