O. Eugene Wood

Born in Hamilton County Indiana, near the town of Sheridan, on October 23, 1923, to Walter Scott and Pearl Savannah (Hubbart) Wood, Gene Wood passed from this life to his heavenly home on Sunday, October 31, 2010. Following a brief private service at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Oregon, December 03, a public memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 04, at Newberg Friends Church in Newberg, Oregon.

Mr. Wood is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Barbara (Goins) Wood, three sons: Dennis, of Zionsville, Indiana; Steven, of Vancouver Washington; Stanley, of Wilmington, North Carolina; and, respectively, three daughters-in-law, Marsha, Donna, and Debbie. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was the youngest and last remaining child among 11 siblings.

Prior to making their home at Friendsview Retirement Community in Newberg, Oregon, in 2003, Gene and Barbara lived in Florida for 32-years, moving first from Indianapolis, Indiana, to St. Petersburg in 1971, then to Port Charlotte in 1995.

He and Barbara began their married life after Gene entered the Army during the build-up to World War II. Their life as a couple was interrupted by his war-time service in Central Europe, including participation in the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach which cost the lives of 6 in every 10 members of his Army infantry unit. Continuing service with the 453rd anti-aircraft artillery automatic weapons battalion included the Battle of the Bulge and other significant combat experiences. In recognition of that service he was awarded five bronze stars, among other awards.

Upon discharge from the military he and Barbara set out to establish their home and raise their growing family in Marion, Indiana. As sincerely dedicated Christians they became active members of South Marion Friends Church, where Gene became Sunday School Superintendent and an active leader. Later in life he and Barbara served as a presenting couple with the Christian Marriage Encounter movement.

Mr. Wood’s career in sales began as a child peddling Cloverine Salve door-to-door. Later he sold and delivered candy to retail stores in Indiana, then transitioned to direct sales of cookware. From 1958 until his retirement in 1990 he sold floor coverings as a distributor salesman and manufacturer’s representative. Wherever he worked, he was always the top sales person … or neck-in-neck with a worthy challenger for that top spot.

Gene’s avocational interests included the perfection of all-around handy-man skills, owning and managing rental properties, the propagation of plants, and golf.

Known as a guy who never met a stranger, Gene had an amazing ability to take a chance-encounter to a new-found friendship, and to do so in a matter of minutes. This was not only a natural gift, but also something he cultivated. Before calling on a customer, Gene would review notes kept on index cards – just to refresh his memory. He wanted to make sure he didn’t fail to ask George, back in the warehouse, if his son Bobby had made the team, or if Jerry’s boy had gotten that first base-man’s slot. He wanted to make sure that people knew that what mattered to them mattered to him.

He was and always will be remembered as a positive, can-do person, who saw what needed to be done and then got it done without fan-fare. He was an encouraging friend and conscientious father. But more than anything, he will be remembered as the respectful, faithful, and loving partner to Barbara – his equal and the one who completed his life.

Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center – Tualatin.
