Julius ‘Jay’ Sweeney

The private graveside service for Julius "Jay" Sweeney will be held Thursday at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Sweeney, 77, of Medford, died Sunday (Aug. 13, 2000) in Medford.

He was born March 9, 1923, in Pineville, La., a son of William and Betty (Book) Sweeney.

In 1953, in Los Angeles, he married Marguerite Vaughn, who died in 1977.

Mr. Sweeney was a self-employed building contractor, retiring in 1988. He moved to Medford in 1989 from Anchorage, Alaska.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.

Mr. Sweeney enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include a son, Walter Everett, Medford; a brother, Albert, Dallas, Texas; one grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Beulah F. White

The memorial service and celebration of the life of Beulah F. White will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Memory Gardens Chapel in Medford. Wood Hunter will officiate. A graveside service will follow. Her son, Donald Michael White will officiate.

Mrs. White, 87, of Jacksonville, died Thursday (Aug. 10, 2000) at Three Fountains Nursing Home in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jacksonville Loaves & Fishes, c/o IOOF, P.O. Box 883, Jacksonville, OR 97530.

She was born Nov. 11, 1912, in Grants Pass, a daughter of Marcus and Mattie Ann Fryer. She graduated from Rogue River High School in 1933.

On April 12, 1943, in Reno, Nev., she married Richard G. White, who died in 1987.

Mrs. White worked and cooked for miners at the J.D. Lewis Mine of the Rogue River in the 1930s. During the 1940s, she taught dance classes in Los Angeles, and had dancing parts in MGM movies. She also worked with her husband who was a baker in California, Nevada and Oregon, and helped him until his retirement from the Medford Fluerer Bakery in the 1950s.

Mrs. White operated Forest Creek Kennels in Jacksonville through the early 1970s and sold dachshunds and Chihuahuas to pet shops around the country. In addition to caring for the elderly in her home and at the Jacksonville Senior Guest Home, she cared for at least 160 foster care children.

She enjoyed gardening and her Jacksonville home was a showcase for rare and unusual plants. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband in their motorhome, sewing and knitting.

Survivors include a son, Donald M., Coquille; five stepchildren, Robert L., Lake Oswego, Roland C., Albany, Richard A., Milwaukie, and Helen E. Frost, Bandon; an adopted son, Woody Hunter, Jacksonville; two adopted sisters, Maxine Armstrong and Elva Corrigan, Grants Pass; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Geraldine M. McMahill, in 1998.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Eugene Francis Hopf

The funeral for Eugene Francis Hopf will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Perl Funeral Chapel. The Rev. David Croy, retired, of Medford First Baptist Church, will officiate.

Mr. Hopf, 81, of White City, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National WWII Memorial Fund, American Battle Monuments Commission, Attn: GR048, P.O. Box 96074, Washington, D.C. 20090-6074.

He was born Sept. 3, 1918, in Minneapolis.

On Oct. 26, 1951, in Minneapolis, he married Ana Peterson, who survives.

Mr. Hopf owned Fidelity Printed Products Inc., in White City for 20 years.

During World War II, he served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941-1946. He also served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1946 to 1948. He received the American Campaign Medal and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.

Mr. Hopf enjoyed photography, traveling at home and abroad, and playing cards with family and friends.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Janice Bettenburg, Central Point; two sons, David, Medford, and John, Ashland; two sisters, Lorraine Henke and Leona Gibbons, both Minneapolis; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leo; and a sister, Margaret Zimmerman.

Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Richard M. Minton

The graveside service for Richard M. Minton will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Mr. Minton, 65, of Medford, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 27, 1934, in Odin, Ill., a son of William and Mary Minton.

On April 3, 1955, in Hayward, Calif., he married Crysta Harris, who survives.

Mr. Minton was a carpenter. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1964 from Fremont, Calif.

He was an avid hunter. He enjoyed fishing, farming and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Richard M. II, Medford; three daughters, Amy Stegall, Eagle Point, Jessica Berry, Medford, and Jennifer Preston, Phoenix; four sisters, Bonnie Zentner, Fremont, Calif., Velma Crume, Reno, Nev., Ellen Smith, Hernando, Miss., and Betty Graber, Reno, Nev.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Jean Minton.

Friends may pay their respects from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Cindy Lynn Sarvis

The memorial service for Cindy Lynn Sarvis will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at 2830 Barclay Road, Medford. A potluck will follow the service.

Ms. Sarvis, 45, of Winnemucca, Nev., formerly of Medford, died Aug. 6, 2000, in Winnemucca, Nev. Interment was in Winnemucca.

She was born March 20, 1955, in Klamath Falls, a daughter of Arnold B. and Dianne (Reeves) Sarvis. She lived in Medford in 1980.

Ms. Sarvis enjoyed singing, playing guitar, camping and art.

Survivors include her parents, Arnold B. and Dianne Sarvis, Medford; and a sister, Cherri Ann Scott, Medford.

Arrangements: Albertson Funeral Home, Winnemucca, Nev.

Margaret Alene Pattan

The memorial service for Margaret Alene Pattan will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Harvest Baptist Temple, Medford. Pastor Bob Gass will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Pattan, 72, of Medford, died Saturday (Aug. 12, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 20, 1928, in Medford, a daughter of Clemma Samuel and Opal Marie (Walker) Finley.

On Nov. 25, 1966, in Reno, Nev., she married Joe Pattan, who survives. She lived in the Rogue Valley all her life.

Mrs. Pattan was a member of Harvest Baptist Temple of Medford.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, needlework, scrapbooking and spending time at the beach.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, William Houston, Bend, and Jon Houston, Moreno Valley, Calif.; three daughters, Sharil Catlett and Kellie Graham, both Medford, and Leslie McLaughlin, Richland, Wash.; a stepson, Bob Pattan, Medford; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Harold W. Salter

The memorial service for Harold W. Salter will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Perl Funeral Chapel. A Masonic Lodge representative will officiate.

Mr. Salter, 83, of Medford, died Monday (Aug. 14, 2000) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201, or the Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation Hospice, 691 Murphy Road, Suite 236, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born July 24, 1917, in Greeley, Neb., a son of Harry and Pearl Salter, and attended elementary and high school in Greeley, Neb. After high school, he moved to Los Angeles, where he was a carpenter for O.D. Odegaard until he entered the Army Air Corps.

On May 1, 1942, he married Georgia L. Prewett, who survives. He moved to the Rogue River from California in 1946 and continued working as a carpenter.

Mr. Salter was a self-employed general contractor. He moved to Medford in 1971 and was active in the building trade until his retirement in 1981. He was named Builder of the Year in 1974 by the Home Builders Association of Jackson County.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, flying transport planes over India.

Mr. Salter was one of the original organizers of the Valley of the Rogue Bank, serving as director for 20 years. He also served 11 years on the Rogue River School Board and seven years on the Jackson County Planning Commission.

He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Order and a lifetime member of Warren Lodge No. 10 in Jacksonville. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and was active in the Hillah Temple Shrine.

Mr. Salter was a member of the Rogue River Presbyterian Church.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Jack, Medford, and Ray, Roseville, Calif.; a daughter, Barbara Garrett, Portland; two sisters, Edna Thompson, Laramie Wyo., and Dorthy Lyons, Grand Junction, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Edgerton; and two brothers, Ray and E.R. "Buck" Salter.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.
