Ann Ramp
About 70 people gathered in the Brookings-Harbor Elks Lodge Tuesday to remember Ann Ramp, a community activist who died at the age of 86 on Sept. 17, 1999.
Joyce Reynolds, a close friend who organized the observance, was the master of ceremonies. She introduced 12 speakers who gave different perspectives on Mrs. Ramp, who spent a lifetime in moderate Republican activities and government affairs.
Their reflections brought laughter from the audience, especially Mrs. Ramp's voice. She used it to make a point.
Sheriff Kent Owens best described Mrs. Ramp's voice, and her practice of stopping when she was telling something to ask: "Did you hear me?''
Owens said he didn't always know what she was saying at the time, but the message came through.
There was agreement that she was an unselfish woman who was always trying to do something to make the community a better place to live. Her positive contributions were especially noted by Les Cohen, chamber executive director.
Jim Welter, the port fish adviser, said the fishing industry has lost a good friend.
Lucie La BontŽ, a long-time friend, said Mrs. Ramp emphasized the importance of working together to achieve goals. That included the work in the League of Women Voters, and the successful opposition to offshore oil drilling.
She said "we" also discouraged the government from listing two species of fish as endangered.
Russ Crabtree, executive director of the Port of Brookings Harbor, described Mrs. Ramp as a friend who will be greatly missed. The emotion of the occasion showed in his voice.
Walt Schroeder, a former state representative, and county historian, told about obtaining Mrs. Ramp's counsel when he was running for office.
Other speakers were Linda Brown, Ann Younger, Maggie Graham, who told about Mrs. Ramp's desire to win at bridge; John Menaugh, head of Sutter Coast Hospital, which she helped to found.
