Margie Madge Roethler

The graveside service for Margie Madge Roethler will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memory Gardens Mortuary in Medford.

Mrs. Roethler, 80, of Medford, died Wednesday (April 18, 2001) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Miss Rogue Valley Scholarship Pageant, P.O. Box 8116, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born Margie Smith on March 15, 1921, in Merrill, Wis. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1947. On Dec. 18, 1947, in Medford, she married Eugene R. Roethler, who died in 1978.

Mrs. Roethler was a real estate agent for Fair City Real Estate until her retirement in 1989.

She was the director of the first Miss Rogue Valley Pageant.

Mrs. Roethler enjoyed singing, reading, traveling and water skiing.

Survivors include two sons, Rene, Eugene, and Craig, Portland; a stepson, Steve Campbell, Indianapolis; two daughters, Toni Henselman and Lynn Roethler, both Medford; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Pam Bramlett.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Jerry W. Clark

Jerry W. Clark, 64, of Gold Hill, died Monday (April 16, 2001) at his home. No service is planned.

Survivors include a brother, Arthur, Sapulpa, Okla.

Arrangements: Grants Pass Funeral Alternatives.

Sara B. ‘Beth’ Bishop

The family and friends of Sara Bernice "Beth" Bishop will gather at 2 p.m. Saturday at the home of Daniel and Linda Bishop, 3885 Harbrooke Road, Medford.

Sara, 18, of Medford, died Tuesday (April 10, 2001) in an auto accident in Phoenix.

Memorial contributions may be made to Scholarship Fund, c/o F.F.A. Advisor, Phoenix High School, 745 N. Rose St. Phoenix, OR 97535. The scholarship fund is for agricultural college-bound seniors.

She was born July 19, 1982, in Ashland, and attended schools in Talent and Phoenix. She graduated from Phoenix High School in 2000, and was currently enrolled at Rogue Community College.

Sara was a veterinary technician at Banfield Pet Hospital in Medford.

She was an active member of the 4-H Club for nine years and was a member of Future Farmers of America. She was also a member of Adventure Unlimited.

Sara enjoyed animals, four-wheeling, team penning and spending time with her friends.

Survivors include her parents, Daniel and Linda Bishop, Medford; a brother, Johnathon Bishop, Medford; and her grandmothers, Bettie Barrett, Pebble Beach, Calif., and Marie Bishop, Springfield.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

Ashton Foerst

The memorial service for Ashton Foerst will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Applegate Community Church. Pastor Earl Best will officiate.

Mr. Foerst, 97, of Applegate, died Monday (April 9, 2001) at Three Rivers Hospital, Dimmick Campus, Grants Pass.

He was born Feb. 16, 1904, in Sawyers Bar, Calif. His family moved to the Applegate Valley in 1911, and he attended Provolt Elementary and Applegate High School. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living graduate of Applegate School. He received a degree in agriculture in 1928 from Oregon State University. On July 25, 1947, he married Jane Easly, who died in 1979.

Mr. Foerst was the principal at Kerby Elementary from 1938 to 1940. He led the Veterans Program for Josephine County from 1947 to 1956, and taught agriculture at Grants Pass High School from 1956 to 1968. He retired to his farm in the Applegate Valley in 1968.

He was a member of the Applegate Valley Historical Society, the Josephine County Retired Teachers Association, the Jackson County Stockmen’s Association and Provolt Community Church.

Survivors include a son, George, Applegate; a daughter, Laura Foerst, Duluth, Minn.; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hull and Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass.

Rolf Holmstrom

The memorial service for Rolf Holmstrom will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Forest Grove Senior Center, 2037 Douglas St., Forest Grove. Pastor Pat James, of True Hope Fellowship in Forest Grove, will officiate. Private inurnment will be at Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove.

Mr. Holmstrom, 78, of Forest Grove, formerly of Medford, died April 4, 2001, at Jennings-McCall II Assisted Living Center in Forest Grove.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Washington County Hospice, 427 S.E. Eighth Ave., Hillsboro, OR 97123.

He was born Oct. 28, 1922, in McKinley, the son of Charles and Frances (Johnson) Holmstrom. He was raised and educated in the Coquille community, graduating from Coquille High School in 1941. On March 4, 1948, in Coquille, he married Elizabeth Anne "Betty" Eggers, who died in 1998. They lived in Coos County until 1954, when they moved to Medford. They lived in Medford for 24 years until 1978, when they moved to Vancouver, Wash. Following his wife’s death, he moved to Forest Grove in 1999.

Mr. Holmstrom was a bus driver for Greyhound until his retirement in 1981.

He served in the U.S. Army at the Panama Canal during World War II.

Mr. Holmstrom was a member of the Minnihaha Church in Vancouver, Wash., and attended True Hope Fellowship in Forest Grove. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed RV travel and had helped with the PTBoaters restoration project in Portland.

He was known for his sense of humor, and enjoyed woodworking, sailing, fishing and reading.

Survivors include a son, Charles E., Ventura, Calif.; three daughters, JoAnne Brooke, Stockton, Calif., and Kathleen Houston and Dana Holmstrom, both Forest Grove; a sister, Anna Smith, Coquille; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Fruiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home, Forest Grove.

Elsie Mae Walsh

The graveside service for Elsie Mae Walsh will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Garden of Memories in Salinas, Calif. The Rev. Mike Ladri of the First Presbyterian Church in Salinas will officiate.

Mrs. Walsh, 95, of Medford, died Wednesday (April 11, 2001) at her home.

She was born Aug. 10, 1905, in Bellevue, Neb., a daughter of Charles and Laura (Holloway) Heydon. On Dec. 15, 1923, in Bellevue, Neb., she married Ollie Walsh, who died in 1971.

Mrs. Walsh was a homemaker. Formerly of Salinas, Calif., she lived in Bend from 1991 to 1999, when she moved to the Rogue Valley.

Survivors include three sons, Bob, Shady Cove, Loyd, Bend, and Charles, Donna, Texas; two daughters, Lois Stark, Medford, and Ada Hodges, Manteca, Calif.; 27 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sons, Dan and Dick; four sisters; and two brothers.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Nelse Geary Sr.

Nelse "Patches" Geary Sr., 72, formerly of Trail, died March 12, 2001, at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. The memorial service was held in March.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hahnemann University Hospital, Attn: CFO, Broad and Vine streets, Philadelphia, PA 19102.

He was born in Trail, the son of Samuel E. II and Ethel Conovor Geary.

Mr. Geary retired from the Hamilton Board of Education after 18 years. He owned Nelann Sheet Rocking Co. for more than 15 years.

During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force, where he taught Arctic survival in Alaska.

Mr. Geary was a former Boy Scout leader of Troop 14, and a former basketball coach for the Explorer Scouts.

He enjoyed carpentry, camping, fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Anna Evanosich; five sons, Nelse Jr., Samuel E., John S., Daniel P., and David B.; two daughters, Marsha A. Fijalkowski, and Sharon E. Green; two brothers, Delbert K, Grants Pass, and Don L., Lakeview; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Michael N. and Francis J.; and three siblings, Norman, LaVern and Bonnie.

Arrangements: Buklad Yardville Memorial Chapel.

Hazel Bales

An open house reception in memory of Hazel F. Bales will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the clubhouse of Rogue Valley South, 4624 S. Pacific Highway, Phoenix.

Mrs. Bales, 91, of Phoenix, died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hearts & Vines Foundation for Dunn House, P.O. Box 1441, Medford, OR 97501, or the Southern Oregon Historical Society, 106 N. Central, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Feb. 9, 1910, in Prosser, Wash., a daughter of William H. and Inez N. (Bennett) Evans. On Sept. 5, 1931, in Prosser, Wash., she married Irvin Bales, who died in 1990. She lived in Scotch Plains, N.J., from 1940 to 1964; Palo Alto, Calif., from 1964 to 1971; and in Arizona and Washington from 1971 to 1993. She moved to Phoenix in 1993.

Mrs. Bales was an active volunteer with the church and in the community. She was a member of the Southern Oregon Historical Society.

She enjoyed gardening, genealogy, golfing and playing bridge.

Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Capp, Ashland; a son, Richard W., East Otto, N.Y.; a brother, William H. Evans Jr., Lacrosse, Wash.; a sister, Berenice Barber, Post Falls, Idaho; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ida Barber.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.
