Mertie M. Jackson

The funeral for Mertie M. Jackson will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Perl Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Web Staunton of the Applegate Christian Fellowship will officiate. Interment will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Jackson, 48, of Medford, died Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bible Couriers Inc., 3317 Julliard Drive, Suite 125, Sacramento, CA 95826.

She was born Mertie Nelson on March 11, 1952, in Medford. She attended Willamette University. On Dec. 23, 1972, in Medford, she married Skeeter Jackson, who survives.

Mrs. Jackson was a homemaker.

She was a Cascade Community Pool board member. She had traveled in Eastern Europe with Open Doors and Brother Andrew, taking Bibles into Iron Curtain countries. She also worked with Bible Couriers International.

Mrs. Jackson enjoyed baking and making gingerbread houses, living on the family farm and hand-raising cattle, hand-painting decorative Christmas villages and going to Disneyland and Disney World.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include her parents, Charles and Loretta Nelson, Medford; and two sisters, Linda Rasmussen, Shady Cove, and Carolyn Alexander, Medford.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Helen M. Chance

Helen M. Chance, 81, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at her home. A private service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Foster Grandparents Program, 1700 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Feb. 17, 1919, in Superior, Neb. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1979 from Eureka, Calif.

Ms. Chance was a waitress at Ed’s Oasis in Eagle Point. She also worked with the Foster Grandparents Program at Glenn D. Hale School in Eagle Point.

She enjoyed playing pinochle and cooking.

Ned Clements Hall

Ned Clements Hall, 89, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

He was born Oct. 16, 1911, in Camargo, Ill., a son of Loren and Nellie Hall. On Oct. 12, 1940, in Highwood, Ill., he married Mary B. Schuster, who survives.

Mr. Hall was a custodian with Waukegan schools. He had also worked as a baker. He retired in 1974 after working for 55 years.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day.

Mr. Hall enjoyed trains, steam engines, reading and collecting match covers.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Barbara Garross, Zion, Ill.; a sister, Ruth Sparks, Medford; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Max E. Hall.

Iva Ellen Rains

The funeral for Iva Ellen Rains will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the West Main Church of Christ in Medford. The Rev. Stan Johnson will officiate. The graveside service will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Rains, 88, of Shady Cove, died Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

She was born July 1, 1912, in Paden, Okla., a daughter of Mose and Martha Martin. On Feb. 6, 1933, in Paden, she married Anderson Rains, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Rains was a homemaker and an avid gardener. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1962 from Richmond, Calif.

She was a member of the West Main Church of Christ for many years. Most recently she was a member of the Christian Church in Shady Cove.

Mrs. Rains enjoyed her family, her church and reading the Bible.

Survivors include three sons, Tom, Shady Cove, Glenn, Redding, Calif., and Bob, Fremont, Calif.; two daughters, Wilma Syres and Marguerite Barmore, both Shady Cove; a sister, Dorothy Bullard, Farmersville, Calif.; 34 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Carl Burgess; and her twin sister.

Jacob John Fritz

The memorial service for Jacob John Fritz will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass. Committal will be at Willamette National Cemetery at a later date.

Mr. Fritz, 85, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 9320 S.W. Barbur Blvd., Portland, OR 97502, or Dogs for the Deaf, 10175 Wheeler Road, Central Point, OR 97502.

He was born Aug. 2, 1915, in Walla Walla, Wash., a son of William and Susanna (Reider) Fritz. On April 11, 1945, he married Wilma Flitton, who survives.

Mr. Fritz enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941 and retired in 1962. He then worked as a carpenter in commercial construction for 24 years. He moved to Rogue River from Seattle in 1977, and to Medford in 1996.

He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and the Fleet Reserve Association, Seattle Branch 18. He was also a past member of Medford Elks Lodge No. 1168.

Mr. Fritz enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Marilyn Pace, Yakima, Wash.; two sisters, Elizabeth Ruff, Spearfish, S.D., and Leona Rupe, Glenwood, Iowa; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and a sister.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Pamela Grace Valdez

The memorial service for Pamela Grace Valdez will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Conger-Morris Chapel, Medford

Mrs. Valdez, 42, of Medford, died Friday (Dec. 1, 2000) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 26, 1958, in Roseburg, the daughter of Doldon and Betty Taylor. She was raised in Roseburg and moved to the Rogue Valley in 1984. On May 5, 1987, in Reno, Nev., she married Melecio Valdez, who survives.

Mrs. Valdez owned and operated Amberhills Foster Care in Central Point for five years.

Survivors include two daughters, Shannel and Cippy Valdez, both Central Point; a son, Joel, Central Point; and two brothers, Dwayne and Ron Taylor, both Roseburg.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Lawrence Martin

The memorial service for Lawrence Martin will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Jacksonville First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Lawrence Jung will officiate.

Mr. Martin, 86, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville Building Fund, P.O. Box 297, Jacksonville, OR 97530.

He was born Sept. 10, 1914, in Reno, Nev. On June 5, 1941, in Santa Barbara, Calif., he married June South, who survives.

Mr. Martin worked for Western Union in Reno. He also worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Santa Barbara until his retirement in 1972. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1974.

He served in the U.S. Army for 3½ years during World War II.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Williamson, Bothell, Wash., and Shirley Martin, Santa Barbara; a son, Larry, Santa Barbara; and a brother, Francis, Ridgecrest, Calif. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Marshall E. Miller

The memorial service for Marshall Evans Miller will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ascension Lutheran Church, Medford. The Rev. Robert L. Larson will officiate.

Mr. Miller, 86, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at Hearthstone nursing facility in Medford.

He was born Oct. 20, 1914, in East St. Louis, Ill. On Feb. 20, 1996, in Salinas, Calif., he married Lucille Trogstad, who survives.

Mr. Miller moved to the Rogue Valley two years ago from California.

Mr. Miller was a 1937 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law. From 1937 to 1941, he was law editor for Callaghan and Company, Chicago.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and in 1952, he was elected National Commander of American Veterans of World War II and Korea. He lived in Washington, D.C., during his term of office and traveled extensively around the country.

Mr. Miller moved to Sunnyvale, Calif., in 1953 and was admitted to the California Bar in 1954. He was a partner in the firm of Di Leonardo and Miller. In 1956, he was appointed executive director of the World Veterans Fund.

Mr. Miller was a member of the American Bar Association, the Illinois Bar Association, the California Bar Association, the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce, the Sunnyvale Lions Club, the Sunnyvale Democratic Council and the World Affairs Council of Northern California.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Jane Miller, Santa Cruz, Calif., and April Fehr, Frederick, Md.; a son, Jeffrey Miller, Alexandria, Va.; a stepson, Michael Abendshein, Caithensburg, Mass.; a brother, Clyde G. Miller, Mountain View, Calif.; a sister, Judith Keith, Forest Grove, Oregon; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
