Charlene L. Matthews
Charlene L. Matthews, 88, of Bellingham, Wash., formerly of Applegate, died Friday (Oct. 27, 2000) at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, Wash. At her request, no service is planned.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite church or charity.
She was born Dec. 20, 1911, in Kansas City, Kan., a daughter of Earl and Stella Thorpe. On Aug. 15, 1937, in Kansas City, Kan., she married Jerome B. Matthews, who died in 1987. They moved to California in 1947, and to Oregon in 1969.
Mrs. Matthews was a member of the Applegate Community Church in Applegate. She had recently moved to Whatcom County.
Survivors include her son, Mike Matthews, Bellingham, Wash.; a daughter, Linda Steffey, Petaluma, Calif.; a sister, Helen Smith, Camarillo, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Margery W. Hemple
A celebration of the life of Margery W. Hemple will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at Perl Funeral Home. The Rev. John Braund of Rogue Valley Hospice will officiate.
Mrs. Hemple, 85, of Phoenix, died Sunday (Oct. 29, 2000) at her home.

She was born Margery Jean Wentworth on April 25, 1915, in Seattle. She graduated from the University of California at Riverside. On Sept. 17, 1944, in Gaviota, Calif., she married Bryon Hoff Hemple, who died in 1969. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1971 from Hemet, Calif.
Mrs. Hemple was a retired teacher. She was also a substitute teacher in the Rogue Valley.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Women’s Association and was involved with Project Misdemeanant program.
Mrs. Hemple enjoyed swimming, farming and singing in the church choir.
Survivors include a son, James A., Medford; a daughter, Kathryn J. Hasha; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and five adopted grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Brewster.

Glenn Forest Johnston
Glenn Forest Johnston, 88, of Ashland, died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at Linda Vista Care Center. No service is planned.
He was born May 26, 1912, in Beach, N.D., a son of Charles Sumner and Lura May (Livermore) Johnston.
Mr. Johnston worked on a dairy farm, retiring at age 65. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1995 from Pomona, Calif.
He enjoyed racquetball and lawn bowling.
Survivors include a niece, Sherry Johnston, Ashland; two grandnieces and one grandnephew.

Raymond P. Staggers
The funeral for Raymond P. Staggers will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Memory Gardens Mortuary in Medford. The Rev. David Humphreys of the Church of Christ in Phoenix will officiate. A reception at the family home will follow the service. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.
Mr. Staggers, 73, of Medford, died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at his home.

He was born June 11, 1927, in Fort Worth, Texas. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1938 from Muleshoe, Texas. On May 12, 1948, in Medford, he married M. Darlene Moore, who died in April 2000.
Mr. Staggers worked in sales with Medford Tire Service, Plumley Logging, Empire Pacific Industry, Topper Homes and Smith Lumber, retiring in 1991. He lived in Ashland, Medford and Phoenix.
He served in the Merchant Marines and the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Staggers was a member of the Phoenix Church of Christ.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and his dog.
Survivors include two daughters, Lonnie Kurz, Jacksonville, and Ranae Staggers-Shurtz, Medford; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Charlotte Bak Madau
The memorial Mass for Charlotte Bak Madau will be at 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland. The Rev. Raymond Finerty will officiate. A reception will follow the service.
Mrs. Madau, 78, of Ashland, died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at her home.

She was born April 22, 1922, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., a daughter of Adam and Antoinette (Urban) Bak. She attended Niagara schools, where she graduated from high school. She returned to school at the age of 42 and received her associate’s degree.
In 1942, she married Maurice Madau, who survives. They moved to Lakewood, Calif., where they lived for 32 years. They moved to Ashland in 1979.
Mrs. Madau taught school as a teacher’s aide.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church. She was a longtime member of the Altar Society, and served on the Liturgy Committee. She was an ardent volunteer for 18 years at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Museum of Natural History.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Joseph M., Long Beach, Calif.; three daughters, Claudia Stockwell, Rogue River, and Christyn Madau Killeen and Caryn Madau, both Ashland; 10 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Mary Elizabeth McGill
Mary Elizabeth McGill, 84, of Talent, died Sunday (Oct. 29, 2000) at a foster home. A private service will be held later.
She was born Mary Beardsley on Oct. 5, 1916, in Strool, S.D. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1951 from West Slope, and received her teaching degree from what is now Southern Oregon University.
Mrs. McGill taught English and Spanish at Crater High School and Scenic Middle School, retiring in 1981.
She was a food drive volunteer, taking food to Mexico and Bolivia.
Mrs. McGill enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Garden Club in Beaverton.
Survivors include a son, David A. Denison, Talent; a daughter, Judith Taafuli, Lihue, Hawaii; a brother, Bill Beardsley, in Washington; two sisters, Florence Karbonski, Portland, and Alice Boutain, in Washington; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Denison; and a sister, Ruth Huber.

Ella Arthur Powell
The graveside service for Ella Arthur Powell will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eastwood Cemetery in Medford.
Mrs. Powell 87, formerly of Medford, died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) in Portland, at the home of her daughter.
She was born Jan. 17, 1913, in Wayne County, Ky., one of 13 children. Her family came to Oregon by covered wagon in 1913, settling in Medford in 1920. She attended schools in Medford and was a member of the Southern Methodist Church.
On Aug. 17, 1929, in Medford, she married Carroll Walker Powell, who died in 1988.
Mrs. Powell was a homemaker. She moved to Portland in 1967 and worked as a housekeeper for the University of Oregon Doernbecher Children’s Hospital until 1974.
She was a member of the Eagle Point Community Church and the Central Point Community Church where she taught children’s Sunday School classes and after school Child Evangelism classes.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara E. Scrivner, Greenville, S.C., and Ruth L. Gleason, Portland; a son, Carroll W. "Bud" Powell, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters.
