William Henry Weaver
William Henry Weaver, 91, of Gold Beach died at Curry General Hospital Jan. 1, 2000.
He was born Sept. 25, 1908 in Seattle. He was raised and educated in the Seattle area.
Mr. Weaver married
Bertha M. Saulque in North Bend, Wash., Aug. 7, 1961.
He was a member of the Teamsters Union in Seattle and enjoyed visiting friends at the Gold Beach Senior Center.
Mr. Weaver worked as a truck mechanic until his retirement.
He is survived by a nephew from Texas and two nieces, Vida Petersen of Lacey, Wash., and Mary Bjornstan of Rogue River.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha M. Weaver, his parents and three brothers.
Arrangements are under the direction of Scantlin's Gold Beach Mortuary Chapel.
Elizabeth Nelson
Memorial services for Elizabeth Nelson, 65, Brookings, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Port Orford Masonic Lodge, conducted by the Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Nelson was born June 2, 1934, in California and died Dec. 25, 1999, in Georgia.
She and her husband, Ted Nelson, were married
for 35 years. They retired to Brookings in 1988 from California. Mrs. Nelson was active in Masonic organizations.
Survivors include her husband, Alvin Theodore "Ted" Nelson Jr., Brookings; a son, Alvin Theodore "Ted" Nelson III, Pittsburgh, Calif.; a daughter, Lorrie Heisch, of Cumming, Ga.; her brother, Carlo Besio of Portola Valley, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
A daughter, Mary Harding, preceded her in death.
The family suggests donations to the Shriner's Hospital in Portland.
Arrangements are under the direction of Scantlin's Funeral Home.
Donald Lee Isbell
Donald Lee Isbell, 74, of Brookings died in Crescent City Jan. 1, 2000.
Surviving are his wife Mary Isbell of Brookings and children, Gary Isbell and Tracy Coaper of Shawnee, Okla.; Suzanne Yarbrough of Medford; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, four stepchildren, 11 stepgrandchildren and six great-stepgranchildren.
At the deceased's request, there will be no service.
Helen Anderson
Helen Anderson, 82, died at her home Dec. 31, 1999.
Surviving are five children, William Anderson and James Anderson of Springfield; Judith Anderson of Brookings; Jane Lant of Brookings; Michael Anderson of Veneta.
Also surviving are her sisters, Margaret Bohlinger, Mary Beck, Julia Karis and Agnes Wood all of Winona, Minn.; Clara Heinske of Garner, N.C.; brother, Andy Kokoft of Menominee, Mich.; nieces, Mary Jo Fitzgerald, Beth Wood, Mary Kay Foust all of Minnesota; and Rosemary Fabian of Mesa, Ariz.
A memorial Mass is scheduled at Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 820 Old County Road, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m.
The family requests no flowers as internment will be at a later date. The family invites everyone to join them after mass at the parish hall next to the church.
Arrangements were under the direction of Litty Funeral Directors in Brookings.
Alice Loretta Lewis
Alice Loretta Lewis, 91, died Jan. 6, 2000, at a nursing home in Brookings.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Catherine L. Wilson of Brookings; grandsons, Robin and Ricky Wilson of Crescent City and Corey Wilson of Placerville; granddaughters, Melisa L. Durhoff of Citrus Heights, Calif. and Kim S. Nathan of Fair Oaks, Calif.; great-granddaughters, Catherine J. Spencer, Christina J. Nix and Wendy A. Nathan of Fair Oaks; and Kristine and Crystal Nathan of Citrus Heights, Calif.
Arrangements are under direction of Litty Funeral Directors, Brookings Chapel.
Frederic Albion Blanchard
Frederic Albion Blanchard, 73, died Jan. 2, 2000.
Mr. Blanchard was born on May 25, 1926 in Burbank, Calif. He lived in Brookings for 18 years and enjoyed boating, fishing, gardening, printing recipes on his computer, barbecues and being with his family.
He was a veteran and had interests in mining and chemistry. He was a retired ironworker.
Survivors include his brother, Richard Blanchard of North Hollywood, Calif; son, Steven J. Blanchard of Brookings; daughters, Kim Banfield and Debi Banfield of Brookings; and Cara Nelson of Michigan. Also surviving are five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Preceding him in death were sons Bobby and Rolfe Blanchard and wife D. Carol Blanchard.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date with burial of his ashes at sea. Arrangements are under the direction of Scantlin's Brookings Mortuary Chapel.
Raveta Treasure (Lindholm) Payne
Raveta Treasure (Lindholm) Payne, 77, died Sept. 5, 1999, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, of cancer.
Mrs. Payne was born Nov. 10, 1921, and lived in Brookings for 17 1/2 years, along with her husband, Charles J. Payne. She left Brookings 18 months ago to live with her daughter.
While in Brookings, Mrs. Payne was a member of a local artists' association, and both the Paynes were active in the Shrine organization.
Mr. Payne recently preceded her in death. Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Sharon Burke and Peter Belisle, and Roberta and Chester Edge; god-daughter, Diana Cowan; stepdaughters, Joan Mannix and Nancy Geer; grandchildren, Meghan Burke, Ali Burke, Mark Mannix, Carolyn Kantz and Melissa Juliano; and great-grandchildren, Clair Kantz and Connor Juliano.
Interment will be at Westminster Memorial Park, Westminster, Calif. Arrangements were handled by James Reid Funeral Home, Kingston, Ontario.
Nellie I. Puter
Nellie I. Puter, the daughter of Oregon pioneers, and a nearly life-long resident of Oregon, died Sept. 23 at her Winchuck home.
She would have been 100 years old on Oct. 30. Mrs. Puter was born in 1899.
She first came to Brookings in 1910. Her father was engaged by Robert Brookings as a builder. His work included the Central Building, the old mess hall, the bank building, much work on the mill and many other buildings.
Her uncle was engaged in the construction of the Chetco Inn.
Her family home was the first frame house constructed on the Brookings town site. Before that, it was mill shacks only.
In later years, she served as special duty nurse for Dr. Cartwright of Gold Beach. During World War II she worked as emergency nurse for the Bermite Corp. in Los Angeles.
She is survived by her son, W.H. (Bill) Cochran of Brookings; grandson Louis Cochran and wife Ellen of Santa Rosa, Calif.; grandson William L. Cochran and wife Linda and great granddaughter Keri of Angwin, Calif.; grandson Paul Cochran and wife Laurie of Chico, Calif.; great-grandsons William Troy Cochran, Berien Springs, Mich., Daniel Cochran, Loma Linda, Calif., Bryan Cochran, San Mateo, Calif., and Steven Cochran, Collegedale, Tenn.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Floyd T. Puter, and elder son, Louis Cochran.
At her request there will be private graveside services with interment in the family plot at Gold Beach.
Litty Funeral Home in Brookings is in charge of arrangements. Viewing will be today (Sept. 25) at Litty's until 1 p.m.
