Merwin "Dick" Schilz
Merwin "Dick" Schilz, 78, Brookings, died Nov. 8, 1999.
He was born Dec. 17, 1920, in Silver Creek, Neb.
During World War II, he served for three years in the U.S. Navy. He was aboard the U.S.S. Charles Ausburne, under the command of Capt. Arleigh A. "31 Knot" Burke. The ship was the flagship of Destroyer Squadron 23, known as the Little Beaver Squadron, one of the most famous and most honored in Naval history.
He was married
to his wife Barbara on Dec. 19, 1987. The couple moved to the area from Paradise, Calif., in August 1989.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of Brookings; step-children Carol Shelton of Paradise, Christine Bagley of Seattle, Wash., and Thomas Bagley of Las Vegas, Nev.; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
His cremains will be scattered at sea by the U.S. Coast Guard. Arrangements are under the direction of Litty Funeral Directors Brookings Funeral Home.
James M. Gordon
Services have been held for James M. Gordon, 75, who died of cancer Nov. 6, 1999, at his home in Newport Beach, Calif.
Mr. Gordon was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and worked as an undercover agent for the Central Intelligence Agency around the world beginning in 1951. He enjoyed sailing.
Survivors include his son, Michael, of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Rowena Gordon of Monterey, Calif.; and a first cousin, Don McGehee of Brookings.
Donald Verle Brey
A memorial service for Donald Verle Brey, 62, Brookings, was held Nov. 1 at Victory Baptist Church.
He was born July 31, 1937, in LaCrosse, Wis., and died Oct. 27, 1999, in Brookings.
Mr. Brey moved to the area in 1953. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean conflict, and a member of Victory Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine Brey of Brookings; his mother, Barbara Brey of Brookings; a son, Johnnie Brey of Missouri; a daughter, Veronda Decker of Portland; two brothers, Butch Brey of Harbor and Barry Brey of Brookings; two sisters, Lorainine Niccum of Harbor and Loreta Sanders of Kirby; four grandsons, two granddaughters and one great-grandson.
Private inurnment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery at a later date. Arrangements were under the direction of Litty Funeral Directors Brookings Chapel.
Christopher "Allen" Persinger
Christopher "Allen" Persinger, 46, Eugene, died Feb. 25, 2000, of cancer.
He was born Nov. 12, 1953, in Los Angeles to Lee and Barbara Allen Persinger.
He served in the Army from 1970 to 1972 and lived in Brookings from 1977 to 1983. He married
Mary Keays in Brookings on March 14, 1982. He moved to Eugene in 1985.
He was a stained glass artist. He enjoyed singing, the outdoors, playing the guitar, making people laugh and spending time with friends and family.
Survivors include his wife Mary Persinger; son Shane Persinger, Eugene; daughter Katrina Persinger, Pleasant Hill; brothers Brian and Barry Persinger, both of Eugene; sister Kit Persinger, Eugene.
No services will be held. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements were under the direction of Chapel of Memories Funeral Home in Eugene.
Kenneth Wells
Kenneth Wells, 65, Gold Beach, died March 1, 2000.
He was born in Bishop, Calif., July 18, 1934, to Kenneth and Evelyn Wells. He spent many of his early years in Bishop.
Mr. Wells moved to Carson City, Nev., in 1958. He earned several automotive degrees and worked many years for Toyota. He also worked as a factory representative for Peugot. He worked for the Carson City School District for 10 years as a transportation supervisor until complications from his diabetes forced him into retirement.
He married
Melodee Reynolds in Reno, Nev, in 1985. In 1987, he and his wife relocated to Gold Beach.
He had a passion for automobiles, the outdoors and touring the countryside on his motorcycles.
Survivors are wife Melodee Wells, Gold Beach; mother Evelyn Wells, Sweet Home; brothers George Wells of Sweet Home; Gary Wells, Falls City; daughter Vickie Wells, Carson City; grandchildren Coleen and Gerry, both of Carson City.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Wells.
At his request, no formal services will be conducted.
Arrangements are under the direction of Scantlinšs Gold Beach Mortuary Chapel.
Nedra Helan Freiday
Nedra Helan Freiday, 83, Brookings, died March 2, 2000, in Crescent City.
She was born in Washington July 26, 1916, to parents Fred and Tilly (Neugebauer) Lowery. She was raised in Carfield, Wash. She graduated from Lewiston High School in Idaho.
Later, she moved to Spokane, Wash., where she married
William Freiday who passed away in 1977. She then relocated to Brooking and was very active in the community.
Mrs. Freiday was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Chetco Senior Center and she served on the Board of Community Concerts of Crescent City. She enjoyed many hobbies and interests which included reading, golfing, walking on the beach, traveling, and doing volunteer work for the chamber of commerce and Chetco Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Services are scheduled for March 8 at 2 p.m. at the Brookings Presbyterian Church. Pastor Warren Muller will officiate.

Charles E. Sanders Jr.
Charles E. Sanders Jr., 51, Seattle, died Feb. 22, 2000, after battling colon and liver cancer.
He was born March 5, 1948, in Los Angeles.
He moved with his family to Oregon in 1960. In 1966, he graduated from Brookings-Harbor High School. He met Pamela J. Young in Brookings and they were married
on June 15, 1969.
Mr. Sanders graduated from University of Oregon in 1970. In 1971, he and his wife moved to the Seattle area. Their daughter Erin was born in Washington on May 13, 1976.
He was a fabulous cook, brewed a mean beer, and loved sports, said his family. He also loved weekend trips antiquing with his wife, always searching for the next perfect addition to their collections.
Survivors are wife Pamela J. Sanders and daughter Erin Sanders, both of Seattle; parents Charles E. Sanders Sr. and Maryann Sanders, Redmond; sister Candice Sanders, Portland; dog Lily.
He will be dearly missed by his family and his friends.
A memorial service was held Feb. 25 at Bonney-Watson, Washington Memorial.
