John MacMillan Gates
The memorial service for John MacMillan Gates will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jacksonville Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Gates, 84, of Central Point, died Tuesday (April 24, 2001) at his home, of an aneurysm.

He was born March 21, 1917, in Portland. His family was prominent in the early development of Portland and his grandfather served as mayor. He attended Grant High School in Portland and graduated from Oregon State University in 1941, where he was affiliated with Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. In 1941, he married Shirley Hovind, who survives. They moved to Medford in 1954.
Mr. Gates was a sales engineer for Armco Steel for 33 years.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, supervising ship building in the San Francisco shipyards. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, when he supervised ship repairs at the San Diego Naval Station. He later joined the U.S. Naval Reserve where he served as commanding officer of the unit in Grants Pass, and later as the officer in command at the Medford unit. He retired as a commander.
Mr. Gates was a member of the Southern Oregon Timber Association and the Retired Professional Engineers of Oregon. He was a longtime member and elder of Jacksonville Presbyterian Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Becky Jones, Rapid City, S.D.; two sons, John, Redmond, Wash., and Steve, Lake Oswego; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Tommy, who died shortly after birth.

H.J. 'Johnny' Hinderer Jr.
A celebration of the life of H.J. "Johnny" Hinderer Jr. will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel.
Mr. Hinderer, 67, of Central Point, died Tuesday (April 24, 2001) at his home.

He was born July 29, 1933, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Medford. He attended schools in Medford, Jacksonville and Central Point, graduating from Central Point High School in 1952. On Dec. 28, 1952, he married Gloria A. Walker, who survives. He graduated from Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls in 1959.
Mr. Hinderer was a diesel mechanic with Haupert Tractor Company for 15 years. He then worked as shop foremen for Pacific Motor Trucking until they closed their Medford facility. At that time, he started his own business, All Hours Truck and Equipment Repair, which he operated until his retirement in 1987.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, stationed at Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Mr. Hinderer was a member of the Southern Oregon Historical Society, Southern Oregon Antiques and Collectibles and the Machinists' Union.
In addition to spending time with his children and grandchildren, he enjoyed golfing, antiquing and outdoor activities.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Karen and Judith; a son, Randy; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Roland C. Keffer
The memorial service for Roland C. Keffer will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at The Orchards, 1018 Royal Court, Medford.
Mr. Keffer, 87, of Medford, died April 16, 2001, at his home.

Timothy Ross Delzell
The memorial service for Timothy Ross Delzell will be at 2 p.m. Friday at his sister’s home, 767 Grandview, Grants Pass.
Mr. Delzell, 37, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (April 7, 2001) at Three Rivers Community Hospital, Dimmick Campus, Grants Pass.

He was born March 11, 1964, in Grants Pass. He graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1982.
Mr. Delzell was a computer graphics operator with Intel Corporation in Beaverton for several years. He worked for Fainco On-line Auction Services after moving back to Grants Pass.
He enjoyed scuba diving, model building, playing the guitar and spending time with his daughter.
Survivors include his daughter, Janae Lee Delzell, Grants Pass; a stepson, Sam Smith, Portland; his mother, Mary Jane Delzell, Grants Pass; a sister, Marla Hodges, Grants Pass; two brothers, Marlin Jr., Wilderville, and Lonnie, Grants Pass. He was preceded in death by his father, Marlin Sr.; and two brothers, Barry and Joel.

Genevieve D. Kemzura
Genevieve Dorothy Kemzura, 87, of Grants Pass, died April 1, 2001, at her home. The funeral service was held in Ontario, Calif., with interment at Bellevue Mausoleum in Ontario, Calif.
She was born May 15, 1913, in Chicago. On Dec. 5, 1978, in Las Vegas, she married Vetautas Kemzura, who survives. They moved to Grants Pass from Silverton in 1996.
Mrs. Kemzura worked as a seamstress for Pacific State Hospital in Pomona, Calif.
She was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church.
Mrs. Kemzura enjoyed sewing.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a daughter, Patricia Gillen, Silverton; two sons, William Edwards, Merlin, and James Edwards, Hesperia, Calif.; three sisters, Francis Furmanski and Florence Kisaleski, both Chicago, and Shirley Iwanski, Upland, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Edwards; and a daughter, Judith Edwards.

Ethel Irene Hull
The memorial service for Ethel Irene Hull will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Conger-Morris Chapel in Medford. Inurnment will be in Central Point Masonic Cemetery. Paul Mather of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses will officiate.
Ms. Hull, 92, formerly of Medford, died March 28, 2001, in San Diego.
She was born Sept. 2, 1908, in Doris, Calif., a daughter of Fred and Margaret (Wilson) Inlow. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1920 from California.
Ms. Hull owned and operated two cafes on Central Avenue in Medford, the Ham and Egger and the Sliding Door. She later raised and trained Siberian Huskies for 16 years.
She was an active member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.
Ms. Hull enjoyed dogs and spending time with her family.
Survivors include a son, Robert Crowl, Kent, Wash.; three sisters, Lila Peile, Reedsport, Alma Parsons, Poulsbo, Wash., and Viola, Spokane, Wash.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred, Harvey and Roy; and two sisters, Eva and Ambrey.

Leonard M. Shreeve Sr.
Leonard M. Shreeve Sr., 88, of Medford, died Saturday (April 7, 2001) in Medford. A private service will be held.
He was born Sept. 19, 1912, in Woodland, Wash. In 1932, he graduated from Medford Senior High School, where he was All-State in football. On July 29, 1934, in Grants Pass, he married Frances Dorf on, who died in 1998.
Mr. Shreeve lived in Dufer, then Medford, where he worked as a truck delivery person and later as a sales manager for Fluhrer’s Bakery, now Williams Bakery. He lived in Yreka, Calif., for two years, then returned to Medford in 1936.
He was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge and the Elk Lodge.
Mr. Shreeve enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include four sons, Larry, Medford, Leonard, Eugene, Lloyd, Hermiston, and Lynn, Springfield; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Lewis; and 11 brothers and sisters.

Francis ‘Bud’ Applegate
The graveside service for Francis M. "Bud" Applegate will be at 11 a.m. today at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Bonny Jueden will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.
Mr. Applegate, 84, of Rogue River, died Friday (April 6, 2001) at Three Rivers Hospital, Washington Campus, Grants Pass.
He was born July 3, 1916, in Trenton, Mo. He received a degree in business from Chilicothe College in Missouri. On April 24, 1937, in Albany, Mo., he married Virginia "Ruth" Richardson, who survives.
Mr. Applegate worked as superintendent of operations for General Dynamics in San Diego, for 25 years. He also worked as a crew chief for the U.S. Forest Service in Miramonte, Calif., and raised Hereford cattle while living in Miramonte.
During World War II, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Applegate was a member of the American Polled Hereford Association, as well as Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4116 in Rogue River, and the Woodmen of the World Fraternity.
He was a professional fiddle player with the A.C.A. Ranch Hands Band, and traveled with the band, playing at square dances. He was also a member of the Oregon Old Time Fiddlers Association.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Gary C., Rogue River; three grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.
