Wayne Clinton Hope
GOLD BEACH - A memorial service for Wayne Clinton Hope, 60, will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Gold Beach, with Rev. Tim Brueckner officiating.
Mr. Hope was born Oct. 9, 1939, in Fort Smith, Ark., and died at home on Sept. 7, 1999.
He is the son of Clint and Idd Kelly Hope. The family moved to San Francisco in 1944, and to Aloha in 1946. After completing his schooling, Mr. Hope owned a horse and mule pack train, taking campers into the Olympic National Forest in Washington. Some of his more notable clients included Bobby and Ethel Kennedy and their family.
In 1965, Mr. Hope joined the Washington County Sheriff's Department as a patrol deputy, and worked there until joining the Curry County Sheriff's Department in 1978. He rose to the rank of lieutenant in 1980, and was head of the jail until his retirement in May 1991.
Mr. Hope was a multi-talented man who excelled in art, including oil painting, ink sketches and wood carving. At 16, he was the youngest person ever accepted into the Oregon Society of Artists. He was also a talented musician who played guitar and sang.
In addition, he enjoyed sailing his own boat on the Columbia River, using his computer for graphic designs and helping others learn computer skills.
Mr. Hope will be remembered for his good humor, quick wit, kindness and caring for others, according to his family.
Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Albert Haas of Bay City; his daughter Kelly and stepson Todd Hope of Washington; three aunts; one uncle; numerous cousins; and his best friends, Rolland and Jennifer Niles, and Karen Baker, all of Gold Beach.
Arrangements are under the direction of Litty Funeral Home.
Harry G. Johns
The ashes of Harry G. Johns, 76, of Brookings, who died New Year's Day, will be scattered at sea today (Jan. 8) by a U.S. Coast Guard Chetco River Station boat.
Mr. Johns died at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. Inurement was by Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford. No services will be held.
Johns was born Dec. 30, 1924, in Tacoma, Wash.
In 1941 he was the National Junior Archery Champion and is in the Archery Hall of Fame.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He married
Frances R. Daems July 11, 1957, in Reno, Nev.
Mr. Johns, and his wife, Brookings City Councilor Frances Johns, moved to Brookings seven years ago from Stockton, Calif.
Mr. Johns had worked for Lockheed Aircraft in Sunnyvale, Calif., for 28 years. He retired as a senior computer operator.
In Brookings, he became active in Volunteers In Police Service, becoming director of the Brookings unit. He retired from Volunteers in Police Service in November, 1998, because of health reasons.
He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks since 1945, and a member of the Brookings Elks Lodge.
He was also a longtime San Francisco 49ers fan.
He is survived by his wife of Brookings; two daughters, Paula Johns Fellman, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Linda L. Johns, San Jose, Calif.; one son, Frank E. Sisky, Escalon, Calif., and one grand-daughter, Brandy Johns, San Jose.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Bud Johns.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Brookings Elks Scholarship Fund, BPOE Lodge 1934, Brookings.
Harold Gene Hale
Harold Gene Hale, 74, Harbor, died Dec. 29, 1999, at his residence.
Mr. Hale was born in Muskogee, Okla., on May 8, 1925, to William Claude Hale and Maggie Viola (Hensley) Hale.
He was raised in Muskogee to the age of 17 and was educated in Muskogee, Oktah and Refton and North Hollywood.
He served in World War II as a seaman first class. While serving he crossed the equator aboard the SS George Ross Oct. 23, 1943, and received honors for the Ancient Order of the Deep.
Mr. Hale married
Margaret (Brees) Hale Nov. 2, 1946, in Southern California.
Mr. Hale's hobbies included photography, beachcombing and camping.
He also enjoyed feeding sea gulls, hunting, fishing and taking his wife to the Oregon and northern California coast.
Mr. Hale was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Yreka, Calif.
Survivors include sons, Douglas Hale of San Jose and Scott Hale of Yreka; daughters, Tobie McCulley of Crescent City and Linda Maggard of Coos Bay; brothers, Jack Hale of Anaheim, Calif. and Ralph Hale of Hot Springs, Ark.; sister Evelyn Arnold of Santa Maria, Calif.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hale was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Margaret Hale; sisters, Claudine Riefer and Wanda Reed, grandmother Emma Rentha Del-Senna who was a Cherokee princess; brother, Jimmy Hale and his parents.
Memorial service will be conducted at a later date for Margaret and Harold Hale.
The family requests remembrances be made to Curry County Home Health and Hospice, Cheney House in Medford, Coos Curry Nutrition Program or the lung or heart foundation.
Arrangements are under the direction of Scantlin's Brookings Mortuary Chapel.
Mary Margaret Landauer
Mary Margaret Landauer, 92, died Dec. 29, 1999, in Portland.
She was born Aug. 13, 1907, in Washington County.
Mrs. Landauer lived most of her life in Portland. She and husband Albert Landauer operated a logging company in Troutdale, Wash., and a lumber mill in Brookings.
Survivors include children, Patricia A. Nelson of The Dalles; LaVerne Landauer of Longview, Wash., and David A. Landauer of Smith River.
Other survivors include seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Charlotte J. Crook, died in 1998.
Mrs. Landauer will be cremated with final interment at Finley Sunset Hills in Portland.
Eugene F. Rigby
Services for Eugene F. Rigby, 88, of Brookings, who died Dec. 27, 1999 at Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach, are scheduled for Jan. 15 at 3:30 p.m. at Brookings Seventh-day Adventist Church; Pastor James Ball officiating.
He was born Aug. 30, 1911 in Hutchinson, Kan.
Mr. Rigby married
Martha "Bobbi" Rigby Sept. 28, 1929. The couple celebrated their 70th anniversary Sept. 28, 1999.
Mr. Rigby's hobbies included woodworking and gardening. He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brookings.
Survivors include his wife, a daughter Shirley Molander of Brookings; son Homer Rigby of Lower Lake, Calif.; sister Lucille Hawk, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren.
Family members suggest contributions be made to the new church building fund, 3ABNTV or Cape Ferrelo Adventist School.
