Diana “Chama” Alina Sanchez
July 29, 1964 – January 17, 2011
She lived her life with a vibrancy and optimism that was contagious. Diana “Chama” Sanchez left this world on January 17, 2011, but only after having one last dance with her beloved wife Sandy Bacharach. The night before she succumbed to her three and a half year battle with ovarian cancer, Chama was out dancing on a date night with her wife.
That’s how Chama lived her life. Although fighting an exhausting battle with a nasty disease, she still made time to enjoy friends and family, gathering them around in her last days.
Chama was born in Caracas, Venezuela on July 29, 1964 and came to the US in 1983 to study at University North Carolina Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College. She moved to Portland in 1991 with then partner Laura Stroupe and friends Brad Wilson and Michael Langdon.
Chama worked for years in the restaurant business and was manager at Café Flavors in Charlotte. She spent a year in Venezuela in 1989 as vice president of her family’s metal company, overseeing 120 employees. She trained as a computer programmer and worked at PGE and CMD in Portland. She returned to school later in life and was very proud to have completed her bachelor’s degree at OSU in 2008.
She cherished her friendships, especially best friends Miriam and Tay, who along with her wife, were with her as she took her last breath—at home in her own bed, as she wanted it.
Chama and Sandy wed on September 13, 2008 in Corbett, Oregon in a celebration that brought friends and family from Colombia, Venezuela, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Germany, Miami and many places in between. In 2009, their son Tevi was born.
Chama loved to travel, whether it was a weekend in Bend, a family reunion in Colombia, or relaxing week on the beaches of Mexico. Chama loved music of all kinds and in her younger years was a Grateful Dead fan. She loved to play cards – poker and Spades- with her friends. Chama was active all her life and played softball and volleyball on Team Quest in Portland. She loved running in Forest Park with her friends, snow boarding, hiking, biking, watching women’s basketball, swimming in warm waters and camping. She climbed Mt. Hood in 2000 to celebrate Miriam’s 30th birthday.
In the early 90s she bought a Volkswagen campervan, painted it bright yellow, named it Banana Vanna and drove to festivals and camping trips all over the South. She was an avid motorcycle rider, a member of WOW (Women on Wheels) and participated in a weeklong trip in 2000 to raise money for breast cancer.
Most of all, Chama cherished the people in her life. Once she realized death was inevitable, she opened her home to visitors and many passed through in her final days, sharing a last laugh, walk or card game with their friend.
Chama is survived by her wife, Sandy, and their son, Tevi, a sister and brother in Venezuela, Silvia Sanchez de Pinzon and brother Daniel Sanchez, her beloved in-laws, Bob and Jacki Bacharach, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and dear friends, both near and far.
A memorial will be held Saturday, January 29th (2pm nature walk and 3pm a ceremony) at the World Forestry Center at 4033 SW Canyon Rd, Portland OR 97221, (503) 228-1367 (http://worldforestry.org/). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, http://www.ovariancancer.org/, or to the Forest Park Conservancy, http://forestparkconservancy.org/.
