Phyllis Horrell

Phyllis Horrell, 68, Baker City, died May 20, 2001 in Kuna.

She was born Jan. 11, 1933, in Eugene to Elmer and Thelma Ware.

She grew up in the Willamette Valley. In 1951, she married Jim Wolfe. Soon after their marriage, they left on a New Tribes mission. She served as a missionary in Brazil for nearly a year.

After serving as missionaries, they had a son and two daughters.

She and her husband were living in Central Oregon in 1977 when her husband died after a logging accident.

In 1979, she met John Horrell. They were married in 1981. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Brookings where they lived until 1992 when they moved to Henderson, Nev. They lived in Henderson until 1994, when they moved to Baker City, and established their sign painting business.

Mrs. Horrell held a variety of jobs outside of the home from various secretarial jobs to owning her own chicken restaurant to being a cook for the Head Start program.

Survivors are her husband, John Horrell of Baker City; son, Jim R. Wolfe of Chemult; daughters, Kerry A. Sherman of Baker City; Tammy R. Overstreet of Boise, Idaho; sister, Norma Plummer of Salem; step-daughters, Judy Coon of Las Vegas, Nev; Linda Jablonski of Sioux City, Iowa; step-son, Bob Horrell of Texas.

Also surviving are 12 grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents.

Donations in her memory may be made to Mountain States Tumor Institute, 100 E. Idaho St., Boise, ID 83702.

Harold G. Marz

Harold G. Marz, 77, Brookings, died May 30, 2001, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City of a massive heart attack.

He was born May 31, 1923, in Elizabeth, N.J., to Edward and Marie Marz.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy for three years as an aviation cadet and mechanic during which he was stationed throughout the United States.

After his discharge from the service, he enrolled in Rutgers University, where he met and married Sally Spiegel. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in geology in 1950.

Following graduation, he was in the Naval Hydrographic Office, then worked two years as an oil well logger for Ellis Laboratories.

Upon moving to California in 1954, he taught for Los Angeles city schools. While teaching, he finished a master’s in education from California State University, Northridge in 1964.

In 1978, he retired from the school district and moved to Garberville, Calif., then Eugene and finally Brookings in 1993.

He was a member of the Elks, life member of Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of geology, woodworking and mechanics, officials said.

Survivors include his wife of Brookings; daughters, Lila Marz Harper of Ellensburg, Wash.; Lisa Marz-Reed of Harrisburg, Pa.; brother, Edward Marz of Mansfield, Ohio; sister, Ruth Stumpp of Beacon, N.Y.; grandson, Artemus Harper of Ellensburg; granddaughter, Sara Harper of Ellensburg; nephew, George Stumpp of Beacon; niece, Carol Sneyd of Beacon.

A memorial service is planned for today (June 6) at 2 p.m. at Litty’s Brookings Chapel, 517 Railroad St.

Clifford Arthur Rutter

Clifford Arthur Rutter, 87, Brookings, died June 7, 2001, at home.

He was born Sept. 28, 1913, in Cove, to William and Ethel (Greenough) Rutter.

He served in the Navy See-Bees during World War II. In 1947, he joined his father and five brothers in Roseburg and Grants Pass in working for CopCo, now Pacific Power and Light.

Mr. Rutter became a line foreman in the transmission department and then retired to Brookings after 35 years.

He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors are his wife, Avagene “Genie” Rutter; daughters, Sharon Dykeman of Vancouver, Wash.; Rebecca Ferguson of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; sister, Joan Knutson of Glide.

Also surviving are eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A private interment will be held in Grants Pass at the Hawthorne Memorial.

George Cummings

George Cummings, 67, Brookings, died June 9, 2001, in Eureka, Calif.

He was born Nov. 7, 1933, in Richmond, Va.

He grew up in Virginia and Pennsylvania.

He married Mary Cummings Oct. 24, 1953, in Doylestown, Pa.

Mr. Cummings served for 22 years in the Navy before being honorably discharged in July 1974.

He worked at Perkin-Elmer and retried in 1986. He moved to Brookings in May 1989 from San Jose, Calif.

Mr. Cummings was a past exalted ruled of the Brookings Elks Lodge and a past commander of the American Legion.

Survivors are wife, Mary Cummings of Brookings; son, George Cummings Jr. of Jackson, Calif.; daughter, Geri Hauck of Florence; brother, William Cummings of Cassel, Calif.

Also surviving are numerous nephews, nieces and special friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Frank and Dallas Cummings; brother, Frank Cummings, Jr.

A memorial service is planned for June 30 at 1 p.m. at the Brookings Elks Lodge.

Donations may be made to the Elks National Foundation or the Kidney Foundation. For information, call the Elks Lodge at (541) 469-2169.

Larry Allen Mason

Larry Allen Mason, 50, Harbor, died April 27, 2002, at his home of natural causes.

He was born March 5, 1952, in Whittier, Calif., to Robert E. and Dolores "Dee" Mason.

Mr. Mason was raised in Whittier and later attended Pasadena City College. He was employed as a dental lab technician until ill health forced his retirement. He lived in Harbor for 10 years.

Survivors include mother, Dee Sloan of Whittier; brother, Michael Mason and wife Debbie of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; nieces, Breezy and MacKenzie Mason; nephew, Garrett Mason; stepsister, Mari McCall and her husband Guy of Long Beach, Calif.; and stepbrother, Stephen Sloan and his wife, Cathy, of Irvine, Calif.

A private service of remembrance will be scheduled at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
