Loren F. Soderlund

The memorial service for Loren F. Soderlund will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. A reception will follow in the Conger-Morris reception room. Truman Rennels of West Main Church of Christ will officiate. Private inurnment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mr. Soderlund, 68, of Medford, died Saturday (Oct. 7, 2000) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Aug. 3, 1932, in Weed, Calif., a son of Gus and Margie Soderlund. He moved to the Rogue Valley 66 years ago from Hornbrook, Calif. On July 1, 1976, in Medford, he married Marie V. Fraley, who survives.

Mr. Soderlund was a longtime Medford school teacher and coach. He taught at Washington and Lone Pine Elementary Schools, retiring in 1983.

He was a 30-year member of the Rogue Valley Football and Basketball Association.

Mr. Soderlund enjoyed gardening, travel, the beach and watching sports.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Mike and Kirk Soderlund, both Medford, and Tom Shafer, Medford; and a brother, Pete. He was preceded in death by a brother, Nells; and a sister, Deena Hughs.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Mary Jane Pomeroy

Mary Jane Pomeroy, 74, of Central Point, died Wednesday (Oct. 4, 2000) at her home. A private service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 691 Murphy Road, Suite 236, Medford, OR 97504, or the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, 3181 Sam Jackson Road, Suite 2200, Portland, OR 97201.

She was born Jan. 8, 1926, in Owatonna, Minn., the daughter of Ernest and Mary Woodfill. On Nov. 27, 1946, in Minneapolis, she married Corbyn "Pete" R. Pomeroy, who survives.

Mrs. Pomeroy was the senior administrator at the University of California, Santa Barbara, retiring in 1976. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1978 from Santa Barbara, Calif.

She enjoyed fishing, crafts, RV travel and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Cherilyn Hawk, Central Point; a brother, Ernest L. Woodfill, Minneapolis; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

Arthur Robert Melvin

The graveside service for Arthur Robert Melvin will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eagle Point National Cemetery Interment Shelter. The American Legion Honor Guard will officiate.

Mr. Melvin, 94, of Central Point, died Thursday (Oct. 5, 2000) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

He was born July 7, 1906, in Perth Amboy, N.J.

In November 1952, in Georgia, he married Dorothy Marie Kieger, who died Oct. 6, 2000, at her home. They moved to Grants Pass from Jacksonville, Fla., in the 1950s and to Central Point in 1970.

Mr. Melvin served in the U.S. Navy, retiring as an aerial photographer.

He was a member of the Fleet Reserves.

Mr. Melvin enjoyed photography and was a ham radio operator.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary M. Smith, Escondido, Calif.; a son, Richard Smith, Los Angeles; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Dorothy Marie Melvin

The graveside service for Dorothy Marie Melvin will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eagle Point National Cemetery Interment Shelter. The American Legion Honor Guard will officiate.

Mrs. Melvin, 87, of Central Point, died Friday (Oct. 6, 2000) at her home.

She was born Dec. 28, 1912, in Minnesota. In November 1952, in Georgia, she married Arthur Robert Melvin, who died Oct. 5, 2000. They moved to Grants Pass from Jacksonville, Fla., in the 1950s, and to Central Point in 1970.

Mrs. Melvin was a secretary.

Survivors include a son, Eugene Kieger, in Georgia.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Helen M. Metzger

Helen M. Metzger, 81, of Central Point, died Saturday (Oct. 7, 2000) at her home after a long illness. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504, or the American Red Cross, 60 Hawthorne, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born April 25, 1919, in Seattle, a daughter of Henry and Edith Geldard. She spent most of her life in Seattle.

On May 20, 1941, in Kodiak, Alaska, she married Carl R. Metzger, who died in 1993.

Mrs. Metzger was an executive secretary for the American Red Cross in San Francisco for 20 years. She moved to the Rogue Valley 20 years ago from San Mateo, Calif.

She was a member of the Westside Neighbors Association and attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Medford.

Mrs. Metzger enjoyed reading and swimming at the YMCA.

Survivors include a son, Carl F., Central Point; a daughter, Gail Woodside, Windsor, Calif.; a brother, Harry Geldard, Havre, Mont.; and a sister, Gladys Triol, Seattle. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael R. Metzger.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

Dorothy Louise Shave

The memorial service for Dorothy Louise Shave will be at 2 p.m. today at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Medford. The Rev. Alan Jackson will officiate. Interment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. Shave, 76, of Medford, died Saturday (Oct. 7, 2000) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born March 17, 1924, in Los Angeles. She moved from Los Angeles to Grass Valley, Calif., where she graduated from high school. In November 1944, in Sacramento, Calif., she married Richard Shave, who survives.

Mrs. Shave worked as a secretary at the Naval shipyard in Seattle during World War II. In 1946, following her husband’s career, they lived in Pittsburgh, Portland and Detroit before settling in Orange County, Calif., in 1952.

She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church.

In her youth, she was active in many sports and enjoyed swimming and ice skating. She and her husband traveled extensively following his retirement. Slowed by diabetes since 1948, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Ronald, Cypress, Calif.; a daughter, Lynn McKean, Auburn, Calif.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Junia E. Graff

Junia E. Graff, 82, of Medford, died Tuesday (Oct. 3, 2000) at a foster home. The memorial service will be held later. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Medford Congregational Church, 1801 E. Jackson, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Junia Plumb on Aug. 15, 1918, in Ola, Ark. She received a bachelor’s degree in art and architecture from the University of Oregon in 1940.

On Feb. 27, 1942, in Portland, she married John Adolphus Graff, who died in 1981. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1948 from Portland.

Mrs. Graff was the founder of the Rogue Valley Handweavers Guild. Her career began during World War II, when she took weaving classes at the Portland Art Museum to help the GIs when they came home for rehabilitation. She devoted herself to weaving, designing and manufacturing clothing.

Mrs. Graff founded Chapter CP of the PEO Sisterhood in Medford in 1953, and was active in the Medford Congregational Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Dru An White, Medford; a son, John H., Floyds Knobs, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.
