Cyril "Shorty" Still

A memorial service for Cyril "Shorty" Louis Still will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Scottish Rite Temple in Medford, with Chaplain Bill Hare officiating. Entombment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201.

Mr. Still, 99, of Medford, died Wednesday (Nov. 8, 2000) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 6, 1901, in Fields Landing, Calif. On Nov. 28, 1946, in Olympia, Wash., he married the former Fay C. Dawson, who died in 1980. On June 27, 1981, in Medford, he married the former Beulah M. Mathis, who died in 1987.

He lived in the Rogue Valley most of his life.

Mr. Still was a graduate of Fortuna High School in Fortuna, Calif. From age 14 until retirement at age 79, Mr. Still worked in the lumber business. He was a piling contractor for 25 years. He also was self-employed as a truck driver, bringing lumber down Dead Indian Memorial Road to the railroad. He worked for MEDCO for 15 years and was superintendent of Hamilton Bros. Lumber Co. in Crescent City, Calif., for five years and of COGAP in Medford for five years. He retired from Della Lumber Co. in White City after 11 years as a head grader.

He was a life member of the Blue Lodge, Warren Lodge No. 10 AF&AM in Jacksonville; Eastern Star Adarel Chapter No. 3 in Jacksonville; and the Hillah Temple of Ashland since 1952. He was a lieutenant for two years and a captain for four years of the Hillah Temple Wrecking Crew. He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1168 in Ashland.

Survivors include his sister, Frances Cook, of Fortuna; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Vern Still, and one grandson.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary.

Dorothy Jean Hoard

The memorial service for Dorothy Jean Hoard will be at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, at Idle Wheels Mobile Home Park Activity Center, 2252 Table Rock Road, Medford. The Rev. Flo Bohnert of Christ Unity Church will officiate.

Mrs. Hoard, 76, of Medford, died Tuesday (Nov. 7, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Unity Church of Medford Sunday School, 540 N. Holly St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Sept. 3, 1924, in Paso Robles, Calif. On Dec. 15, 1990, she married Ralph B. Hoard, who survives.

Mrs. Hoard was a landscape designer contractor in California and owned three different nurseries at various times. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1988 from Santa Barbara, Calif.

She was a volunteer reader for Start Making a Reader Today (SMART), at Howard Elementary School in Medford.

Mrs. Hoard was a member of Christ Unity Church of Medford, where she taught Sunday School.

She enjoyed crabbing and fishing at the coast, raising and arranging plants and flowers, and was known for her apricot jam.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, William B. Luther, Oceanside, Calif., and John Robert Luther, Santa Barbara, Calif.; two daughters, Marjorie Luther, Ashland, and Mary Rem, Santa Barbara, Calif.; two stepsons, Stuart Pirie in Jamaica, and Jim Hoard, Las Vegas; a stepdaughter, Anne McCready, Lakewood, Colo.; a foster son, Bill Henebry, Santa Barbara, Calif.; a brother, Jack Derby, Sacramento, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Mary Elizabeth Lackey

Mary Elizabeth Lackey, 49, of Central Point, died Tuesday (Nov. 7, 2000) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Oregon Chapter, 4445 Barbur Blvd., Portland, OR 97201.

She was born Nov. 22, 1950, in Iowa, a daughter of Donald and Mary Ross. In May 1981, in Reno, Nev., she married Denis Lackey, who survives.

Mrs. Lackey was a homemaker. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1988 from Santa Rosa, Calif.

She enjoyed crafts.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a brother and four sisters.

Mary Ynez Shaw

Mary Ynez Shaw, 84, of Medford, died Monday (Nov. 6, 2000) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. Private inurnment was in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Mary Ynez Fairchild on Feb. 25, 1916, in Jennings, La. On Oct. 1, 1938, in Seattle, she married Robert A. Shaw, who survives. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1951 from Seattle.

Mrs. Shaw was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Medford.

She enjoyed traveling and playing bridge.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Dennis A., Ventura, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Lillian Marion Bower

Lillian Marion Bower, 77, of Medford, died Friday (Nov. 10, 2000) at her home. The memorial service will be held later in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Aug. 15, 1923, in Oslo, Norway, a daughter of Halvard and Kristine Hansen. On June 13, 1964, in Santa Rosa, Calif., she married Lee N. Bower, who survives.

Mrs. Bower worked for the Bank of America in California for 10 years, and as an interior decorator for the Emporium in California. She also worked in real estate in Hawaii from 1978 to 1980. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1991 from Santa Rosa, Calif.

She enjoyed traveling, gardening and decorating.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, James Beach, Oakland, Calif., a daughter, Valerie Lembeck, Walnut Creek, Calif.; a sister, Evelyn Beasley, Santa Rosa, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Gertrude Clough Scott

Gertrude Clough Scott, 95, of Medford, died Tuesday (Nov. 7, 2000) at Three Fountains Nursing Center in Medford. A private service will be held.

She was born Nov. 1, 1905, in Lynn, Mass. On Dec. 1, 1927, in Philadelphia, she married Sheridan Wilson Scott, who died in 1974. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1954 from Florida.

Mrs. Scott was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church of Medford.

She enjoyed singing in the choir and painting.

Survivors include two daughters and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter in 1982.

"Ada" Lu Arant

"Ada" Lu Arant, 81, of Medford, died Friday (Nov. 10, 2000) at her home. No service is planned.

Mrs. Arant was born June 12, 1919, in Bisbee, Ariz., to John and Nellie Canaday. On July 6, 1936, she married A. Howard Arant, who died in 1997.

She was a bookkeeper.

Survivors include her son, Mike, of Medford; and daughter Nancy Arant Cheffings, of Eugene.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.
