Richard ‘Rick’ A. Pate
The funeral for Richard "Rick" Allen Pate will be at 2 p.m. today at Hillcrest Chapel, Medford. The Rev. Michael Powell of the United Methodist Church in Ashland will officiate.
Mr. Pate, 35, of Medford, died Saturday (Aug. 5, 2000) at his home.
He was born Aug. 22, 1964, in Medford, a son of Jack and Nancy Gordon. He graduated from Medford Senior High School in 1982 and lived in the Rogue Valley all his life.
On Nov. 3, 1990, in Ashland, he married Ann M. Woodard, who survives.
Mr. Pate was a carpenter.
He was an avid Miami Dolphins fan and enjoyed carpentry, riding his dirt bike and gardening.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Nicholas, Sonny and James, all Medford; two brothers, Paul Pate, Medford, and John Young, Sacramento, Calif.; six sisters, Connie Todd, Linda Collins, Tracy Caster, and Rhonda Meier, all Medford, and Dawn Tyler and Connie Herrera, both Sacramento, Calif.; and his grandfather, Hamilton Gearey, Medford. He was preceded in death by his father, Sonny Pate; and his grandmother, Betty Gearey.

Luella Wickstrom Morris
The funeral service for Luella Wickstrom Morris will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland. The Rev. John Braund will officiate. Private inurnment will be in the Grandview Cemetery, Bonners Ferry, Idaho.
Mrs. Morris, 91, died Thursday (Aug. 3, 2000) at her home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 98, Ashland, OR 97520, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
She was born March 3, 1909 in Leaf Mountain, Minn. Her family moved to Bonners Ferry Idaho, in 1912. Following high school graduation, she attended Eastern Washington State College, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English.
She taught school for four years in a one-room schoolhouse in Endicott, Wash., and boarded with a family in town. She later returned to Bonners Ferry to teach.
On June 7, 1943, at Salt Lake City, she married Raymond R. Morris, who preceded her in death in 1982.
She obtained a master’s degree in education from what is now Southern Oregon University and taught fifth grade at Briscoe Elementary School in Ashland for 24 years, retiring in 1974.
She was a member of the Oregon Retired Educators Association Unit 3 Jackson County, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Beta Sigma Phi.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and a host of friends and former students. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Friends may pay their respects on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.
Frank T. Rudiak
Frank T. Rudiak, 87, of Ashland, died Saturday (Aug. 5, 2000) at Ashland Community Hospital. A family memorial service is planned.
He was born on May 6, 1913, in Lyndora, Penn. He enjoyed spending time with his family, jazz music, the violin, and animals.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, two daughters, Pamela Biela and Carol Ann Lunt, four grandchildren, and two sons-in-law.

Lloyd Leonard Whiteside
The graveside service for Lloyd Leonard Whiteside will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Pastor Tim Shields of Rogue Valley Christian Church in Medford will officiate.
Mr. Whiteside, 85, of Medford, died Thursday (Aug. 3, 2000) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
He was born May 21, 1915, in Central Point, the only son of Edgar and Alta Buena (Boston) Whiteside.
On June 14, 1936, in Medford, he married Dorothy Tye, who survives. He lived in the Rogue Valley all his life.
Mr. Whiteside was a building contractor in home construction.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Whiteside attended Rogue Valley Christian Church.
He enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Robert Steven, Central Point, four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John Leonard, in 1987.

Bruce Robert Johns
The Mass of Christian burial for Bruce J. Johns will be at 9 a.m. today at Our Lady of the River Mission, at Hope Presbyterian Church, 515 Broadway, Rogue River.
The Rev. John Cihak will officiate. Interment will follow at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
Mr. Johns, 72, of Rogue River, died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) at his home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of the River Building Fund, P.O. Box 1596, Rogue River, OR 97537.
He was born March 20, 1928, in Wausau, Wis.
On Oct. 19, 1946, in Wausau, Wis., he married Josephine Agnes Frymark, who died in 1998. In 1954, they moved to Covina, Calif., from Wausau. They moved to Rogue River in 1984.
Mr. Johns was a drafsman for Honeywell Corporation in California for many years.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Johns was a member of Our Lady of the River Catholic Community, Rogue River Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 4116, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Azusa, Calif.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, boat racing and caring for his two dogs, Putsee and Sassy.
Survivors include four daughters, Pamela Torees, Shady Cove, Kathleen Abel and Roberta Chavez, both Grants Pass, and Diane Gerdin, Lake Tahoe, Calif.; his mother, Martha Johns, Wausau, Wis.; a brother, Bernard, Wausau, Wis.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Friends may pay their respects from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass.
Virginia ‘Jean’ Williams
Virginia "Jean" Williams, 86, of Eagle Point, died Saturday (July 22, 2000) in Eagle Point. No service is planned.
She was born Virginia Jean Swing on Aug. 15, 1913, in Seattle. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1975 from Lake Tahoe, Calif. In 1983, she moved to Lake Chapala, Mexico, and lived there until 1998, when she returned to the Rogue Valley.
In September 1984, in Aquadulce, Texas, she married Martin Williams, who survives.
Mrs. Williams was a secretary for the city of San Jose in California and for Lockheed Industries until her retirement.
In Mexico, she was a member of the Lake Chapala Garden Club and the Lake Chapala, Mexico Society. She was also a member of the Casa Hilda Orphanage Support Group and Fund Raising Committee in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Maureen Calhoun, Eagle Point, and Kathleen Starr, San Jose; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Gretchen Kay Arnold
The graveside service for Gretchen Kay Bechtel Arnold will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends, hosted by Becky Arnold, will follow at 1 p.m. at the home of Barbara Ferguson, 1277 Gardendale Ave., Medford.
Mrs. Arnold, 54, of Medford, died July 14, 2000, at her home from complications of colon cancer.

She was born Althea Holt on Dec. 2, 1945, in French Camp, Calif., and was adopted in 1946 by Robert and Gladys Bechtel of Grants Pass. She graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1964, and received a bachelor’s degree in medical technology from Oregon State University and Oregon Health Sciences University in 1968.
In 1966, in Grants Pass, she married Steven Arnold, who survives.
Mrs. Arnold worked in the medical technology field in Corvallis, Eugene and Coos Bay before moving to Medford, where she was a medical technologist for 22 years at the Providence Medford Medical Center lab.
Her search for her birth parents, and her experiences as a foster and adoptive parent, made her knowledgeable in adoption issues. She helped other adoptees find their birth parents.
Mrs. Arnold volunteered for more than 10 years on children’s issues, especially with the CASA program, where she advocated for abused and neglected children who had come under the jurisdiction of the court. She was also a mentor to new CASA volunteers and served as board chairman of a Citizens Review Board overseeing children under the guardianship of the Oregon State Services to Children and Families. KTVL awarded her the "10 Country Spirit Award" in March in recognition of her services to children.
She attended Applegate Christian Fellowship.
Mrs. Arnold enjoyed traveling, singing, sewing and Bible study.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Douglas, Portland; an adopted daughter, Tabitha Arnold, Salem; a brother, Fred Bechtel, Westbrook, Conn.; a half-sister, Marla Harris, Lockeford, Calif.; a half-brother, Ron Wahl, Stockton, Calif.; and her birth mother, Helen Holt, Stockton, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Gladys Bechtel.
