Daisy L. Hines

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in Morning Star Baptist Church for Daisy L. Hines, who died Jan. 18 of pancreatic cancer at age 52. Ms. Hines was born Dec. 26, 1948, in Hermitage, Ark., and moved to Portland in 1950. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1966. She worked for Tektronix for 27 years, becoming a production specialist. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and served on Portland, district, state and national usher boards.

Survivors include her daughter, Rolanda Vance-Simmons; son, Alejandro Vance; children she helped raise, Deminica Vance and Orlando Vance Jr.; mother, Alice Perkins; sisters, Mattie Thompson, Linda Mayo and Queenetta LeFlore; brothers, Bobby Hines, Eddy Perkins and Glen Perkins; companion, James W. Mangum; and 14 grandchildren.

Interment will be in Rose City cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to any hospice program. Arrangements are by Caldwell's Colonial Chapel.

Shirley Enid Jasper

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in Stehn's Milwaukie Funeral Home for Shirley Enid Jasper, who died Jan. 21 of pneumonia and leukemia at age 74. Mrs. Jasper was born Jan. 11, 1927, in Portland. Her maiden name was Leisy. She graduated from Franklin High School and was a press setter for Omark Industries for 25 years before her retirement in 1989. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. In about 1952, she married Douglas Theodore Jasper; he died in 1987.

Survivors include her sons, James Hampton, Patrick Jasper and Thomas Jasper; daughters, Dana Weaver and Diane Park; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Interment was in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society.

Julia May Jones

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in Wilhelm Funeral Home for Julia May Jones, who died Jan. 17 at age 76. Mrs. Jones was born Aug. 19, 1924, in Ulysses, Neb., and moved to Portland in 1943. Her maiden name was Block. She moved to Gresham in 1946 and was a homemaker and a former member of Gresham Methodist Church. She moved to Pahrump, Nev., in 1999. In 1946, she married Edwin Jones; he died in 1999.

Survivors include her son, Douglas A.; daughter, Nancy G. Wilson; brother, James Block; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery.

Ann Marie Liscia

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home for Ann Marie Liscia, who died Jan. 20 at age 92. Mrs. Liscia was born Nov. 19, 1908, in Troy, Idaho. Her maiden name was Olson. She lived in Pendleton before moving to Portland in the 1940s. She was a homemaker. In the early 1930s, she married Felix Liscia; he died in 1993.

Survivors include her nieces, Ann M. Martino and Irene Weatherford; and nephew, Jim Odberg.

Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. The family suggests remembrances to the Alzheimer's Association.

Mary Louise McBride

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in Immaculate Heart Catholic Church for Mary Louise McBride, who died Jan. 22 at age 85. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, in Zeller Chapel of the Roses. Mrs. McBride was born Dec. 27, 1915, in Washington, D.C. Her maiden name was Sutton. As a young woman, she was a clerical worker for the U.S. government in Washington, D.C. In 1946, she moved to Portland. She was an officer manager for the University of Portland psychology department for a few years and then for the Portland Office of Sanitary Engineering before retiring in 1978. She was a member of the church. In 1940, she married Byron D. McBride; he died in 1991.

Survivors include her daughter, Anne Hughes; sons, John D., Bernard J., Francis X. and Michael W.; brother, Edward Sutton; and 10 grandchildren.

Interment will be in Lone Fir Pioneer cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Women's Inter-Community AIDS Resource. Arrangements are by Zeller Chapel of the Roses.

Lois Elsie Miller

Lois Elsie Miller died Dec. 12, 2000, at age 75. No service will be held. Mrs. Miller was born Jan. 19, 1925, in Yakima. Her maiden name was Beardslee. She moved in the early 1970s to Portland, in 1984 to Grants Pass and returned in July to Portland. She was an office clerk and sales clerk before her retirement in 1978. In 1979, she married Wayne B. Miller.

Survivors include her husband; daughter, Jean M. Bukowsky; sons, Dennis R. Humbird and James D. Humbird; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements were by Autumn Funerals & Cremations.

Vernon M. 'Buzz' Murdoch

Vernon M. "Buzz" Murdoch died Jan. 19, 2001, of cancer at age 72. No service will be held. Mr. Murdoch was born Nov. 5, 1928, in Los Angeles. He moved to Roseburg in 1946, where he was a policeman and, after graduating from the FBI Academy, was Roseburg chief of police in the 1950s and early 1960s. He was a Benton County deputy sheriff in the 1960s and 1970s. Later, he was a salesman and restaurant manager in several towns in Washington and Oregon and then was a manufacturer's representative for Brophy Machine Works in Clackamas until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of the sheriff's posse in Sun City, Ariz., where he lived for four years before moving to Milwaukie in November. In 1996, he married Jacky Seaver.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Vicki Murdoch-Denham and Claudia Ludwig; stepdaughter, Carey Silbaugh; stepson, Eugene Forrer II; former wife, Joan Murdoch; and four grandchildren.

Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.

Harold Dwain Nelson

Harold Dwain Nelson died Jan. 21, 2001, at age 69. A private service was held. Mr. Nelson was born Nov. 14, 1931, in Westhope, N.D., and moved to Portland as a child. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force. After being in the military, he lived in Colorado before returning to the Portland area. In 1970 he moved to Ontario, where he was an accountant for Naca Trucking. He moved to Forest Grove after retiring in 1986. In 1976, he married Elizabeth A. Babcock; she died in 2000.

Survivors include his daughters, Wendy L. Henes and Tina M. Cook; son, Daniel C.; stepsons, Bernie C. Babcock, Brian C. Babcock and Richard B. Babcock; and 12 grandchildren. His son Steven A. died in 1997.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Arrangements are by Westside Cremation.

Dorothy M. O'Brien

Dorothy M. O'Brien died Jan. 17, 2001, at age 71. A memorial service was held. Mrs. O'Brien was born June 19, 1929, in Portland. Her maiden name was Wood. She graduated in 1947 from Milwaukie High School and was a homemaker. In 1948, she married Donald O'Brien.

Survivors include her husband; son, Mike; daughters, Patricia Jarvis, Peggy Planton and Marlene Collier; brother, Chester Wood; and 10 grandchildren. Her daughter Donna M. died in 1955.

Private interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.

George L. Ouellette

George L. Ouellette died Jan. 16, 2001, at age 70. A private service will be held. Mr. Ouellette was born April 13, 1930, in Dickinson, N.D., and moved to the Portland area as a child. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Air Force. He received an MBA from the University of Portland. He worked as a personnel officer at Dammasch Hospital in Wilsonville and retired in 1987. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. In 1959, he married Ruth C. Snook; she died in December.

Survivors include his sons, Pat and Jay; daughter, Dr. Laura Ouellette; and four grandchildren.

Interment was in Portland Memorial Mausoleum. The family suggests remembrances to the Laura Fugere Ouellette Endowed Scholarship Fund of Dickinson State University. Arrangements were by Portland Memorial Funeral Home.

Athol Reed Sayre

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in Hillsboro First Baptist Church for Athol Reed Sayre, who died Jan. 18 at age 85. Mr. Sayre was born Aug. 19, 1915, in Dixie, Idaho. He graduated from the College of Idaho and received a master's degree from the University of Idaho. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a school administrator for the Idaho towns of Wilder, Marsing and Parma, then in Oregon in Adrian, Elgin and Riddle, where he retired in the late 1970s. He moved to Hillsboro in the early 1980s and was a member of the church. In 1939, he married Caroline Henderson.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Steve, Fred, Lewis and Casey; daughter, Leah Bagley; sister, Reba Zaharie; and 15 grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Albertson College of Idaho, 2112 Cleveland Blvd., Caldwell, ID 83605. Arrangements are by Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home.

M. Virginia Stangell

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in St. Mark Presbyterian Church for M. Virginia Stangell, who died Jan. 19 of bone cancer at age 83. Mrs. Stangell was born Nov. 14, 1917, in Portland, where she lived all her life. Her maiden name was Burrows. She graduated from Washington High School and was a homemaker and a member of the church. In 1942, she married Pete Stangell; he died in 1995.

Survivors include her daughters, Sally Vraspir, Nancy Wanamaker and Julie; son, Art; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Hopewell House. Arrangements are by Portland Funeral Alternatives.

Hildegard F. Wanka

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in Bateman-Carroll Funeral Chapel for Hildegard F. Wanka, who died Jan. 23 at age 87. Mrs. Wanka was born March 1, 1913, in Wolta, in what is now the Czech Republic. Her maiden name was Bachtik. She graduated from Charles University in Prague. In 1952, she immigrated to Portland. She worked for St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center for 30 years, retiring as a supervisor of contract billing in 1982. She was also an interpreter for the hospital. She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral. In 1938, she married Frank Wanka; he died in 1940.

Survivors include her daughter, Britta M. Greisen; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Forest Lawn cemetery in Gresham. The family suggests remembrances to the Oregon Alzheimer's Disease Center at Oregon Health Sciences University.
