Miriam Mae Tavis
Miriam Mae Tavis, 87, of Eagle Point, died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2001) at her home. The memorial service has been held. Inurnment will be with her late husband in Duarte, Calif., at a later date.
She was born May 1, 1913, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, a daughter of William and Alice Keiffer. In September 1930, she married Melvin Joseph Tavis, who died in 1971.
Mrs. Tavis was an assistant buyer of ready-to-wear women’s clothing with Henshaw’s Department Store in Arcadia, Calif. She moved to Ashland in the mid-1980s from Arcadia, Calif.
Survivors include a son, Craig, Chico, Calif.; a daughter, Linda Sturgeon, Phoenix; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Leo Don Lowe
The memorial service for Leo Don Lowe will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland. Central Point Masonic Lodge. No. 135 will officiate. Inurnment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
Mr. Lowe, 103, of Ashland, died Dec. 29, 2000, at Hearthstone.
He was born Oct. 30, 1897, in Hopland, Calif., a son of D.M. and Mattie Lowe. He moved to Ashland by wagon in 1909 over the Siskiyou toll road. He attended Ashland High School. On Feb. 10, 1921, in Seattle, he married Jacqueline Grace White who died in 1993. They were married for 72 years.
Mr. Lowe was an electrical lineman for the city of Ashland from 1945 until his retirement in 1962. Prior to World War II, he worked in logging, millwork and ranching.
He was the last surviving member of the First Company Oregon Coast Artillery of the National Guard that served in World War I as part of the Army Heavy Artillery, 165th Battalion (1917-1919). During World War II, he served in the South Pacific with the Seabees, surviving Okinawa, Iwo Jima and Saipan.
Mr. Lowe was a 67-year member of the Ashland Elks, a Master Mason at Sisson White Pine Lodge No. 310 in Mount Shasta, Calif., a member of the Square and Compass Club organized in 1945 on Saipan, and a National Life Member of the Veterans of World War I of the USA.
Survivors include two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacquelynne Donne Bennett, in 1981; three brothers, Lucien, George and Jewell; and a sister, Hazel.

Samuel Dale Scofield II
Samuel Dale Scofield II, 56, of Medford, died Wednesday (Jan. 3, 2001) at his home. No service is planned.

He was born April 1, 1944, in Bakersfield, Calif., a son of Samuel and Geraldine Scofield. On June 18, 1971, in Reno, Nev., he married Sandee Borjas, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1973 from Grants Pass.
Mr. Scofield worked for Boise Cascade for 18 years.
He was a member of the Southern Oregon Contemporary Auto Club, was on the board of directors of the Rogue Valley Bowling Association, and was a volunteer at ACCESS, Inc.
Mr. Scofield enjoyed classic cars and bowling.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Cheri Lea, Phoenix; a stepson, Al Boyle, Enterprise; his mother, Geraldine Thomas, Grants Pass; his stepmother, Elayne Scofield, Sacramento, Calif.; two brothers, Jim Sulewski, Tacoma, Wash., and Dennis Scofield, Medford; two sisters, Manya Beatty, Phoenix, and Lisa Webber, Vacaville, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Bert J. Marshall
The funeral for Bert J. Marshall will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Chapel in Medford. The committal service will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.
Mr. Marshall, 78, of Medford, died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001) in Medford.

He was born Oct. 21, 1922, in Rankin, Okla. On Sept. 21, 1945, in Los Angeles, he married Mary E. Torbett, who died in 1996. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1945 from Los Angeles.
Mr. Marshall worked for Timber Products in White City from 1960-1980, when he retired.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mr. Marshall was a member of Calvary Temple in Central Point.
He enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Survivors include two sons, Daymon L., Pueblo, Colo., and Fredie J., Los Alamos, N.M.; a daughter, Sherry E. Denn, White City; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hillcrest Chapel, Medford.

Lynne Ryder Moke
The memorial service for Lynne Ryder Moke will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Medford. The Rev. Alan Jackson will officiate.
Mrs. Moke, 51, of Sunriver, formerly of Medford, died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2001) in Medford.
She was born Feb. 2, 1949, in Endicott, N.Y., the daughter of Stephen W. And Mary K. Ryder. On Aug. 21, 1981, in Anchorage, Alaska, she married Richard F. Moke, who survives.
She was a member of the class of 1971 at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., and attended the Ansel Adams Institute for Photography in Monterey, Calif.
Before her marriage, she was a staff photographer for the Mail Tribune from 1977 to 1981. In June 1979, her Mail Tribune photograph of the Bicentennial Applegate Wagon Train crossing Interstate 5 near Ashland was reproduced in newspapers across the nation.
Mrs. Moke and her husband moved to Palm Springs, Calif., in 1984, where she worked as a photographer and assistant to the society editor at the Desert Sun, covering most of the benefit performances and celebrity events in that community for several years.
She was a member of the National Press Photographers Association. In Palm Springs, she was active with the Palm Springs Youth Center and with the Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Amanda Lynne Moke, Sunriver; and her parents, Stephen W. and Mary K. Ryder, Medford.

George R. Aguiar
The funeral Mass for George R. Aguiar will be at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford.
Mr. Aguiar, 88, of Medford, died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001) in Medford.

He was born in the Kapaa Laipo Valley on Kauai, Hawaii. His parents were homesteaders who came to Hawaii to work on the sugar plantations in exchange for land.
He married Alice Cabral, who survives.
Mr. Aguiar was a magistrate and a house representative in the Territorial Legislature in the late 1930s. He retired and moved to Ashland in 1978 to sell real estate and be close to family. He and his wife moved to Medford in 1990.
On the island of Kauai, he was called the "Great Storyteller, " and was known for his stories about the old Hawaii before statehood and the influx of tourism. He stories are preserved in his book, "Maikai Nou Kauai, " edited and published by his son-in-law, Larry Wright.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Alice, Medford; two daughters, Ann Wright, Medford, and Kathryn Aiona-Aka, Honolulu; a son, Gordon, Klamath Falls; a sister, Jeannette Melton, San Diego; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, George "Tony" Aguiar; and 16 brothers and sisters.

Eric Christopher Cornelison
The funeral for Eric Christopher Cornelison will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Rogue Valley Community Church in Rogue River. Pastor Jeff Freshour will officiate. Interment will be in Woodville Cemetery, Rogue River.
Eric, infant son of Charles and M’Kenzie Cornelison of Rogue River, died Dec. 20, 2000, at SASEBO Naval Station in SASEBO, Japan.
He was born Dec. 19, 2000, at SASEBO Naval Station in Japan.
Survivors include his parents, Charles Keith and M’Kenzie Cornelison, Rogue River; and his grandparents, Charles William Cornelison, Williams, Susan Gorman, Beatty, Nev., and Scott and Deborah Basson, Las Vegas.
