Adrienne Gussie Denny

Adrienne Gussie Denny, 85, died Oct. 3, 1999, of natural causes in Klamath Falls.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today (Oct. 6) in O'Hair & Riggs Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Duane Bodtker will officiate. Cremation was by Klamath Cremation Service.

Mrs. Denny was born Jan. 28, 1914, in Fort Klamath to William and Edna (Page) Zumbrun. She was raised in Fort Klamath until moving in her teen years to Medford to become a nanny for a family there. She attended Azalea Catholic Academy.

In the late 1920s, she moved to Brookings, where she lived until marrying John Palmer and moving to Chicago. They were married for 25 years before their marriage ended in divorce.

She then moved to Klamath Falls and did housekeeping work, initially for families and later for five years at Merle West Medical Center.

Mrs. Denny joined the Lonely Hearts Club and began corresponding with Edmond Denny, who worked for the Forest Service in Libby, Mont. They were married on April 1, 1967, in Klamath Falls.

They lived in Libby until retiring, then moved back to Klamath Falls for a few years, but later returned to Libby. He preceded her in death after 24 years of marriage and she came back to Klamath Falls.

Mrs. Denny enjoyed ballroom dancing and liked going to the Eagles Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars to dance. She also liked to travel and do embroidery and flower gardening.

Among her other interests were canning fruits and vegetables and making jelly. Her greatest enjoyment, however, was caring for her children and family gatherings, family members said.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Alma and Dick Wimmer and Lana and Brant Weaver of Klamath Falls; sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Bonnie Palmer of Los Angeles and John and Marietta Palmer of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Lenore Zumbrun of Klamath Falls; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, a son, Tom Palmer, and a sister, Clarise Orth. Memorial donations may be made to Linkville House, 2437 Kane St., Klamath Falls, OR 97603.

Jack Sarin

Jack Sarin, 43, died Oct. 1, 1999, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City after he had a heart attack at his Brookings home while he was preparing to go evening sport fishing.

Mr. Sarin was born June 15, 1956, in San Francisco. He was raised and educated in the Marin County area of California, where he was a welder of specialty cars for the movies.

He grew up on boats, having crewed on several voyages during the Pan-Am Yacht race to Hawaii. He grandfather's yacht designs are still being constructed.

He joined the U.S. Coast Guard March 10, 1975, and served on the icebreaker Westwind on the Great Lakes as a boatswain's mate.

During his military service his hip was crushed between two vessels after being trapped in an ice crevice for 18 hours. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 20, 1978 with a service-connected disability. He had undergone hip replacement surgery in June 1999.

During his service career, he was publicly recognized for numerous rescues at sea as a master helmsman during severe storms.

He was a 13-year resident of Brookings, where he was owner of Happy Jack's Fish Market, and a welder on numerous projects, including Twin City Dry Cleaners.

He married Angelina Handley Nov. 28, 1992 in Brookings at the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

His family said that Mr. Sarin was a loving person and that he knew how to be a friend, the kind that would give the shirt off his back. His hobbies included boating, fishing, cooking, and raising golden retrievers.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Genevieve (Coen) Sarin; and his father, Jack Sarin. Survivors include his wife, Angelina Sarin, of Brookings; a sister, Tami Marie Osterhoudt, San Rafael, Calif.; uncles, Louis Sciarini, Long Island, N.Y., Charles Sciarini, Franklin Square, N.Y.; aunts, Dorothy Nugent, Novato, Calif., Mary Carr, Whitehouse Station, N.J., Terry Foote, Bay Shore, N.Y., and Mary Ann O'Conner, Waldwick, N.J.; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Carolyn and Randall Handley, Lubbock, Texas; brothers-in-law, Ray Handley, Lubbock, Texas, and Sgt. Tim Handley and his wife, Tina, Kialua, Hawaii; and niece and nephews, Tia J. Handley, R.R. Handley II, and Craig Grosso of Kilua, Hawaii.

A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 102 Park Ave., with Shelly Hauser officiating.

There will also be a Roman Catholic mass at 6 p.m. Oct. 30 at Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 820 Old County Road, Brookings.

The U.S. Coast Guard will conduct a burial at sea on Friday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Scantlin's Brookings Mortuary and Chapel.

Dorthea Lee Fenton

Dorthea Lee Fenton, 67, died Sept. 30, 1999 at Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach.

Ms. Fenton was born in Tulsa, Okla., Feb. 22, 1932.

She owned a veterans' care facility and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Meriden, Kan.

She enjoyed many activities including knitting, crocheting and, especially enjoyed sharing these hobbies with her friends, family members said.

Ms. Fenton lived with her family in several places before relocating to Brookings for retirement.

Survivors include her son, Dennis White of Arizona; daughters, Kathy White of Kansas and Susan White of Ariz.; God-daughter, Terrie Barrows of Kingston, Wash.; a brother, David McKee, of Meriden, Kan.; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons.

At her request no formal services will be conducted. Arrangements are under the direction of Scantlin's Gold Beach Mortuary Chapel.

Corilda Grover

A memorial service for Corilda Grover, 83, Brookings, will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25 at Brookings Presbyterian Church, 540 Pacific Ave.

She was born Nov. 21, 1915, in Harrisburg and died Oct. 16, 1999.

She was married to Kendall Grover on Oct. 8, 1949, and the couple moved to Brookings in 1950. Mrs. Grover retired from teaching at Upper Chetco School 10 years ago.

Mrs. Grover was a member of the parent-teacher association at the local and state levels. She was a 4-H leader for 15 years, and taught Sunday School at the Brookings Presbyterian Church. She also belonged to the Brookings Gem and Mineral Club and the Azalea Quilters Guild.

Survivors include her husband, Kendall, of Brookings; three daughters, Corilda R. Grover of Philadelphia, Penn., Genni Arledge of Columbia, S.C., and Shawna Gavin of Portland; and her grandchildren, Richard Arledge of Jacksonville, Fla., and Michael, Dereck, Lee Aaron and Jill Gavin, all of Portland. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Blanche V. Wellock.

The family suggests memorial gifts to George Fox University Scholarship Fund, 414 N. Meridian, Newberg, OR 97132.

Arrangements are under the direction of Litty Funeral Directors, Brookings.

Betty Jean Garcia

Services for Betty Jean Garcia, 77, Brookings, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21 at Scantlin's Brookings Mortuary Chapel, 2 Ross Road, Brookings.

Mrs. Garcia was born April 19, 1922, in Illinois, and died Oct. 17, 1999, in Crescent City.

She was raised and educated in the San Francisco area, and later married John J. Garcia on April 5, 1941, in Reno, Nev. The couple moved to Sonoma, Calif., where they owned and operated Sonoma Valley Disposal.

In Sonoma, she was a member of Women of the Moose and on the Sonoma election board.

The couple moved to Brookings in April 1993.

Mrs. Garcia enjoyed raising her family, bowling, fishing, crocheting and reading.

Survivors include her husband, John J. Garcia of Brookings; sons, John M. Garcia, and his wife Margaret, of Brookings, James A. Garcia of Sonoma, and Stephen Garcia of Crescent City; daughters, Sharon Cobleigh of Brookings, Judy Mellus, and her husband Bruce, of Somes Bar, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Jeanne Schmidt of Lumas, Calif.; nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Garcia was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ethel Schmidt, and a brother, John H. Schmidt of Lumas.

Interment at Ward Memorial cemetery will follow the services. Arrangements are under the direction of Scantlin's Brookings Mortuary and Chapel.
