Ethel Marie West

The funeral for Ethel Marie West will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery.

Mrs. West, 89, of Jacksonville, died Saturday (April 29, 2000) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, P.O. Box 1663, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born March 9, 1911, in Jacksonville, a daughter of Nelson and Ina (Stoker) Pursel, a pioneer Oregon family. She attended Little Applegate School until the fifth grade, when her family moved to Medford. She graduated from Medford High School in 1928.

Her grandfather came to Oregon in 1880 and settled in the Upper Applegate area known as the Pursel Community. The community had a school and a post office, where he served as postmaster from 1898 to 1904. Her father, Nelson, operated a sawmill at Yale Creek from 1908 until the 1940s. Her mother taught school in Applegate for 57 years.

On April 13, 1929, in Medford, she married Fred R. West, who survives. They recently celebrated their 71st anniversary.

Mrs. West worked for Medford Ice for 12 years. She and her husband also owned and operated a dairy ranch in the Applegate area.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Little Applegate Sewing Club, and was a 50-year grange member, belonging to the Upper Applegate, Jackson County Pamona and Oregon State Grange as a sixth-degree member.

Mrs. West enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing and crafts.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Gary, Jacksonville; a daughter, Colista M. Bailey, Jacksonville; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Conger-Morris Funeral Home, Medford.

Lewis George Gilman

The memorial service for Lewis George Gilman will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Apostolic Faith Church in Medford.

Mr. Gilman, 90, of Medford, died Sunday (April 30, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Apostolic Faith Church, c/o Missionary Funds, 285 Sunrise, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born July 27, 1909, in Medford, a son of George G. and Martha (Schultz) Gilman. He graduated from Medford High School in 1930 and later from the Los Angeles School of Therapy.

In February 1995, in Grants Pass, he married Naomi Ione Gilman, who survives. He lived in the Rogue Valley his entire life.

Mr. Gilman was a self-employed massage therapist and was still practicing at the time of his death. He had previously helped operate the family dairy farm, Gilman Dairy, until 1953.

He was a member of the Apostolic Faith Church of Medford.

Mr. Gilman enjoyed gardening and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Marti Saunders, Medford, Marilyn Martinez, Jacksonville, and Virginia Hanlin, Redmond, Wash.; a brother, Les, Central Point; two sisters, Leona Blackmarr, Medford, and Laura Gorman, Brookings; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Martin Gilman, in 1992, and two sisters.

Harry J. La Chance

The graveside service for Harry Joseph La Chance will be at 2 p.m. today at Missouri Flat Cemetery in Grants Pass. Pastor Bob Wood of Redwood Christian Church will officiate.

Mr. La Chance, 89, of Grants Pass, died Sunday (April 30, 2000) at his home.

He was born Jan. 14, 1911, in Marinette, Wis., a son of Arthur and Adele La Chance. His family moved to Portland and then to Los Angeles when he was nine.

In 1936, he married Edlene Hunt, who preceded him in death.

Mr. La Chance and his wife were interior designers and had a studio in the San Fernando Valley in California. They were featured in Architectural Digest Magazine numerous times, including the April 2000 issue.

He was a member of the American Society of Interior Designers, Los Angeles Chapter, and served as its treasurer for several years.

Mr. La Chance was an award-winning ballroom dancer and danced until he was 80. He was also an avid bridge player.

He enjoyed swimming, flower arranging, sitting by the river and walking in the garden.

Survivors include a son, Harry Joseph Jr., Grants Pass; a daughter, Beverly McKenzie, Palm Desert, Calif.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

George C. Haynes

George Chester Haynes, 83, of Medford, died Sunday (April 30, 2000) at Three Fountains Nursing Home. No service is planned.

He was born Oct. 1, 1916, in Benton County, Ark., a son of Albert B. and Sadie J. (Andrews) Haynes. He moved to the Rogue Valley 42 years ago from California.

Mr. Haynes was a farm equipment operator, retiring in 1979.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include three daughters, M. Jane Matulich and Carolyn M. Gilbeau, both Stockton, Calif., and Nancy F. France, Sutter, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

William H. Milhoan

The memorial service for William H. Milhoan will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rogue Valley Christian Church in Medford. Private inurnment was held at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Milhoan, 82, of Medford, died Friday (April 28, 2000) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504, or the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 117 S.W. Taylor, Portland, OR 97201.

He was born Nov. 30, 1917, in Keysor, Colo. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1926 from Colorado.

On June 4, 1944, in San Francisco, he married Lola R. Elliott, who survives.

Mr. Milhoan was a mill worker at various lumber companies in the Rogue Valley, retiring in 1979.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Mr. Milhoan was a member of the Medford Elks.

He enjoyed reading and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Victor, San Francisco; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Ellis, and a sister, Lillian Holt.

Blossom 'Dollie' Wilson

The graveside service for Blossom "Dollie" Wilson will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rock Point Pioneer Cemetery, Old Highway 99, Gold Hill. Pastor Pete Lunsford of Klamath Falls will officiate.

Ms. Wilson, 63, of Ashland, died Tuesday (May 2, 2000) at Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland.

She was born March 18, 1937, in Medford, a daughter of Francis and Blossom (Durkee) Governor.

Ms. Wilson was a homemaker.

She enjoyed art and camping.

Survivors include a son, Bob, Klamath Falls; two daughters, Dana Bockelman, Klamath Falls, and Diane Winters, Sacramento, Calif.; her father, Francis Ivan Governor, Medford; her mother, Blossom Marie Ritter, Medford; two sisters, Cheryl Hall, Medford, and Iva May Wilson, Salem; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.
