James Vinton Roberts

The memorial service for James Vinton Roberts will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Pastor Christopher White of Trail Christian Fellowship in Eagle Point will officiate.

Mr. Roberts, 77, of Medford, died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Feb. 20, 1923, in Lafayette, Ind., a son of James Alva and Zella (Peugh) Roberts. On Dec. 8, 1945, in Hollywood, Calif., he married Thelma St. Germain, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1946 from Hollywood, Calif.

Mr. Roberts worked for John Paudois Trucking; in the woods for Ray Offord Logging; and retired from Boise Cascade.

He served in the U.S. Army, 410th Medical Collection Company, as a surgical technician during World War II.

Mr. Roberts enjoyed hunting and fishing, working in the yard and the outdoors.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, John, Medford, and Gary, Hornbrook, Calif.; two daughters, Vicky Gomes, Medford, and Julie Bostwick, Central Point, a brother, Dale, Paradise, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lou Roberts; and a grandson.

Friends may pay their respects from 1 to 2:30 Sunday at 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.

Gladys Adeline Gaines

The funeral for Gladys Adeline Gaines will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home, Marysville, Wash. Interment will be at Cypress Lawn Cemetery, Everett, Wash.

Mrs. Gaines, 93, of Grants Pass, died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000) at Three Rivers Community Hospital, Washington Campus.

She was born May 6, 1907, in Seattle. In 1948, in Seattle, she married William Gaines, who preceded her in death. She moved to Grants Pass from Coos Bay in 1960.

Mrs. Gaines was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Warren Bradt, Marysville, Wash., and Dean Bradt, Reno, Nev.; a daughter, Donna Mattison, Medford; two sisters, Bernice Jamison, Everett, Wash., and Ardis Wesson, Arlington, Wash; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Lundberg’s L. B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Walter Eugene Fadden

The memorial service for Walter Eugene Fadden will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Ashland Christian Fellowship. The Rev. Mark Anderson will officiate.

Mr. Fadden, 85, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at Linda Vista Care Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideon Memorial Bibles, P.O. Box 1811, Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Jan. 6, 1915, in St. Paul, Minn., the son of Walter Eugene and Ellen (Johnson) Fadden. He moved to California in 1920. On July 1, 1951, in Santa Monica, Calif., he married Elaine Krueger, who survives.

Mr. Fadden owned and operated a dispensing optician business in Santa Monica, Calif. He sold the business in 1980, and moved to Ashland in 1981.

He was a member of Ashland Christian Fellowship.

Mr. Fadden enjoyed golfing and working with stained glass, and was an extra with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for one season.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, David and Tim, Ashland, Patrick, Brookings, and Dennis, Stuart, Fla.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Marcelle M. Bernard

Marcelle M. Bernard, 92, of Ashland, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland. A private graveside service was held at Mountain View Cemetery, Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 98, Ashland, OR 97520, or to a favorite charity.

She was born Aug. 29, 1908, in Chicago, the daughter of Augusta and Anna Urkin. On Jan. 9, 1926, in Chicago, she married Arthur Bernard, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Bernard worked in the family business, Bernard Welding Equipment, in Chicago and Beecher, Ill. The Bernards moved to Ashland in 1979.

She was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader in Chicago, and belonged to the Beecher Women’s Welfare League.

Mrs. Bernard enjoyed gardening and crafts and was a member of the Ashland Garden Club.

Survivors include a son, Richard, Ashland; a daughter, Bonnie Wilkes, Chicago; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and a great-grandson.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

John Elmer Hummel

John Elmer Hummel, 70, of Eagle Point, died Sunday (Nov. 26, 2000) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

He was born Nov. 30, 1929, in Pittsburgh. On Dec. 9, 1989, in Reno, Nev., he married Thea Adams, who survives.

Mr. Hummel was a wildlife biologist for the state of California. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1997 from Truckee, Calif.

He was a past member of the Medford Gun Club.

Mr. Hummel enjoyed photography, hunting and shooting.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, J.T., Klamath Falls, and Steven, Diamond Springs, Calif.; a daughter, Autumn S. Hummel, Gold Hill, Calif.; his mother, Reneé Hummel, Canoga Park, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Dawn Adams, Eureka, Calif.; two stepsons, David Adams, Eureka, Calif., and St. Clair Adams, San Diego; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care.

J.E. Fair

The graveside service for J.E. Fair will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif.

Mr. Fair, 74, of White City, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at his home.

He was born June 6, 1926, in Lingleville, Texas, a son of James and Eula Fair. On Nov. 24, 1952, in Hanford, Calif., he married Betty Ruth Bell, who survives.

Mr. Fair worked at Sun Lumber Company in Wilmington, Calif. After moving to the Rogue Valley in 1967 from Bellflower, Calif., he worked for Bear Creek Corporation and Naumes Packing House for 11 years.

He was an animal collector.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two brothers, Carl, Bellflower, Calif., and Don, Corona, Calif.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Dennis G. Ochoa

The memorial service for Dennis G. Ochoa will be at 6 p.m. today at the Jacksonville Odd Fellows Lodge.

Mr. Ochoa, 56, of Talent, died Saturday (Nov. 25, 2000) at his home.

Among his survivors is a stepson, Matthew Corey-Ochoa, Ashland, and a stepdaughter, Sarah Corey-Ochoa, Ashland.

Marie Christine Gass

The graveside service for Marie Christine Gass will be at 3 p.m. today at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mrs. Gass, 85, of Medford, died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000) at a foster home.

She was born Marie Nelson on Dec. 29, 1914, in Nimskam, Canada. On Oct. 6, 1942, in Clifton, N. J., she married Robert Wayne Gass, who died in 1969. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1956 from Spokane, Wash.

Mrs. Gass was a homemaker. She and her husband were Watkins Products representatives in the Rogue Valley for many years.

She was a member of the Lutheran church.

Mrs. Gass enjoyed reading and playing pinochle with her pinochle groups.

Survivors include a niece, Marion Liming, San Jose, Calif. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.
