Sam Newman

The funeral service for Sam Newman will be at 10 a.m. today at the Medford Neighborhood Church. The Rev. V. Lee Gregory will officiate. Interment will be in Etna Cemetery in Etna, Calif.

Mr. Newman, 62, of Medford, died Friday (April 6, 2001) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 380 S.E. Spokane, Suite No. 110, Portland, OR 97202.

He was born Jan. 18, 1939, in Hilt, Calif., a son of W.H. and Edna Newman. On July 1, 1961, in Reno, Nev., he married Verna Rose Branson, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1968 from Seiad Valley, Calif.

Mr. Newman worked as a saw filer for Cal Ore Carbide and most recently as a forklift driver for Southern Oregon Sales in Medford.

He served in the National Guard for four years.

Mr. Newman was a member of the Medford Neighborhood Church.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting and playing cards.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Vickie Anders, Rogue River, and Sandra Davis and Christene Carter, Medford; a son, Ronald E., Medford; a brother, Ray, Portland; a sister, Jessie Wiman, Sacramento, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Smith and Geraldine Harris; and a brother, W.H. Newman Jr.

Shirley Jean Bunker

Shirley Jean Bunker, 72, of Shady Cove, died Friday (April 6, 2001) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A private service was held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 698, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born June 2, 1928, in San Diego. On Sept. 16, 1983, in San Diego, she married William Charles Bunker, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1993 from San Diego.

Mrs. Bunker was an accountant for the University of California.

She was a member of the women’s auxiliary of the American Disabled Veterans. She was also a lady of the Shrine Club and a member of the Good Sam Club, the Harley-Davidson Owners Group of Phoenix and international and the boosters of Shady Cove.

She enjoyed gardening, motorcycle tour biking, competitive swimming and traveling.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three sons, Steve Mehas, Sarasota, Fla., William C. Bunker Jr. and Robert Bunker, both Kerrville, Texas; three daughters, Vickie Wilson and Becky Mehas, both San Diego, and Cindy Bowers, San Ramon, Calif.; a brother, Wally Bales, San Diego; and 16 grandchildren.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

JoAnna Elizabeth Singh

The Mass of Christian Burial for JoAnna Elizabeth Singh will be at 5 p.m. today at St. Anne Catholic Church in Grants Pass. The Rev. John Cihak will officiate.

JoAnna, 16, of Grants Pass, died Friday (April 6, 2001) in a car accident in Grants Pass.

She was born Feb. 23, 1985, in Anaheim, Calif., a daughter of Jodhan and Patti Singh. She moved to Grants Pass in October 1999 from Nashville, Tenn.

Joanna was a student a North Valley High School.

Known as an easygoing and happy-go-lucky person, she enjoyed people.

Survivors include her father, Jodhan Singh, Nashville, Tenn.; her mother, Patti Trujillo, Grants Pass; and a sister, Amanda Singh, Nashville, Tenn.

Arrangements: Lundberg’s L.B. Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Elva Johanna Barbeau

The funeral service for Elva Johanna Barbeau will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ashland Ward. Interment will be at Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford.

Visitation will be prior to the service at noon.

Mrs. Barbeau, 91, of Talent, died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at Ashland Community Hospital.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Missionary Fund, c/o LDS Church, Ashland Ward, 1022 Clay St., Ashland, OR 97520, or the American Red Cross, 60 Hawthorne St., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Elva Rickenbach on Nov. 5, 1909, in Mammoth, Utah. She married Fred R. Barbeau, who died in 1963. She moved to the Rogue Valley in the mid-1980s.

Mrs. Barbeau was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ashland Ward.

She enjoyed shopping, traveling and going on cruises.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Clover, Oakland, Calif.; a sister, Fern Nerton, Talent, and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Rickenbach.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Joe Edward Brooks

Joe Edward Brooks, 73, of Grants Pass, died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at his home. No service is planned.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Brooks, Grants Pass; a son, Gary, Elida, Ohio; a daughter, Laurie Brooks, Grants Pass; a brother, Tom, Grants Pass; a sister, Ila Crook, Grants Pass; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements; Grants Pass Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Forrest Griffith Harris Jr.

The memorial service for Forrest Griffith Harris Jr. will be at noon Tuesday at Eastwood Baptist Church in Medford. The Rev. George A. Nye will officiate. A private graveside service will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Harris, 77, of Central Point, died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born June 5, 1923, in St. Louis, the son of Forrest and Effie (Ealey) Harris Sr. He married Veronica E. "Edie" Luz, who survives.

Mr. Harris was a dairyman and almond grower in Modesto, Calif. He moved to the Rogue Valley 10 years ago from Brookings, where he had lived for 20 years.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the submarine service.

Mr. Harris was a member of the American Legion, the Men’s Bowling Association and Eastwood Baptist Church.

He enjoyed fishing, bowling and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Gregory G., Medford; two stepsons, Kenneth R. and Paul A. Black, both Redding, Calif.; a daughter, Cindy Thomas, Brookings; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.

Claudia Jean Enevoldsen

The memorial service for Claudia Jean Enevoldsen will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Cowlitz Kingdom Hall in Longview, Wash.

Mrs. Enevoldsen, 67, of Medford, died March 30, 2001, at Three Fountains Nursing Center.

She was born March 22, 1934, in Longview, the daughter of Al and Pearl Catlin. On June 30, 1950, she married Stanley Enevoldsen, who died in 1994. She moved to the Rogue Valley 4˝ years ago from Castle Rock, Wash.

Mrs. Enevoldsen was a homemaker and a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She enjoyed taking friends to lunch and reading.

Survivors include a daughter, Faith Davidson, Medford; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.
