Phyllis ‘Flossie’ Toso

Phyllis "Flossie" Florence Toso, 93, of Ashland, died Wednesday (Dec. 6, 2000) at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland. The memorial service will be held in the spring. Interment will be in Santa Cruz, Calif.

She was born Sept. 18, 1907, in Santa Maria, Calif., the daughter of Stefano and Elvira (Belluomini) DalPorto. She was raised and graduated from high school in Santa Cruz, Calif. In 1935, in San Francisco, she married John A. Toso, who died in 1975.

Mrs. Toso was a homemaker, known for her apple pies. She also served with the Senior Companion Program in Oakland, Calif., for many years.

A longtime resident of and shopper in the San Francisco Bay area, she moved to Ashland in 1992.

Survivors include a son, John P., Ashland; a brother, James DalPorto, Santa Cruz; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Vernon ‘Vern’ E. White

The inurnment service with full military honors for Vernon "Vern" Edwin White will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trent Church of Christ in Dexter.

Mr. White, 77, of Creswell, formerly of the Rogue Valley, died Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2000) at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene.

He was born May 11, 1923, in Vernonia, a son of Ada May (Davis) and William C. White, and the youngest of nine children. On Dec. 31, 1944, in Medford, he married Janet Turpin, who survives.

Mr. White was a plumbing contractor in Oregon, California and Hawaii for more than 30 years. He lived in the Rogue Valley for most of his life, and in Sunnyvale, Calif., from 1954-1984.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific.

Mr. White enjoyed his family and helping others. He was known for his colorful stories and sense of humor.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Thomas and Daniel, both Pleasant Hill, and Stevan, Magnolia, Wash.; a brother, Jack, Medford; a sister, Jeannette Dayton, Medford; and 10 grandchildren.

Arrangements: Musgrove Funeral Home, Eugene.

Lawrence Monroe Moody

The funeral for Lawrence Monroe Moody will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Medford Neighborhood Church. Pastor Lee Gregory will officiate. The graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Moody, 83, of Central Point, died Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2000) at a local foster care home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Medford Neighborhood Church Missions Fund, 1819 W. Stewart Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born May 25, 1917, in Scotts Bluff, Neb. On Dec. 11, 1938, in Lyman, Neb., he married Lydia Geisel, who survives. He moved to Portland in 1942 from Nebraska, and to the Rogue Valley in 1961.

Mr. Moody owned and operated Cascade Barber Shop in White City from 1963 until his retirement in 1982.

During World War II, he served in the 517th parachute combat team and was a cannoneer in the 460th parachute artillery. The Artillery Journal reported that the unit’s performance was the best in Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Mr. Moody was one of the original members of the Medford Neighborhood Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, David, Medford; two daughters, Brenda Geiger and Cynthia Hamasu, both Medford; three brothers, Earl, Salem, Paul, Denver, and Jack, Los Angeles; two sisters, Lou Allison, Hemet, Calif., and Mary Lane, Denver; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Emmett.

Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

Lillian Margaret Orr

The funeral for Lillian Margaret Orr will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Chapel. The graveside service will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Orr, 79, of Central Point, died Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2000) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 10, 1921, in Winston, a daughter of Israel and Meta Thompson. On Aug. 25, 1953, in Roseburg, she married Ike V. Orr, who survives.

Mrs. Orr was the bookkeeper for the businesses the Orrs owned and operated, Bay Area Horse Transportation and Ike Orr Racing Stables in the San Francisco Bay area. She moved to Medford in the 1950s, then to the Bay area, and back to the Rogue Valley in 1988 from San Mateo, Calif.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing and betting on horses.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Tom Laurance, Las Vegas, and Craig Laurance, San Ramon, Calif.; a daughter, Joanie Orr, Central Point; two stepsons, David Orr, Central Point, and Dick Orr, Grants Pass; a brother, Irv Thompson, Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Mabel Katzmarek, Roseburg; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

Verna Marlys Elias

Verna Marlys Elias, 73, of Eagle Point, died Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at her home. The memorial service was held Wednesday at Sierra Grace Church in Auburn, Calif. Interment will be at Auburn Cemetery in Auburn, Calif.

She was born March 19, 1927, in Belle Plaine, Minn. On Oct. 1, 1955, in Portland, she married Andrew Elias, who survives.

Mrs. Elias was a musician. She taught music in Los Altos, Calif. from 1950-1970. She moved to the Rogue Valley two months ago from Colfax, Calif.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Joan Pfaff, Wichita, Kan.; two sons, Todd, Lake Oswego, and Don, Auburn, Calif.; a sister, Harriet Chamberlain, Eagle Point; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Mary Ruth Throne

The graveside service for Mary Ruth Throne will be at 11 p.m. Friday at Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland.

Mrs. Throne, 84, of Ashland, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at Linda Vista Care Center.

She was born Sept. 2, 1916, in Cedarville, Calif., a daughter of George Josiah and Mary Etta (Johnson) Wentzell. She grew up in Paisley in Lake County, where she, her mother and her oldest sister ran the Chewaucan Hotel until it burned. She was a waitress at the Lakeview Hotel, where she met Al Throne. They moved to Ashland after their marriage.

The Thrones put together elaborate outdoor lighting displays each Christmas at their Ashland Home and won many prizes for best outdoor light contest.

Mrs. Throne was known for her Christmastime peanut brittle. She retired in 1995 and lived in different care facilities until her death.

Survivors include four nieces, Dorothy Kober, Redding, Calif., Marie Valaoritis, Oakland, Calif., Evelyn Carey, Paisley, and Barbara Wentzel, Sunnyvale, Calif.; a nephew, Harry Wilson, Winnemucca, Nev.; and several great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Al, in 1974.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

George Arthur Strock Jr.

George Arthur Strock Jr., 63, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at his home. Private inurnment will be in Oakdale Memorial Park, Medford.

He was born April 28, 1937, in Los Angeles.

Mr. Strock was a truck driver. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1995 from California.

He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne.

Survivors include two daughters, Tracey Hambro, Santa Margarita, Calif., and Kimberly Lindsey, Grass Valley, Calif.; a son, Dwayne; and his mother, Rosemarie Ellis, Medford.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Mickey Aitken-Hendrickson

The funeral for Mickey Aitken-Hendrickson will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Central Point Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bishop Burnett will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Aitken-Hendrickson, 92, of Central Point, died Nov. 22, 2000, at Providence Medford Medical Center..

She was born Jan. 29, 1908, in Midvale, Idaho. In 1986, in Portland, she married Leland Hendrickson, who died in 1995. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1992 from Lincoln City.

Mrs. Aitken-Hendrickson was a journalist for the Record Searchlight in Redding, Calif., a writer for GAF-View Master, and worked for the Oregonian in Portland.

During World War II, she was a welder at Kaiser Shipyard in Portland.

Mrs. Aitken-Hendrickson was the director of the Cerebral Palsy Association in Portland for many years.

She attended the Baptist Church.

Mrs. Aitken-Hendrickson enjoyed writing, sewing, gardening and dancing.

Survivors include a son, Douglas Asa Smith, Central Point; two sisters, Mary Stephens, Midvale, Idaho, and Minerva Nygaard, Orofino, Idaho; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Douglas R. Smith; her second husband, William Aitken; her third husband, Leland Hendrickson; six brothers; and two sisters.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 :30 p.m. Friday at the Central Point LDS Church.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.
