Mona Harriet Metcalf Frederick
Mona Harriet Metcalf Frederick, 91, of Harbor, died Jan. 23, 2005, at her home of natural causes.
She was born July 30, 1913, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, to Harry Edward Metcalf and Erma Feldora Higgins Metcalf.
She was a beauty college graduate.
She married
Harold Eugene Frederick June 10, 1934, at Balboa Park in San Diego
They moved to Grants Pass in August 1945.
She owned and operated Mona's Beauty Salon in Grants Pass for many years before retiring and moving to Brookings.
Mona took up oil painting late in life. She also made and taught others to make a great number of dip and drape-style Wisemen. She knitted many items for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was involved in making many creative craft items.
She was a member of First Baptist Community Church of Brookings.
Survivors include her husband of Harbor; daughter and son-in-law Carol Ann and Jerry Jaeger of Cambridge, Idaho. Also surviving are five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Margaret Metcalf, who died as a child, and Florence Parker.
A memorial service was held Jan. 28, at First Baptist Community Church. Pastor Ken Whitted officiated.

Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory.
Jules G. Ferron
Jules G. Ferron, 84, of Longview, Wash., died Jan. 24, 2005, in Hospice Care Center in Longview of natural causes.
In 1955 he immigrated from Paris to Olympia, Wash., where he earned his engineering degree from Evergreen State College.
Shortly afterward, he settled in Redwood City, Calif. He was employed 25 years by the Raychem Corp. where he made parts for customers such as the Alaska Pipeline and NASA.
After he retired, he moved to Brookings, where he lived 25 years. He moved to Longview eight months ago.
He was an avid animal lover who often took in strays. His hobbies were fishing, smoking a good cigar, conversing with men and flirting with women, his family said. He was an active member of the Brookings Elks, USA member for 19 years.
Survivors include granddaughter Paloma Kunzelmann of Longview; son Jean-Marie Ferron of St. Pierre Aigle, France; stepdaughter Ang Kunzelmann of Brookings; grandson Vincent Ferron and great-granddaughter Solena Ferron, both of Quebec; close friend Monica Yokel of Longview.
No services will be held.

Cremation was under the direction of Columbia Funeral Service, Longview.
Carol Ann Slayton
Carol Ann Slayton, 59, of Ontario, died Jan. 26, 2005, in Ontario of natural causes.
She was born Aug. 27, 1945, in Coquille, to Frank and Verena Corzine.
She graduated from Brookings-Harbor High School in 1963.
She lived in Brookings and Crescent City 28 years and recently moved to Ontario.
Her greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren, and her many friends. Her hobbies included bowling, hunting, skiing and cooking. Later in life she cherished camping and fishing with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband Charles "Rusty" Slayton of Ontario; sons Jeff and his wife Theresa Slayton of Crescent City, Marc and his wife Megan Slayton of Crescent City; parents Frank and Verena Corzine of Brookings; brother Frank Corzine of Winston; sister Bonnie Heimgartner of Modesto, Calif.; grandchildren Jessica Slayton, Shelby Slayton, Benjamin Slayton, Anthony Slayton, Molly Slayton. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother Donald Corzine.
A funeral service will be held at Wier's Mortuary Chapel at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 2. Following the service, interment will take place at WJ Ward Memorial cemetery, Brookings.

Betty Jean Etter Smith
Betty Jean Etter Smith, 71, of Brookings, died Jan. 21, 2005, at her home of natural causes .
She was born July 31, 1933, in Eureka, Calif., to Adrian Charles Etter and Gertrude Eleanor Herman Etter.
Mrs. Smith graduated from Ukiah High School in 1951.
She married
George Allan Sutherland Smith Aug. 7, 1951, in Carson City, Nev.
Mrs. Smith was a nurses aide, retiring after 30 years in the field.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Rachel and Michael Crump of Portland; son and daughter-in-law Jesse and Kay Sutherland of Kelseyville, Calif.; daughter Helon Smith of Grants Pass; daughter and son-in-law Delores and Bob Reed of Union City, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law Aaron and Tami Smith of Redmond. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers Glen Etter and Harold Etter; grandson Nicholas Smith.
In accordance with Mrs. Smith's wishes, no public services will be held.

Armand Mario Pihl
Armand Mario Pihl, 91, of Chico, Calif. died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Twin Oaks Health and Rehabilitation in Chico, following a lengthy illness.
Armand was born Jan. 12, 1914, in Malden, Mass., to Armand Constantine and Marion Vistue Steeves Pihl.
In his early years, Mr. Pihl and his family moved to Southern California, living in Pasadena, Santa Monica and Monrovia. One of the highlights of his life, his family said, was playing in his high school marching band in the Rose Parade.
Following high school, he worked in a variety of construction jobs, including the building of a dam in Ridgecrest, Calif.
During World War II, he was employed by a civilian construction company building a road to Russia and working on projects in Africa and Persia.
Upon returning to the United States, Mr. Pihl worked as a salesman for Frank Fey and Co. in Berkeley, Calif. and Claar Chevrolet Co. in Richmond, Calif.
In the early 1960s he attended Law's School of Marine Engineering in Oakland, Calif., and became licensed as an engineer on steam vessels.
From 1966 to 1979, he traveled the world as a civilian employee of the Military Sealift Command, Pacific, working on various naval ships, including the USS Upsure, Geiger, Arnold, Wheeling and Aeolus. These ships visited many foreign ports of call: Guam, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, United Kingdom as well as many U. S. ports.
In 1979 Armand retired as a 2nd Assistant Engineer. Following his retirement, he and his companion of many years traveled the U.S., Canada and Mexico in their RV.
They settled for a time in Spokane, Wash., and later lived in Brookings for approximately five years.
In 1998, the couple moved to Chico, Calif., to be near family.
Survivors include sons, Armand Leonard Pihl of Pahrump, Nev., and Brian Pihl of El Cerrito, Calif.; daughters, Alana Unger of Tiburon, Calif., and Kathlyn Pihl of Corte Madera, Calif.; companion Anna Pasinetti of Durham and her daughters Judy Brillhart of Durham, Calif., and Joanne Angel of Chico. Also surviving are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Elinore Johnson and Marian Fey.
A celebration of his life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 29, at Twin Oaks Health and Rehabilitation,1200 Springfield Drive, Room 2, Chico.
A private memorial and scattering of his ashes off the coast of Marin County will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a favorite charity.
