Paul C. Lemon
Paul C. Lemon, 88, of Ashland, died Monday (March 12, 2001) at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland. No service is planned.

He was born in 1912 in Bethany, Neb. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota, a master’s degree from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.
Mr. Lemon began his career as a forester for the U.S. Forest Service. Most of his professional career was spent at the State University of New York, Albany, where he was a professor of biology and ecology, and was the chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences for 10 years. He also served as a Fulbright researcher in Malawi Africa, as a Fulbright professor in the Philippines, and as a UNESCO professor in Ghana, Africa. In Oregon, he was adjunct professor at Southern Oregon University.
He was a pioneer in ecology and prescribed forest burning. His "Field and Laboratory Guide for Ecology" was widely used. His areas of special interest were management of mountain range land, zebra and the larger antelopes, fire-grazing interactions and prairie grasses.
Mr. Lemon was a member of the Native Plant Society, the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the American Ecological Society and many environmental organizations. He was active in Democratic politics and was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Association of the Rogue Valley.
He traveled widely throughout the world.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia, Ashland; a son, Gary, Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters, Laurel Springborn, Loudonville, N.Y., and Susan Richardson, Napa, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Richard ‘Dick’ G. Ekola
Richard "Dick" G. Ekola, 62, of Roseburg, formerly of Medford, died March 8, 2001, at his home. No service is planned.
He was born May 26, 1938, in San Francisco, a son of Walter E. and Mabel L. (Jensen) Ekola.
Mr. Ekola worked for Valley Office Equipment in Medford for 21 years. He moved to Roseburg in 1995, where he worked for Roen’s Office Supply for five years.
He served in the U.S. Navy with the submarine service.
Mr. Ekola enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy, Roseburg; a son, Steven Williams, San Diego; a stepson, Michael Brown, Medford; stepdaughter, Kim Brown, Ashland; a brother, Lee, Irvine, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Kenneth C. Winkfield
Kenneth Clifford Winkfield, 88, of Phoenix, died Monday (March 12, 2001) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. No service is planned. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford.
He was born Jan. 7, 1913, in Paradox, Colo. On Oct. 2, 1971, in Carson City, Nev., he married Georgianna Richardson, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley 40 years ago from St. Helens.
Mr. Winkfield owned and operated a hardware store in Grants Pass in the 1950s. He later managed Rodda Paint Company for more than 20 years during the 1960s and 70s.
He was an inventor and enjoyed fishing, playing pool and woodworking.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two stepsons, Roger Richardson, Eagle Point, and Gerald Richardson, Ferndale, Calif.; a brother, Ellsworth, Phoenix; eight stepgrandchildren; and numerous stepgreat-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Forrest, Wayne and Leslie; a sister, Gladys Stockhoff; and one stepdaughter, Lois Marilyn Bond.

Lester Henry Gilman
The funeral service for Lester Henry Gilman, 88, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Chapel. The graveside service will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The Rev. John Braund will officiate.
Mr. Gilman, 88 of Central Point, died Tuesday (March 13, 2001) at his home.

He was born June 5, 1912, in Medford, a son of George and Martha (Schultz) Gilman, who moved here in the early 1900s. He lived in the Rogue Valley all his life. He married Leila Van der Mark. They later divorced. In 1961, in Reno, Nev., he married Norma Henderson, who survives.
Mr. Gilman took over the management of Gilman Dairy in 1949.
He was a member of the Eastwood Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 135, Scottish Rite, York Rite, Hillah Temple, and Shriner Central Point Lodge. He was also past president of the Medford Rose Society and a charter member of the Central Point Lions Club.
Mr. Gilman was a master gardener. He enjoyed rock collecting, landscaping and rockeries.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, George L. Gilman, Medford, Richard L. Gilman, Central Point, John L. Henderson, Kapdei, Hawaii, and Larry T. Henderson, Medford; two daughters, Susan E. Lind, Carmel Valley, Calif., and Donna J. Freeman, Ashland; two sisters, Leona Blackmarr, Medford, and Laura Gorman, Redding, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lew; and two sisters, Larraine France and Elizabeth Chaussee.
Friends may pay their respects from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Chapel, Medford.

Virginia Ruth Nielsen
The memorial service for Virginia Ruth Nielsen will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Medford. The Rev. Alan Jackson will officiate.
Mrs. Nielsen, 79, of Medford, died Tuesday (March 13, 2001) at her home.

She was born Virginia Armstrong on Feb. 12, 1922, in Oakland, Calif. On Nov. 28, 1943, in Oakland, Calif., she married Roger Nielsen, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1993 from Layfayette, Calif.
Mrs. Nielsen was a homemaker.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Nielsen enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Kathy Rothway, Walnut Creek, Calif., Leslie Katz, Martinez, Calif., and Peggy Woods, Lake Forest, Calif.; a son, Brian, Danville, Ill. and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister; and a brother.

Roy L. Thompson
Roy L. Thompson, 75, of White City, died Wednesday (March 14, 2001) at his home. The memorial service will be held later. Inurnment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

He was born Jan. 14, 1926, in Burbank, Calif., the son of Henry and Cora Thompson. On June 15, 1969, in Reno, Nev., he married Lucille Williams, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1952 from Burbank, Calif.
Mr. Thompson was a policeman with the Medford Police Department for 25 years, retiring in 1978.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Thompson was a member of the Elks and Moose Lodges.
He and his wife enjoyed spending the winter at their home in Yuma, Ariz. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and motorcycle touring.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Gary, Wenatchee, Wash., and David, Reno, Nev.; two stepsons, Gregory Taylor, White City, and Jack Cornutt, Austin, Texas; a daughter, Jeanne Peterson, Central Point; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Thomas Evan Davis
The graveside service for Thomas Evan Davis will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Jacksonville Cemetery. Pastor Don Farnsworth of Southwest Nazarene of Medford will officiate.
Mr. Davis, 95, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday (March 13, 2001) at his home.

He was born April 29, 1905, in Mount Calm, Texas. On Feb. 18, 1939, in Reno, Nev., he married Zola Hemstreet, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1980 from Avila Beach, Calif.
Mr. Davis was a commercial fisherman for 50 years and owned and operated Davis Seafood Wholesale and Retail Co. and Davis Refrigeration Service.
He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.
Mr. Davis enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and traveling.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Thomas W., Bandon, Evan J., Coos Bay, and John L., Porterville, Calif.; a daughter, Marsha Ostrom, Nevada City, Calif.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
