D. "Clay" Gangnes
D. "Clay" Gangnes, 58, of Central Point, died Saturday, July 12, 2003 in Central Point. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2003 at the First Church of the Nazarene. Pastors Kevin Gowland and Charlie Marsolini officiated. Interment is at Scenic Hills, Ashland.
Mr. Gangnes was born Oct. 12, 1944, in Fargo, N.D. to Ludvig and Myrtle Gangnes. On Aug. 28, 1966, he married Donna Blumhardt, who survives, in Kulm, N.D.
He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1972 from Phoenix, Ariz. He worked in general contracting, manufacturing, residential building and with trolleys. Mr. Gangnes served in the national Guard.
He belonged to the Central Point First Church of the Nazarene, where he led Bible study and prayer groups. He was also a member of Africa West partners, which supports missions in French-speaking Africa; Open Hands Open Heart, which supports missions in Third World countries, and the Work Witness Group, which supports mission work in construction.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Gangnes of Central Point; one son, Kawika Joe of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Michele Surgeon and Marti Hill of Central Point; his brother, Larry Gangnes or Argusville, N.D.; his sister, Linda Cooley of Ashland, and 11 grandchildren.

Rose I. Storey
The memorial service for Rose Irene Storey will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003 at Grace Lutheran Church, Ashland. Private entombment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery Resthaven Mausoleum, Ashland.

Mrs. Storey, 80, of Ashland, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at the Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland. She was born Nov. 6, 1922 at Alexis, Ill., the daughter of Elmer Russell and Grace Marie Pattison.
Mrs. Storey graduated from Aldedo High School in Aldedo, Ill. in 1940, then attended Monmouth College and the University of Illinois, graduating from the University of Illinois. During World War II she was trained in physical therapy at the Mayo Clinic. She earned a master's degree in home economics-food and nutrition, from San Diego State University in 1972.
In 1946 she moved to California where she met James William Storey. They were married June 21, 1948 in Seaton, Ill. Mr. Storey preceded her in death in 2000.
Mr. and Mrs. Storey moved to Ashland in 1982. They were members of Grace Lutheran Church, Ashland.
Survivors include two sons, Mark L. Storey of Guadalajara, Mexico, and Robert R. Storey of Pasadena, Calif.; and a daughter, Kristina L. Storey of Ashland. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Stephen and Donald Pattison.

Juan Schwendener
The graveside service for Juan Schwendener will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland, with Pastor Don Baldrica of the First Baptist Church of Ashland officiating.
Mr. Schwendener, 93, of Ashland died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at his home.

Born June 3, 1910, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, he attended schools in Switzerland, where he completed his grammar and secondary education.
He attended business college in Geneva, Switzerland and the Royal Agriculture College in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England.
Mr. Schwendener was chief of forests with the Guatemalan Minister of Agriculture where he worked with native agriculture graduates teaching forestry with his focus on water conservation.
To patrol forest land, he learned to fly, which became a lifelong interest.
Mr. Schwendener came to the U.S. in 1947 and attended the School of Forestry at Oregon State College, later purchasing a 100-acre tree farm and one-man sawmill in Camas Valley.
He married the former Mildred Hickman, who survives, on July 14, 1951, in Glide.
In the fall of 1956, he enrolled in the teaching program at what was then Southern Oregon State College in Ashland, receiving his degree in 1960.
He taught French and Spanish at Ashland Junior High School before his retirement in 1974.
Following retirement, the Schwendeners served four months with the Andes Evangelican Mission, teaching children in Bolivia.
They enjoyed RV traveling for many years, spending winters in California, Arizona and Nevada.
Survivors include three sons, John C. of Medford, Richard of Ashland, and Alan E. of Long Beach, Calif.; one brother, Eugene of Guatemala; one sister, Edith Gibson of Guatemala; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one sister.

Alice Elizabeth Briery
A funeral service for Alice Elizabeth Briery will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2003 at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. A visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003 and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the Hill Dunn Cemetery, Ashland.
Mrs. Briery, 84, of Pacifica, Calif., formerly of Ashland, died Monday, July 21, 2003 at her home. She was born March 8, 1919 at Pueblo, Colo., the daughter of Margaret and Jesse Grever.
On Sept. 18, 1935 at Eads, Colo. she married John Henry Briery II who preceded her in death in 1977. In 1962 she moved from Santa Cruz, Calif. to Ashland. She worked at Rogue Valley Packing for years and for several years worked as a beautician in Talent. In October of 1987 she moved to Pacifica.
Mrs. Briery was an avid square dancer and a member of the Christian Church of Ashland. She was lovingly known as "Aunt Toots" by her many nieces and nephews.
Survivors include one son, John Henry Briery III of Pacifica; one daughter, Sandra Wells of Ashland; five brothers, Charlie Grever of Santa Cruz, Zane Grever of Lodi, Calif., John Grever of Middleton, Idaho, Douglas Grever of Caldwell, Idaho, and Bruce Grever of Middleton; three sisters, Luda Latham of Middleton, Peggy Breuner of Caldwell, and Barbara Bale of Caldwell; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers.

Bob L. "Robert" Jones
The memorial celebration for Bob L. "Robert" Jones will be held Aug. 9, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church (also called the Little Brown Church), 717 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland.
Mr. Jones, 74, of Ashland, died July 23, 2003 at his home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, Medford.
