Ilene Grimes
1919-2003
Ilene Annette Trunnell Yates Grimes, a life-long resident of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 25, at the age of 84 from cancer.
A service will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Cottage Grove.
She was born to parents Hugh and Esther (Anderson) Trunnell Sept. 13, 1919, in the same Cottage Grove home she died in.
She attended Latham Elementary and was a 1942 graduate of Cottage Grove High School.
She attended Oregon State College and received a master's degree from the University of Oregon in 1962.
She married Robert Yates in 1942 and they were divorced in 1971.
In 1980, she married Robert Lee Grimes, a former high school classmate.
She worked in the Home Education Program in the Eugene School District where she taught for several years before moving to Olympia, Wash.
She owned and operated Browser's Used Book Shop in Olympia before moving back to Cottage Grove.
She lived on the Century Farm built by her parents.
Her hobbies included her family history, mountain climbing, traveling and spending time with her family.
She was active with the Cottage Grove Historical Society.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cottage Grove, where she originally joined in 1934.
She is survived by husband Bob Grimes; sons John Yates of Cottage Grove, Tom Yates of Eugene and Bob Yates of Eugene; sister Alyce Hansen of Port Ludlow, Wash.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and many more who called her "Grandma."
After the service, interment will be at Fir Grove Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be sent to McKenzie-Willamette Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Harry Dawson
1938-2003
Harry Dawson, 65, of Cottage Grove died Sept. 27 after a long illness.
A celebration of life and potluck will be Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. at 709 S. First St. in Cottage Grove.
He was born in 1938 in Billings, Mont., to Harry and Flora Dawson.
He entered the National Guard in 1954 and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955 and served until 1961.
He moved to Cottage Grove in 1966.
He married Gloria Dawson in Reno, Nev., in 1966.
They lived in Cottage Grove for the last 36 years.
He drove long-haul truck for 33 years and retired in 1999.
His hobbies were golfing with his sons and family and gambling with his wife in Reno, Nev.
He is survived by his wife Gloria Dawson; sons Dan Dawson, Dave Dawson and daughter Deb Dawson of Cottage Grove, daughter Melody Dawson of Salem; stepchildren Pat Plourd of California, Joe Plourd of Bend, Barbara Plourd of Phoenix, Ariz., Gen Plourd of Springfield and Mike Plourd of Rockaway Beach; grandchildren Clayton, Celsey, Lindsey, Austin, Sean, Devin, Destiny, Britton and Stanley of Cottage Grove and two great-grandchildren.
Mildred L. Safley McCall
A memorial service for Mildred L. Safley McCall, 84, of Roseburg will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church.
She died of natural causes.
She lived most of her life in Cottage Grove until the last 13 years.
Lorraine Crawford
1919-2003
OAKLAND — Lorraine Pearl Nuzman Crawford of Oakland, Ore., died Oct. 5, 2003 of heart failure.
She was 84. The funeral was held Oct. 12.
She was born June 17, 1919, in Centralia, Kan., to Aurthor and Jenny Valentine Werner Nuzman.
She married Jesse Crawford on Feb. 2, 1957.
They bought their home at Rice Valley in 1962, where she lived for the last 41 years.
Crawford worked as a registered nurse, after completing training at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.
She moved to Oakland in 1962.
Her interests included her family, camping, gardening and reading.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Sutherlin and belonged to the Women's Aglow Fellowship.
She was also a Douglas County senior companion.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include six daughters, Dena Jacobson of Seminole, Fla., Linda Kinney of Pelham, Ala., Michele Flanagan of Irvine, Calif., Cindy Benzel of Yoncalla, Mary Nichols of Palmdale, Calif., and Jeanne Rabinowitz of Ventura, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A service was held Oct. 12 at the Assembly of God Church in Sutherlin.
Burial followed at Valley View Cemetery in Sutherlin.
The Chapel of the Firs in Sutherlin is in charge of arrangements.
Nova Simmons-McClintic
1908-2003
Nova Leona Simmons McClintic, 95, died Oct. 1 of age related causes.
A funeral was held Oct. 4.
Simm-ons-McClintic was born March 7, 1908, in Imnaha to Jasper and Amy Barnes Simmons.
She married John McClintic in 1930. He died in 1965.
She and her brothers and sisters worked on the family homestead, where they grew apricots and tomatoes.
Chief Joseph's tribe would pass by their home in the spring and fall, and her parents bought moccasins from them for their daughters.
Her family lived in Mount Angel for a year before settling in Eugene in 1920.
She finished grade school, but her parents could not afford to buy books for her to attend high school.
She worked in the hop fields as a check girl and later in the bean fields, eventually becoming a yard boss.
She served as a Cub Scout leader.
She wintered in Arizona for 20 years and her interests included going to the desert and collecting rocks.
She enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting.
She also enjoyed taking walks and walked a mile every day until she was 94.
She will be remembered for saying that, "walking was good for the soul, plus you never knew what you were going to see."
Survivors include a son, Roger McClintic of Cottage Grove; a brother, Bob Simmons of Alaska; two sisters, Vivian Harper of Alabama and Violet Adams of Albany; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
The service was held at Lane Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home in Eugene.
Burial was at Lane Memorial Gardens.
