Otha T. ‘Bill’ Turman
The memorial service for Otha T. "Bill" Turman will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Red Lion Hotel, 200 N. Riverside Ave., Medford.
Mr. Turman, 68, of Central Point, died Thursday (Sept. 28, 2000) at his home.
He was born Sept. 26, 1932 in Houston, a son of Otha and Maud (Forbis) Turman. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1946 from Texas. On Jan. 17, 1959, in Medford, he married Nelda Hale, who survives.
Mr. Turman was an office equipment salesman and technician for Jewett Office Supply in Medford. He later owned and operated Turman Floor Covering in Medford. At the time of his illness, he was employed part-time with Millennium Technology Services in White City.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Turman was a minister in the Central Point Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, serving as presiding overseer at the time of his illness. He was active in the Regional Kingdom Hall Building Program, circuit and district convention administration, and directed many Bible dramas.
He was a musician and played the guitar and piano. He was also an artist. He enjoyed oil and watercolor painting, carving and stained glass.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Kevin, Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, John, Salem; two sisters, Donna Uppendahl, Prineville, and LeWahna Whiteman, Tigard. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and David Michael.

Myrtle Evelyn Graham
The graveside service for Myrtle Evelyn Graham will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
Mrs. Graham, 66, of Eagle Point, died Sunday (Oct. 1, 2000) at her home.
She was born Sept. 13, 1934, in Tulsa, Okla., a daughter of Orville and Bertha Dalton. On July 25, 1950, in Lordsburg, N.M., she married Robert L. Graham, who survives. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1966 from Ukiah, Calif.
Mrs. Graham was a homemaker. She enjoyed canning, gardening, fishing and birdwatching.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Levida Ford, Central Point, Barbara Maerz, Eagle Point, and Betty Garcia, Gold Hill; a brother, Orville J. Dalton, Ukiah, Calif.; three sisters, Peggy Metcalf, White City, Mary Pruitt, Central Point, and LaHoma Olar, in Oklahoma; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daugher, Bennie Jo Tibbets, twin sister of Betty Garcia.
Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.
Elwood Clair Smith
The funeral for Elwood Clair Smith will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Evans Valley Bible Church in Rogue River. Pastor Mike Fieguth will officiate. The graveside service will follow at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens in Grants Pass.
Mr. Smith, 84, of Rogue River, died Sunday (Oct. 1, 2000) at Royale Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center, Grants Pass.
He was born June 2, 1916, in Altoona, Pa., a son of Sidney and Daisy (Stewart) Smith. On Sept. 28, 1938, in Cumberland, Md., he married Dorothy Dearmit, who survives.
Mr. Smith was a welder. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1977 from Phoenix, Ariz.
He enjoyed fishing, metal detecting, building bird houses and traveling.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Elwood Smith Jr., Wimer; a brother, Sherwood, Tyrone, Pa.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers; and two sisters.

William M. Mattox
William M. Mattox, 89, of Medford, died Saturday (Sept. 30, 2000) at Hearthstone. No service is planned.
He was born May 18, 1911, in Cairo, Ill. On May 28, 1942, he married Virginia Barkley, who died in 1991. He received a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1934 from Rice University, then Rice Institute, in Houston.
Mr. Mattox was chief of operations for the Federal Housing Administration in Houston. He lived in Huntsville, Texas, Albuquerque, N.M., and Atlanta, Ga., before moving to the Rogue Valley in 1999.
He enjoyed playing the banjo, traveling and golf.
Survivors include a daughter, Katy M. Reed, Medford; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Givens.

Hubert W. Callaway
The graveside service for Hubert W. Callaway will be at 3 p.m. today at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens in Grants Pass.
Mr. Callaway, 78, of Grants Pass, died Friday (Sept. 29, 2000) at his home.
He was born May 5, 1922, in Eugene, a son of James and Ina Callaway. On Jan. 17, 1976, in Reno, Nev., he married Jerline Reese, who survives. He had lived in Grants Pass for the past 54 years.
Mr. Callaway served in the U.S. Army as a tank driver during World War II.
He enjoyed geography, animals, football and basketball.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Terri Kerlinger, Medford, and Lisa Wetzel, Minneapolis; a son, David Callaway, Grants Pass; three stepsons, Nick McManus, Grants Pass, Wayne McManus, Fort Smith, Ark., and David McManus, Tulsa, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis, in 1990; and a brother, Wayne, in 1944.

Rara ‘Nan’ Rucker
Rara "Nan" Rucker, 89, of Medford, died Sunday (Oct. 1, 2000) in Medford. A private memorial service will be held.

She was born Rara Kate Ryde on July 24, 1911, in Larned, Kan. She graduated from LaCrosse High School in Kansas. She entered nursing school at Bethany Methodist Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., and then moved to Greeley, Colo., where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1932.
On April 3, 1934, in Greeley, Colo., she married Robert Rucker, who died in 1964.
After moving to California, Mrs. Rucker worked in obstetrics and delivery rooms in San Jose and Palo Alto hospitals. She moved to Medford in 1943, and worked in the labor and delivery rooms for both the old Community Hospital and Sacred Heart Hospital, until it closed in 1960. She then worked at Rogue Valley Medical Center until her retirement in 1974.
She enjoyed deep-sea fishing and sports, especially football and basketball.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn Ward, Central Point; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Doris Mae Marshall
An open house celebration of the life of Doris Mae Marshall will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the home of Bob Kirkwood, 3412 Cheyenne Drive, Grants Pass.
Mrs. Marshall, 86, of Ashland, formerly of Rogue River, died Sept. 25, 2000.

She was born Sept. 6, 1914, in Martinsville, Ill., a daughter of Charles and Elsie Grace Oberlink. She grew up in Brownstown, Ill. After high school, she studied music at the University of Chicago.
In 1938, she married Leonard Joseph Marshall. Eight years later, they moved to Long Beach, Calif.
In Long Beach, the Marshalls owned and operated a grocery store. Mrs. Marshall also gave organ and piano lessons in Long Beach, Calif., for many years and had an organ class called Mae’s Melody Makers. They moved to Rogue River in 1972. Following her husband’s death in 1996, she moved to Ashland to live with her daughter, Sally.
Mrs. Marshall was active in the community. She was involved in PEO, Bridge Club, Republican Women, Organ Club and Garden Club. She taught piano lessons in Rogue River for 25 years, and played for many churches in the Rogue Valley.
She enjoyed playing tennis, riding her bike, playing the organ and piano, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, Dave; a daughter, Sally Marshall Kirkwood; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
