John Henry Katzenbach

The funeral for John Henry Katzenbach will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Chapel in Medford. The Rev. Roger McKay of the Community Church in Williams will officiate. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Medford.

Mr. Katzenbach, 90, of Medford, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) in Medford.

He was born Dec. 9, 1909, in Bishop, Calif., a son of Henry and Olive Katzenbach. He moved to Bandon as a child, and later moved back to Southern California. He attended Grossmont High School in California, and was on the championship football team for the state of California, where he was awarded a gold football. He later attended the University of California at Davis.

On June 20, 1937, in Medford, he married Ann Swing, who survives.

Mr. Katzenbach worked for Standard Oil in Oceanside, Calif. He then moved to Vista, Calif., where he truck farmed. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1956 from San Diego County, Calif., and owned and operated a 212 acre ranch.

He was a charter member of the Elks in Vista, Calif.

Mr. Katzenbach enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, William, Eagle Point, and Charles, Medford; and a daughter, Robbin Webb, La Mesa, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Morris and William; and a sister, Jean.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Jerry Wiltse

Jerry Wiltse, 67, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (Nov. 11, 2000) at his home. A private service will be held later. Interment will be in Jefferson Cemetery, Albany.

He was born March 21, 1933, in Eugene.

Mr. Wiltse spent most of his life in the Salem area, moving to Grants Pass in 1999.

He enjoyed car rides around the valley.

Survivors include a brother, Roy, Phoenix; two sisters, Alberta Emery, Central Point, and Marita Hafar, Montague, Calif. He was preceded in death by a sister, Geneva Bittle.

Gladys See Lafferty

Gladys Francis See Lafferty, 101, who lived at the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000). No service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 626, Ashland, OR 97520.

She was born Jan. 17, 1899, in San Francisco, where she attended grade school and high school, and competed on the first swim team for Lowell High School.

Mrs. Lafferty trained as an ambulance driver in World War I. She moved to Ashland in 1972 from Santa Cruz, Calif., and to the Rogue Valley Manor in 1990.

Besides swimming until she was 96, she enjoyed hiking, fly fishing, French cooking, and playing the piano and organ.

Survivors include a son, Bill See, Guadalajara, Mexico; a daughter, Lolly Skillman, Apache Junction, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Donald William Johns

The funeral for Donald William Johns will be at 11 a.m. today at Trail Community Bible Church. The Rev. Ron Welch will officiate. The graveside service will follow at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Johns, 75, of Trail, died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trail Community Bible Church, 399 Old Trail Creek Road, Trail, OR 97541, or Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 691 Murphy Road, Suite 236, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Scottsbluff, Neb., and attended school in McGrew, Neb. On May 2, 1981, in Prospect, he married Darlene Dorsey, who survives.

Mr. Johns worked in construction as an excavation supervisor and explosives specialist, much of it overseas.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

Mr. Johns was a rock hound. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and his family.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Michael Minard, Riverton, Wyo.; two stepsons, Stephen O’Dell, Glide, and Kenneth O’Dell, Trail; a daughter, Donna Jones, Newport, Wash.; four brothers, Norman Johns, Darrell Roberts, Bob Roberts and Delmar Roberts, all Bayard, Neb.; three sisters, Eleanor Roberts, Denver, Billie Hopkins, Gering, Neb., and Joanne Emrick, in Nebraska; two half-sisters, Pat Howard and Doris Martin, both Bayard, Neb.; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Maynard; and a sister, Dottie Tillman.

Friends may pay their respects from 10 to 11 a.m. today at Trail Community Bible Church.

John Marvin Ward

The graveside service for John Marvin Ward will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Ward, 60, of Ashland, died Nov. 3, 2000 at Ashland Community Hospital.

He was born April 23, 1940.

Mr. Ward served in the U. S. Navy from 1958 to 1962.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Lawrence Myers Cauble

The graveside service for Lawrence Myers Cauble will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Pastor Don Holmes of Trail Christian Fellowship will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.

Mr. Cauble, 77, of Eagle Point, died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Feb. 6, 1923, in Dallas, Texas, a son of Frank Emerson and Ruth (Myers) Cauble. He attended schools in El Paso, Texas. On Sept. 1, 1946, in El Paso, he married Doris Sue Potter, who survives.

Mr. Cauble joined the U.S. Navy as a naval aviation cadet in 1942. In 1944, he saw action as a carrier fighter pilot in a number of World War II battles in the Pacific. He received two Distinguished Flying Crosses and three Air Medals. Following the war, he was a Navy test pilot and one of the Navy’s pioneering jet pilots. During his 26-year Navy career, he had many assignments in research and development of aviation weapons and tactics. He also served as commanding officer of a carrier-based light attack squadron. He retired in 1968 with the rank of captain and moved to Oregon.

For the past 30 years, he operated a cattle ranch in the Eagle Point area, and was an active member of the Jackson County Stockman’s Association, serving as present in 1983-84. He was also a member of the Oregon Cattleman’s Association, acting as district vice president in 1993-94. He served on the Jackson County Budget Committee for six years, and as chairman for two years. He participated on many water policy boards and committees at the local and state levels, and was chairman of the Water Quality Advisory Committee of the Rogue Valley Council of Governments for many years.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Lawrence M. Jr., Ellicott City, Md., and Kent S., Renton, Wash.; a daughter, Cecille Cauble Newman, Knoxville, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Omar A. Bacon

The memorial service for Omar A. Bacon will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church, 220 W. Tulare Ave., Tulare, Calif. The Rev. Wim Meyer will officiate.

Mr. Bacon, 89, of Visalia, Calif., formerly of Medford, died Friday (Nov. 10, 2000) in Visalia.

Memorial contributions may be made to the College of the Sequoias Foundation, 915 S. Mooney Blvd., Visalia, CA 93277.

He was born March 30, 1911, in Ellsworth, Wis. He received a bachelor’s degree in education in 1936 from the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, Wis., a bachelor of science degree in 1939 from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn., and a master’s of library science in 1952 from the University of Illinois in Urbana, Ill.

On June 2, 1950, in Watertown, S.D., he married Margaret "Margo" Grow, who survives.

Mr. Bacon was the director of the Jackson County Library in Medford from 1959 to 1971. He was coordinator of the Mountain Valley library system in Sacramento, Calif., in 1971-72 and was on the staff of the Tulare County Library in 1972-73. He retired in 1973. He was also a librarian at Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, S.D., from 1939 to 1942 and 1946-47 and held librarian positions in Watertown, S.D., Huntington, W.Va., and Wenatchee, Wash.

During World War II, he served as a corporal in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a personnel classification technician and was stationed in Kearns, Utah, for the majority of his military service.

Mr. Bacon served as president of the Medford Rotary Club and as president of the Oregon Library Association. He served as chair on the Oregon Governor’s Advisory Committee on Aging. and was president of the Rogue Valley Council on Aging. He also served on the Oregon State Committee of National Endowment for the Humanities.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Medford.

Mr. Bacon enjoyed vegetable gardening, backpacking, camping and birding.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Robert D., Oakland, Calif.; a brother, J. Woodrow, River Falls, Wis.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Bacon Wilderson in September 2000
