Bruce Reed Stewart
Bruce Reed Stewart, 82, died Thursday (March 29, 2001) at his home in Ashland. At his request, no services are planned.

Mr. Stewart was born April 10, 1918, in Stamford, Texas, to David Henry Stewart and Blanche Ellis. On Dec. 27, 1941, in Wichita, Kan., he married May Louise Michener, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in March 1983.
Mr. Stewart earned master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Kansas at Lawrence. He retired in 1982 as a professor at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich.
He enjoyed mountain climbing, jogging, birding and wildflowers.
He was a member for 10 years of the Rogue Valley Ethics Committee of Rogue Valley Medical Center and was an adjunct professor at Southern Oregon University in Ashland.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, John A., Bolton, Conn., Harold Bruce, Tigard, and Dion C., Alamosa, Colo.; two daughters, Joy L. Stewart, Madison, Wisc., and Diana J. Whitlock, Ashland; a sister, Blanche Ellis Knoll, Brainerd, Minn.; and eight grandchildren.

Esther May Dalton
A graveside service is planned for Esther May Dalton at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville. The Rev. Earle Best, a retired minister, will officiate. A potluck will follow at the Oddfellows Lodge in Jacksonville.
Mrs. Dalton, 83, of Medford, died Saturday (March 31, 2001) at a local foster home.

Mrs. Dalton was born March 28, 1918, in Medford to Henry and Elonear (Crowder) Mankins. On June 10, 1936, in Jacksonville, she married Paul Clifford Dalton, who preceded her in death.
She had lived in Jacksonville all of her life. She graduated in 1936 from Jacksonville High School as valedictorian of her class. She enjoyed charity work, cooking, reading and elk hunting.
Survivors include six sons, Earle, Cliff and Linn, all Jacksonville, Clyde, Medford, Henry, Yoncalla, and Calvin, Centralia, Wash.; a daughter, Coralee Thomas, Nenana, Alaska; 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, a grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Chase Warren
Robert Chase Warren, 84, of Medford, died Friday (March 30, 2001) at Rogue Valley Manor Health Center.
Arrangements will be announced by Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.
Merrill Hanson
The memorial service for Merrill Hansen will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at The Waterford at Three Fountains, 760 Spring St., Medford.
Mr. Hansen, 88, of Medford, died Wednesday (March 14, 2001) in Medford.

He was born Oct. 31, 1912, in Ashton, Idaho, the son of Hans Peter and Karen (Olsen) Hansen. The family moved to Van Nuys, Calif., where he attended high school. He studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he received the equivalent of a master’s degree. On June 17, 1944, he married Irene Francis, who died in Medford in 1998.
Mr. Hansen was an assistant professor, teaching auto body repair skills at Long Beach City College in California.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1941, and spent three years in England as a camera technician at Depford Air Base.
Mr. Hansen was a longtime member of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Jacksonville, where he donated and dedicated a new organ in his wife’s name following her death.
He enjoyed photography, lapidary, traveling and repairing automobiles.
Mr. Hansen was preceded in death by a son, Roger.

Irving Lord
Recitation of the Rosary for Irving Lord is planned for 9 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, with a funeral Mass to follow. The Rev. Gerald A. Buckley, O.P., will officiate. Interment will follow.
Mr. Lord, 75, of Ashland, died Saturday (March 17, 2001) at the Ashland Community Hospital.

Mr. Lord lived in the Rogue Valley since 1960. He received a master’s degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and his doctorate from University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Lord retired as an English professor in 1977 from Southern Oregon University in Ashland.
Mr. Lord served in the Army during World War II.
He enjoyed gardening, genealogy and membership in the Sierra Club.
Survivors include a son, Alfred B. Lord; two daughters, Tracy M. Lord, Alcyon L. Archambault; a sister, Jayne Wilson; and two grandchildren.

Edith Margaret Lungren
The memorial service for Edith Margaret Lungren will be held Saturday, March 24, in Kingsburg, Calif. The Rev. Ronald Lagerstrom of Davis, Calif., will officiate. Inurnment will be at the Kingsburg District Cemetery in Kingsburg, Calif.
Mrs. Lungren, 85, of Central Point, died Wednesday (March 14, 2001) at her home.

She was born March 3, 1916, in Corbin, Kan., a daughter of Everett and Myrtle Evans. On Nov. 2, 1936, in Corbin, she married Arlow Lungren, who died in 1978.
Mrs. Lungren was a teacher. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1982 from Kingsburg, Calif.
She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Kingsburg, Calif.
Mrs. Lungren enjoyed reading, quilting, sewing and entertaining.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Bruland, Medford, and Millie Lungren, Chicago; a sister, Lucille Charles, Wichita, Kan.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Beryl and Ernest Evans.

Mary Sands
The memorial service for Mary Sands will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Central Point. The Rev. Wanda Shannon will officiate.
Mrs. Sands, 92, of Central Point, died Thursday (March 15, 2001) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

She was born Aug. 17, 1908, in Papa, Hungary, the daughter of Steven and Mari (Biro) Szalai. She was educated in Hungary and Cleveland, Ohio. In 1933, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, she married Earl Lawrence Sands, who died in 1958. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1950 from Saskatchewan, Canada.
Mrs. Sands was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Central Point Garden Club and the Central Point Presbyterian Church, and was Toastmistress of Medford.
Mrs. Sands was an avid reader and faithful volunteer at the Central Point Library. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting.
Survivors include two sons, Larry, Medford, and Robert S., Dundee; a daughter, Janet Caughie, Idaho Falls, Idaho; a brother, Arthur J. Szalai, Chemainus, British Columbia; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Steven and Joe Szalai.

Ellen H. Wallace
The memorial service for Ellen H. Wallace will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at Ashland Unitarian Church.
Mrs. Wallace, 88, of Ashland, died Tuesday (March 13, 2001) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 1, 1912, in Portland, a daughter of Ray and Bess (Elkins) Abbott. She completed the librarian course at the University of Alaska. On March 5, 1953, in Vancouver, Wash., she married James Wallace, who survives.
Mrs. Wallace was a librarian with the public schools in Fairbanks, Alaska. She retired in 1975.
She was a volunteer with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship of Rogue Valley in Ashland. She was active in the National Organization of Women (NOW) and was involved in the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) marches in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She was also involved with ICCA Ashland, a group that deals with the homeless, and with Community Works’ Crisis Intervention programs.
Mrs. Wallace enjoyed books, theater, dining out and political activism.
Survivors include a son, John Sims, Quinault, Wash.; a daughter, Emily Caliendo, Boynton Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna McCleary and Jean Miettunen; and a brother, John "Jack" Abbott.
