Russell W. Smith
The graveside service for Russell W. Smith will be Saturday at Trail Cemetery.
Mr. Smith, 85, formerly of Shady Cove, died Tuesday (Feb. 29, 2000) in Grants Pass.
He was born Sept. 10, 1914, in Danville, Ill.
On Jan. 12, 1937, in Glasgow, Mont., he married Vivian F. Hicks, who died in 1985.
Mr. Smith was a fireman for the city of Alameda, Calif., for 27 years. He moved to the Rogue Valley 32 years ago from Walnut Creek, Calif. He lived in Shady Cove for 25 years, and in Grants Pass for the past eight years.
He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Trail Community Church.
He enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include two daughters, Jill Smith, Grants Pass, and Sharon Rushin, Oakland, Calif.; a sister, Helen Leinen, Pawnee, Ill.; and a brother, Wayne, in Southern California.

Robert G. Young
Robert Gene Young, 76, of Portland, formerly of Medford, died Tuesday (Feb. 29, 2000) at a Portland hospital. No service is planned.
He was born June 15, 1923, in LeVoy, Wyo., a son of Lester S. and Minerva Eveline "Evelyn M." (Lang) Young. He moved to the community with his parents in 1924 and graduated from Medford High School in 1940.
On Sept. 3, 1943, in Reno, Nev., he married Bettie Lue Reich, who survives.
Mr. Young was a power house operator with the U.S. Corps of Engineers at Shasta Lake, Calif., McNary Dam, Umatilla, and Bonneville Dam in Bonneville. He also worked as a consulting engineer on a power dam in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a radarman.
Mr. Young was a member of the Masonic Order.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Robert G. Jr., Salt Lake City, and Bret M., Portland; a sister, Arlene R. Wolfe, Phoenix; two brothers, Donald K., Medford, and Charles B., Ashland; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Verda Delia Edsall
The funeral for Verda Delia Edsall will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Veterans Affairs Domiciliary Chapel in White City. Chaplain Jerry Gilmore will officiate. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.
Mrs. Edsall, 90, of Medford, died Tuesday (Feb. 29, 2000) at a foster care home in Central Point.

She was born April 4, 1909, in Ashland, a daughter of Alford and Lydia (Grow) Hopkins. She was raised in the Greensprings area. The Hopkinses were Oregon pioneers and had a land grant on the Applegate in 1855. Her mother's family, the Grows, homesteaded Immigration Creek in 1865.
On Dec. 21, 1929, in Medford, she married Thomas Lester Edsall, who died in 1971.
Mrs. Edsall was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary Post No. 2093 from 1948 to the present, and the Rebekah Pythians. She supported the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and volunteered at local senior service centers for many years.
Mrs. Edsall enjoyed playing bingo, get-togethers with friends and family gatherings.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol A. Moody, Phoenix, and Bernice L. Florey, Eagle Point; a son, Alvin B., San Diego; a brother, Vernon Hopkins, Pinehurst; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer; and three sisters, Mary, Jessie and Hazel.

Gene W. Shelton
Gene W. Shelton, 75, of Springfield, Mo., formerly of Ashland, died Feb. 23, 2000, at his home. The memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 26, in Springfield, Mo. Interment will be in Springfield National Cemetery.

He was born June 30, 1924, in Wayton, Ark., a son of John and Dora Shelton.
Mr. Shelton worked in fire management for the U.S. Forest Service in Ashland before retiring to the Ozarks.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the Reserves after 20 years.
Mr. Shelton was a member of the Baptist church.
Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, Lois A. Shelton, Springfield, Mo.; a son, Terry, Medford; a daughter, Chris Dalton, Springfield, Mo.; three brothers; one sister; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Barbara Lucille Layton
The graveside service for Barbara Lucille Layton will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Eagle Point National Cemetery. Blackstar Whitewolf will officiate.
Mrs. Layton, 62, of Eagle Point, died Monday (Feb. 28, 2000) at her home.

She was born Dec. 13, 1937, in El Paso, Texas, a daughter of William and Hellie (Russell) Jackson. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1947 from El Paso, Texas.
On Sept. 23, 1955, in Eagle Point, she married Joseph Layton, who survives.
Mrs. Layton received her master's in speech pathology from Western Oregon State College in 1987.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Layton enjoyed making jewelry, rock collecting, art and antiques.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Sid, Central Point; a daughter, Lori Striplin, Medford; her mother, Nellie Jackson, Eagle Point; and two brothers, John Jackson, Phoenix, and Sid Jackson, Medford.

D. Diane Hufteling
The graveside service for D. Diane Hufteling will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Siskiyou Memorial Park. Pastor Patt Herdklotz of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Rogue Valley will officiate.
Mrs. Hufteling, 71, of Medford, died Tuesday (Feb. 29, 2000) at her home of cancer.

She was born Dolores Diane Scardaccione on Oct. 7, 1928, in Bismarck, N.D., a daughter of Mary Hudson. She moved to Grants Pass as a young girl and graduated from Grants Pass High School.
On Oct. 31, 1947, in Grants Pass, she married Robert J. Hufteling, who survives.
Mrs. Hufteling was a secretary and teacher's aide at McLoughlin Junior High in Medford for many years. After her retirement from Medford School District, she worked for Youthworks in a program for pregnant and parenting teens.
She was a volunteer at Committed Alliance to Strays and rescued and cared for many cats in her home. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and a longtime member of Take Off Pounds Sensibly.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Michael, Medford; two daughters, Donna Whitehead and Beverly Box, both Phoenix; two brothers, Gerald and Harland Hudson, both Grants Pass; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Leland Clay Breedlove
The graveside service for Leland Clay Breedlove will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rock Point Cemetery in Gold Hill. The Rev. Earl Best will officiate.
Mr. Breedlove, 71, of Gold Hill, died Monday (Feb. 28, 2000) at his home.
He was born Sept. 27, 1928, in Sterling City, Calif.
On June 4, 1949, in Vienna, Austria, he married Hildegaurd Hofmann, who survives. He lived in the Rogue Valley most of his life.
Mr. Breedlove was a mechanic, retiring in 1990. He also worked as a baker for Fluhrers Bakery in Medford from 1950 to 1970.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Breedlove enjoyed hunting, fishing and flower gardening.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, William, Gold Hill; a daughter, Rhonda Jones, Wauconda, Wash.; a brother, Roland, Junction City; a sister, Sharon Primo, Eagle Point; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Paul, in 1971.
