Syble V. Smith
Syble V. Smith, 72, Brookings, died Oct. 16, 1999, at a Brookings care facility.
She was born Sept. 28, 1927, in Texas. Mrs. Smith had worked as a bookkeeper for a real estate firm until her retirement. She moved to the Brookings area from Arizona 2 1/2 years ago.
Her hobbies included reading and she was an advocate for animal rights.
Survivors include a close friend, Shannon Wilson, and her husband, Clive, of Brookings; and a daughter, Karen Harwood of Cottonwood, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde "Smitty" Smith and her parents.
At her request, no formal services will be conducted. Arrangements are under the direction of Scantlin's Brookings Mortuary and Chapel.
Timothy Arnold Hofmann
Oct. 23 -- A memorial service for Timothy Arnold Hofmann, 51, Applegate, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, at Applegate Community Church.
A graveside service at Missouri Flat cemetery will follow at noon.
Mr. Hofmann was born May 2, 1948, in Ashland to Arnold P. and Yvonne Mae Hofmann. He died Oct. 20, 1999, at his home.
He graduated from the New Hope Christian Church school, which he and his family helped build. He attended one year at Prairie Bible School in Three Hills, Alberta, Canada.
He married
Judith Mae Drake on July 13, 1968, in Murphy. In 1972, they moved to Brookings, where he worked for Brookings Plywood as a lathe operator.
The couple moved to Butte Falls in 1974, and to Applegate a few years later, where he owned and operated Hofmann Logging.
Mr. Hofmann was an active member of Murphy Chapel Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and helping his friends.
Survivors include his wife, Judith; two daughters, Colleen M. Hansen and Joelleen A. Hofmann, both of Grants Pass; a sister, Connie McMahan of Talent; a brother, Larry Hofmann of Tama, Iowa; and one grandchild.
Charles Edward O'Leary
Charles Edward O'Leary, 79, died Oct. 26 in Brookings following a lengthy illness.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a Disabled American Veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946.
He loved hunting and fishing and was involved in a black powder gun club.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Mullen O'Leary, formerly of Brooklyn, N.Y., son, Charles D. O'Leary, San Francisco; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Roger Cooke, Hawthorne, Calif., granddaughter Kenna O'Leary, Long Beach, Calif.; grandson Nathan Cooke and granddaughter Joanie Cooke, Hawthorne.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kerry John O'Leary of Middletown, N.J.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, in the Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Brookings. Private interment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery, Eagle Point, Ore.
Funeral arrangements were made through Litty Funeral Directors, Brookings Chapel.
Andrew Allan Snider
Memorial services for Andrew Allan Snider, 14, Brookings, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Litty's Funeral Directors, Brookings Chapel.
Mr. Snider was born Nov. 15, 1984, in Aberdeen, Wash., and died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, in Smith River, Calif.
He was a freshman at Brookings-Harbor High School. He worked during the summer on the construction of the Salmon Run Golf and Wilderness Preserve.
Mr. Snider will be loved and missed, according to his family.
Survivors include his mother, Dixie Snider; his father, Harley Snider; sisters, Michelle, Aryauna and Hannah Snider; one brother, John Snider; and a niece, Jennifer Snider; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Joseph G. Planeto
Joseph G. Planeto, 84, died Sunday, Oct, 24, 1999, at his home in Agness.
Mr. Planeto was born March 20, 1915, in East Chicago, Ind., to John Planeto and Ann Mestaesyck Planeto.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years in World War II, with the 2006 Ordnance Co. In 1945, he represented the Air Force in the United Kingdom Tennis Championships at Bournemouth, making it to the semi-finals where he was defeated by Tom Falkenlurg, the Hollywood tennis ace.
Mr. Planeto lived in California for 20 years, working as an interior finisher for Local 2 in the San Francisco area.
He married
Helen Miller Nelson in 1966 in California, and the couple moved to Oregon in 1967.
Mr. Planeto enjoyed fishing and faceting gem stones, and loved living in Agness, according to his family.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Planeto of Agness; a brother, Edward Planeto of Florida; step-daughters, Elizabeth Boyd of Portland and Katherine Wilson of Oak Hill, Va.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
At his request, no formal services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Scantlin's Gold Beach Mortuary and Chapel.
Fredrick D. Hicks
Funeral services for Fredrick D. Hicks, 93, Brookings, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Scantlin's Brookings Mortuary and Chapel, 2 Ross Rd., Brookings.
Pastor Jerry Brickley will officiate. Interment will be a W. J. Ward Memorial cemetery in Brookings.
Mr. Hicks was born March 31, 1906, in Olive Hill, Ky., to George and Martha Hicks. He died Oct. 23, 1999 at a Brookings care facility.
He was educated in Columbus, Ohio, and married
Laura Moore on Aug. 1, 1941.
In 1946, they moved to Southern California, and Mr. Hicks worked in the lumber industry for Hoyt Lumber Co. until his retirement.
In 1989, the couple moved to the Brookings area.
Mr. Hicks was a member of the Faith Tabernacle Assembly of God in Smith River, Calif. He enjoyed reading The Bible and was an evangelist.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Hicks of Brookings; a son, Fred Hicks and his wife Shirley of Brookings. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and six sisters.
Billy George Howard
A memorial service for Billy George Howard will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at the Brookings-Harbor Christian Church with Wayne Osborne, interim pastor, officiating.
Mr. Howard, who was born July 10, 1920 in Jacksonville, died Oct. 23, 1999.
He lived a full and interesting life, mostly in the Rogue River Valley, family members said.
From the age of 18 months, through his teen years, he spent summers with his parents, George and Mildred Howard, during the building of the Diamond Lake Resort.
At age 22, he guided many fishermen over the lake, including such celebrities as Andy Divine and President Herbert Hoover. He was considered a "great guide" and was admired for his skills as a fly fisherman, family members said.
Farming was his main occupation. Fishing and hunting occupied his spare time.

Helen Briley Howard and they moved to the Diamond L Ranch in Eagle Point. From the start they went without many modern conveniences, such as electricity. Together they built their ranch house and the first enclosed arena in Jackson County. They also raised appaloosa horses.
In 1976 they moved to Brookings where they have continued to reside. Mr. Howard enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and making unique furniture from horse shoes, rasps and iron. An inventive man, he was also a wonderful father and husband, his family said.
His parents preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Helen, and three children, Buz and Mitch Howard, Jaci and Ray Stephens and Glenda Howard; a stepson, Melvin and Sherry Porter; 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.
Litty Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
