Florence R. Oppelt
Florence R. Oppelt, 89, of Harbor, died, Dec. 16, 2002, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City of congestive heart failure.
She was born Nov. 29, 1913, in New Prague, Minn., to John and Mary Kubat.
She grew up and graduated from high school in Montgomery, Minn.
She attended college and graduated with a teaching certificate. She taught grades one through eight in rural Minnesota in schools where several grades were taught in the same classroom.
She often talked about driving her 1930 Model A through heavy snow to get to schools heated by coal stoves.
She married
William Scott (Scotty) Oppelt on June 6, 1938, at the Catholic Church in Montgomery. They had been sweethearts since they met in the third grade.
The couple lived in Montgomery until 1941 when they moved to Klamath Falls to take advantage of a job opportunity. When the job didn't turn out as planned they headed back to Minnesota.
After taking a short trip up the Oregon Coast before going back to Montgomery, they decided to stay in Oregon. They lived in Klamath Falls until World War II during which time they worked in the Portland shipyards.
After the war, they returned to Klamath Falls where they bought, remodeled and sold several homes, owned and operated a Mom and Pop hardware store and built and operated a 95-unit apartment complex.
In the early 1980s, they kept a boat and RV in Harbor and spent a lot of time ocean fishing. In 1986, they sold their home and businesses in Klamath Falls, bought property in Harbor and built a home.
Mrs. Oppelt enjoyed her ocean view home and her flowers and yard.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Scotty Oppelt of Harbor; daughter and son-in-law, Jeneane Oppelt-Hill and John Hill of Klamath Falls.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Judy Kay in 1976.
In accordance with Mrs. Oppelt's wishes, she will be cremated. A picnic is planned for her family and friends in June at Harris Beach, which was one of her favorite places. The date of the picnic will be announced later.
Mrs. Oppelt requested in lieu of contributions, each person should take a loved one out for a nice dinner in her memory.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Chapel and Crematory, Crescent City.
Ruby Collins
Ruby Collins, 84, of St. Stephens, S.C. died Feb. 28, 2003, in St. Stephens.
She was born Sept. 4, 1918, to Samuel McBee Turner and Ella Markum Turner.
She had been a resident of Brookings from the late 1970s until 2001.
Survivors include three children. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Earl A. Collins, Sr.

R.B ‘Bob' Burns, Peggy Jo Burns
R.B "Bob" Burns, 81, and Peggy Jo Burns, 76, of Harbor died on March 3, 2003, in a boating accident in Harbor.
Mr. Burns was born Aug. 11, 1921, in Oklahoma. Mrs. Burns was born Nov. 23, 1926, in Ada, Okla. They were married
Sept. 29, 1941.
Mr. Burns was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He worked for 23 years as a switchman for Southern Pacific Railroad in Bakersfield and Fresno, Calif.
Mrs. Burns worked as a grocery clerk for 25 years in Bakersfield and Fresno. In 1982 the couple retired to Harbor. They both enjoyed many years with family and friends. They will be greatly missed, the family said.
They are survived by two sons, James Burns of Sonora, Calif., and Jerry Burns of Fresno, Calif.; grandchildren, Jim, Timmy, Danny and Eric Burns, all of Fresno; Mrs. Burns' sister, Tresa Destefani of Bakersfield, Calif., and a niece, Cindy Destefani of Stigler, Okla.
Private services have been conducted under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel, Crescent City.
Henry Gideon Lustig
Henry Gideon Lustig, 65, died March 3, 2003, in Gold Beach of natural causes.
Mr. Lustig was born July 25, 1937, in Vienna, Austria, the son of Oscar and Pepi (Weitzner) Lustig.
At the age of 14 months, Henry immigrated with his parents to Haifa, Israel, where he was raised and educated. He served two years in the Israel army, then entered the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. Mr. Lustig graduated in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in physics.
After graduation, he immigrated to the United States and began working in research at Massachusetts General Hospital. He concurrently attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He became a naturalized citizen in 1967. On Sept. 2 of the same year, he and Carole Ann Bernard were married
. In 1971, Mr. Lustig completed a master's degree in electrical engineering from University of Vermont.
The couple made their home in Holliston, Mass. Henry took employment with IBM in their research department and was transferred to New York, then Virginia and later Vermont. The family resided in Vermont for 18 years.
Mr. Lustig retired at the age of 55. The Lustigs moved to Ophir in December 1993.
Mr. Lustig was a strict disciplinarian, and believed strongly in the importance of education and lifelong learning. He followed advances in computers and enjoyed the Internet. He read technical literature for pleasure and was passionate about the game of chess. Henry enjoyed the Port Orford and Brookings Chess Club competitions.
He enjoyed listening to classical music in his leisure time, and was a member of MENSA.
Mr. Lustig was interested in politics and local government. He followed the commissioners' meetings, and was a vocal advocate of fiscal and government conservation and responsibility. He stood up for his personal convictions and was unconcerned about others agreeing or disagreeing with him.
Survivors include his wife, of Ophir; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Judy Ann of Quincy, Mass.; a daughter, Sonja Lustig of Connecticut; a brother, Shmulik "Sam" Lustig of Israel; two nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services are pending. Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory, Brookings.
Charlene Freeland
Charlene Freeland, 58, of Brookings, died this week at her home.
She was born March 6, 1944, in Nebraska, and was adopted as a newborn by Rev. Harold Pegg and his wife, Lucille.
As a teenager, she moved with her family to Lakewood, Calif., where she completed her education. Following high school, Ms. Freeland worked as an AT&T; operator in Southern California. She later worked for the Monterrey County school district as a teacher of disabled children and veterans. A severe injury at work forced her retirement in 1989. Ms. Freeland loved the Oregon Coast, and had made her home in Brookings since 1990.
While living in California, she was a part owner of a dragster driven by her partner, drag racer Don "The Snake" Prudhome and was a member of the National Hotrod Racing Association.
She was a generous and big-hearted person who loved to shop and give to others, family members said. Many friends have been the recipient of her shopping "finds." She was outgoing, and had been the "neighborhood mom" while raising her family.
Ms. Freeland owned a teacup Chihuahua named Jewell that was her constant companion.
She is survived by a daughter, Anna Irizarry and her fiance, Sean Fitzpatrick, of Simi Valley, Calif.; and grandchildren, Ashley, Laura, Jason, Jessica, Alexis and Megan.
