Daryl Roland

There is much to remember and much to be thankful for as we remember Daryl and the way he shared his life with those around him.

He was born on Dec 24, 1919 and died Nov 25, 2009 in Gladstone, Oregon. Daryl was born in Cozad, Nebraska. He grew up in the Ozark Hills of Missouri until the age of 12. His family then moved around from Pomona, Ca., back to Missouri, and then out west to Ontario, Oregon.

After grad from HS –Daryl worked on farms and ranches around Ontario. In 1940 he married Ara Mc Daniel and they both attended college at Walla Walla. Daryl went into the Navy during WWII. He did basic training in Washington, and served as a lab technician in San Diego and Puerto Rico. Daryl went back to school and graduated. Though Daryl had worked on the farm and sold insurance, he worked most of his life as a lab technician in Southern California.

Daryl and Ara had two boys, Larry and David. They raised the boys around Ontario, to Woodland, CA, and then Loma Linda, CA. Family was everything to Daryl. He wife was the love of his life. He told me often how proud he was of his boys. Daryl and Ara have 5 grandchildren; Kristen, Andrew, Hugh, Louise, and Jordan.

Daryl was deeply involved in his church and a lifelong member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He lived his life the way he believed. Daryl’s calling was to be kind, friendly, and help others. Daryl never met a stranger. He could talk to anyone and make them his friend. Daryl was an avid rock hound. He loved hunting for rocks and then polishing them. Daryl could fix anything from fixing/building a car to repairing homes. Another of his hobbies was horses.

Daryl and Ara retired and moved to Oregon in 1989. Their goal was to be by Larry and help with his kids. Daryl and Ara watched all three of Larry’s kids before school and after until one of the parents could pick them up. Many times I would come to pick up Jordan, and find Daryl and Jordan in the shop. He would be teaching her how to polish rocks, making arrowheads, or they would be playing school with Jordan being the teacher. Daryl loved to take Andrew fishing. Today I think fishing is Andrews’s main hobby do to Daryl.

Daryl is survived by his wife, Ara Roland in Gladstone, OR. His sons Larry Roland of Lake Oswego, OR and David Roland of Rancho Santa Fe, CA and his two brothers Cyril Roland and Theodore Roland both of Payette, Id.

Services will be held in Ontario, Or on Friday, Dec 4 at 1pm at the Lienkaemper Funeral Home, 78 NW 1st Ave. Memorial contributions may be made to ADRA — Adventist Disaster Relief Agency at www.adra.org
