Betty Jeanne Tarr
Betty Jeanne Tarr, 77, of Brookings, died March 12, 2003, as a result of lung cancer.
Mrs. Tarr was born Feb. 27, 1926, in Seymour, Mo; the daughter of Robert W. and Agnes Christine (Hunt) Odle. She was raised in Missouri, moved as a teenager to Lindsay, Calif., and graduated from Lindsay High School.
In the following years, Mrs. Tarr raised a family of three children and worked in the medical field. She worked for a number of years at the Porterville State Hospital.
She lived briefly in Madera, Calif., before moving to Oakhurst, Calif., in 1964. In 1977, she moved to Crater Lake.
On Jan. 14, 1978, she married
Allan W. Tarr in Reno, Nev. The couple started an Alaska fishing business and spent their summers salmon fishing in Nak Nek. In 1989, they sold the business and began RV traveling full time, spending winters in Arizona.
The Tarrs made their home in Curry County since 1993 and, in 1995, they moved to Harbor.
Mrs. Tarr was a focused and determined person who set goals and worked hard to accomplish them, her family said. She enjoyed gardening, and was an avid reader. She was interested in learning throughout her life, and was a frequent visitor to the community library. She had recently taken up online card playing, and was busy learning to use the computer.
Dogs were an important part of Mrs. Tarr's life. She bred and raised miniature schnauzers, and did small animal grooming for friends and neighbors in earlier years.
She liked arts and crafts, including pretty punch embroidery. She collected clowns, and was an accomplished seamstress and an excellent cook. She also enjoyed clogging.
She is survived by her husband; daughter, Cherie Lynn Lovejoy of Santa Cruz, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy Anne and John Crane of Grass Valley, Calif; son and daughter-in-law, John Robert and Carol Lovejoy of Clovis, Calif; stepsons, Rick, Tim and Paul Tarr; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles R. and Crystal Odle of San Jose, Calif.; six grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Walter Odle.
Private family services will be at Lindsay City cemetery. Memorials may be made to Chetco Community Public Library, 405 Alder St., Brookings, OR 97415, or to Curry County Hospice, P.O. Box 746, Gold Beach, OR 97444.

Lowell Frederick Wing
Lowell Frederick Wing, 76, of Brookings, died March 24 2003, at his home of natural causes.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Evelyn S. Pomeroy
Evelyn "Eve" S. Pomeroy, 80, of Brookings, died March 24, 2003 in a local care facility of natural causes.
Pomeroy was born February 5, 1923 in London, England, a daughter of Walter and Evelin (Aldridge) Hollis. She was raised and educated in London, and remained an English citizen her entire life.
She joined the English army and served for 7 years as a draftsman. During WWII she narrowly escaped injury during the London blitz.
In 1946, she and Leland Pomeroy were married
in London. Following their marriage, she was a homemaker and stayed in London and in the United States during her husband's assignments to many areas of the world. She loved to travel, however, and after his retirement the couple visited many areas, including India and the Far East. She was an outgoing and friendly person who made friends wherever she went, her family said.
On an extended vacation to the States, the couple found Brookings, and have made their home here for the last 12 years.
Pomeroy bred and showed Kerry Blue Terriers in England. She also enjoyed gardening.
She is survived by her husband, Leland, of Brookings; and an "adopted" son, Michael Wright of England.

Barbara Kaye Hopfenzitz
Barbara Kaye "Barb" Hopfenzitz, 58, of Brookings, died March 20, 2003 at her home of natural causes.
Hopfenzitz was born September 22, 1944 in Omaha, Nebraska, a daughter of Arnold Lee Woodring and Kay Louise (Dirgo) Woodring. She was raised and educated in Pattonsburg, Missouri, and graduated from Pattonsburg High School.
In October of 1962, she married
Ewald Hopfenzitz, and the couple made their home in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she was employed as a telephone operator. They subsequently moved to Omaha, and later to Missouri, where the family lived for thirty-five years and raised their older children. During the years her children were in elementary school, she was employed as a crossing guard at Coverdell Elementary School in St. Charles, a job she greatly enjoyed.
In the early 1990s she began working at McDonald's in St. Charles and, following a move to Brookings in 1997, worked at McDonald's locally from 1997 until illness forced her retirement in December of 2002. She found personal satisfaction in serving people and seeing familiar customers.
While living in St. Charles, Hopfenzitz took up running and competed in several 10K and 5 mile races.
She collected dolls and music boxes, was an avid reader of mysteries and enjoyed Louise May Alcott stories. She enjoyed music of all kinds, and had an eclectic collection.
She was a very positive person, according to her family. She was outgoing and had a silly sense of humor. She cared deeply for animals, and they responded uniquely to her.
Survivors include her husband, Ewald, of Brookings; five children, Vicki Hopfenzitz, Martin Hopfenzitz , and Sammi (Carrie) Naes, all of St. Louis, Mo; Melanie Metheney and husband, Kyle, of Indianapolis, Ind; and Mark Hopfenzitz of Brookings; a brother, Walter Woodring of Omaha, Neb.; four sisters, Donna Gardner and Anita Jo Booth, both of Pattonsburg, Mo.; Marcia Devore of Kansas City, Mo; and Gloria Drummond of Yuba City, Calif.; and one grandchild, Collin Hopfenzitz of St. Charles, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her father, an infant daughter Cassandra, and a sister, Gayle Robertson.

A memorial service was held Monday, March 24th at Redwood Memorial Chapel in Brookings.
John "Scott" Maple
John "Scott" Maple, 73, of Harbor died March 31, 2003, at his home of cancer.
He was born March 18, 1930, in Dallas, Texas to Elmer Scott and Eunice Margaret Hemphill Maple.
He was raised and educated in Palestine, Texas. Following high school he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He married
Lovona Macivor in Las Vegas, Nev., on June 7, 1953.
Early in his working life he was employed at an oil refinery. He later became a pile driver and pile driver superintendent for many large construction projects in southern California. He took pride in his contribution to the completion of monumental projects such as the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angles Harbor, freeway bridges and various marinas in California.
The family followed Mr. Maple's work projects for several years, then settled in Ventura, Calif., where the children were raised. In 1986, the Maples moved to Brookings where he served on the Harbor Fire Department Board, and became a member of the Smith River Baptist Church. He also ran Scott's Fishing Charter in Brookings-Harbor in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
He treasured his wife and was dedicated to God, his family and country, his family said. He enjoyed fishing, marble collecting and bowling. He was quick to help others in need, quietly performing many acts of kindness and generosity.
Maple took pride in being a direct descendant of Arthur Middleton, who signed the Declaration of Independence.
Survivors include his wife, Lovona, of Harbor; son and daughter-in-law James Scott and Susan Maple of Greeley, Colo., daughter and son-in-law Kathy L. and Michael Alexander of Grants Pass, son Daniel Lee Maple of Harbor, daughter-in-law Kelly Maple of Central Point. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and special friends Susanne, Chuck, Stephanie and Charlie Marusich.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Aileen Gregory, and son John Frank Maple who died in 1993.
Services were held at the Smith River Baptist Church and committal was at W. J. Ward Memorial cemetery on Friday, April 4.
