Susann Kay Hunter Gilbert
Susann Kay Hunter Gilbert passed away on May 16th, 2010 in Lake Oswego, Oregon. She was born in Salem, Oregon on May 8th, 1933 to Allyn and Mildred Hunter, and had one sibling, Steven, who was seven years her junior.
Susann was raised in Eastmoreland, where she excelled as a competitive figure skater. She went on to attend the University of Oregon, and in 1953 married James A. Archer. They had three children, Cammie, Jim & Sally, as well as many a family dog by her side. While raising her children as a stay-at-home mom, Susann became an accomplished seamstress and artist, while also spending time teaching exercise and aerobics classes. She was a member of the Portland Figure Skating Association, and worked for many years at the Mt. Park Racquet Club.
After Susann’s children completed their schooling she divorced and began a new chapter in her life. She moved from Portland, where the children had been raised, to Lake Oswego where she met her future husband John Gilbert at Christ Episcopal Church. She developed a special love for John and her congregation, and became devoted to serving her Lord in a multitude of ways. She was a devoted member of the Church Choir and especially loved playing in the Bell Choir. In 1993 Susann and John were married, and continued to enjoy life while supporting their grandchildren in all their activities.
When Susann’s father-in-law, Jack Winninger, became ill, Susann and John took Jack under their generous care for several years until his death in 1999. Shortly after Jack’s death, Susann’s husband John was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and Susann supported and cared for him until his death in 2008. For over ten years Susann’s life consisted of being a devoted Christian and taking care of her family without once complaining or feeling sorry for herself.
After losing her husband, Susann was diagnosed with liver cancer. After fighting the disease for over a year it became apparent this was a battle she could not win, and she decided to trade the quantity of her time left for the quality of her life by stopping her treatments. Her strong faith combined with the support of her family got her through the tough times until her final passing on May 16th, 2010.
Susann Gilbert will be remembered in many ways, however it was chiefly her ability to care for people and support them in a positive way that will be especially remembered by those who knew and loved her.
Susann is survived by her three children, Cammie Ware, Jim Archer and Sally Archer, and by her three grandchildren, Joseph & Brittany Archer and Hunter Ware, who are all exceedingly proud to be known as grandchildren to her.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 at Christ Episcopal Church Parish, located at 1060 Chandler Road in Lake Oswego, Oregon.
