Timothy Alvin Cross
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in Macy & Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville for Timothy Alvin "Tim" Cross, who died Nov. 17 at age 19. Mr. Cross was born June 16, 1981, in Mountain Home, Idaho. He moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, as an infant and then to Eugene when he was 10. He later lived in Roseburg for five years and then moved to Newberg in 1997, where he graduated from high school in 1999. After graduation, he attended a nursing assistant training program at Oakwood Country Place in McMinnville for eight months. He then returned to Eugene and was a nursing assistant in a foster home.
Survivors include his father, Tim; mother, Debby McCarroll; sisters, Stephanie Bergmann and Shawna Cross; brothers, Bryce Cross, Trace Cross, Dan Oilar and Jeff Oilar; and grandmothers, Betty Cross and Doris McAlister.
Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the National Kidney Foundation of Oregon and Washington.
Kimball 'Skip' Fraser
Kimball "Skip" Fraser died Nov. 11, 2000, at age 100. A private service will be held. Mr. Fraser was born Nov. 8, 1900, in San Francisco. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was an oiler in the merchant marine for about 20 years before retiring in about 1970. He moved to Portland in 1960. His wife, Lucille, died in 1976.
Survivors include his nephew, Don Gross.
Private interment will be in City View cemetery in Salem. Arrangements are by City View Funeral Home in Salem.
Marie Johnson
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in Lincoln Memorial Park for Marie Johnson, who died Nov. 17 at age 97. Mrs. Johnson was born March 23, 1903, in Moravia in Eastern Europe. Her maiden name was Donne. She immigrated to the United States as a child and lived in Wisconsin until 1919, when she moved to southern California. She was a homemaker. She returned to Wisconsin in the early 1930s, then moved back to California in 1948 and settled in Los Angeles. She was a food processor for the California Walnut Growers Association for several years. She moved to Portland in 1967. She married
Joseph Joseph Sr.; he died earlier. In 1934, she married
Roger Johnson; he died in 1982.
Survivors include her sons, Gerald R. Johnson and JosephJoseph Jr.; daughter, Victoria Minor; sisters, Bess Tilley and Rose Powers; brother, Floyd Donne; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. Her son Melvin Joseph died Monday, Nov. 13.
Arrangements are by Mt. Scott Funeral Home.
Florence Mae Kollenburn
Florence Mae Kollenburn died Nov. 8, 2000, at age 80. A funeral was held. Mrs. Kollenburn was born April 19, 1920, in Clark County, S.D. Her maiden name was Grigg. She moved to Portland as a young woman. In 1953, she moved to Santa Monica, Calif., where she was a secretary for Santa Monica Hospital until retiring in 1978. She then lived in Las Vegas and Raleigh, N.C., before returning to Portland four years ago. In 1947, she married
Alfred Kollenburn; he died in 1994.
Survivors include her daughter, Sandra; son, William; sisters, Carley Baker and Louise Swanson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Private interment was in Bunkers Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Las Vegas. The family suggests remembrances to the Oregon Health Sciences Foundation for osteoporosis research. Arrangements were by Caldwell's Colonial Chapel.
Flora 'Jean' Locke
Flora "Jean" Locke died Oct. 28, 2000, of emphysema at age 69. No service will be held. Mrs. Locke was born July 18, 1931, in Nehalem. Her maiden name was Krugen. She moved to Portland as a child. She was a homemaker and also a waitress for several restaurants in Portland for about 20 years. She married
Ronald Locke; he died earlier.
Survivors include her sons, Harold Fall and Jim Fall; daughters, Nancy Allen, Connie Price and Marilyn Brown; sisters, Joyce Bonar and Connie Cox; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the American Lung Association. Arrangements were by Omega Funeral & Cremation Service.
George W. Lyons
George W. Lyons died Nov. 12, 2000, of a stroke at age 69. There will be no service. Mr. Lyons was born Dec. 1, 1930, in Chadron, Neb. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He moved to Portland and owned and operated several bars before becoming a truck driver for Oroweat Bakery for 22 years before his retirement in 1989. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 162. In 1985, he married
Phyllis Yeager.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters; sister, Jean Nevins; and grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes.
Walter R. 'Pete' Ray
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home for Walter R. "Pete" Ray, who died Nov. 16 at age 75. Mr. Ray was born Jan. 28, 1925, in Hamilton, Ohio. He lived in Kentucky until he was a teen-ager, then lived in Ohio briefly before moving to East Port Orchard, Wash., in the early 1940s. He worked in the shipyards at Bremerton, Wash., during World War II. He moved to Portland in the mid-1940s and had various jobs until 1953, when he began working as a hostler for Union Pacific Railroad, where he worked for 41 years until his retirement.
Survivors include his daughter, Brenda Patterson; sisters, Ruth Luce, Oma J. Cavett, Wanda F. Barber, Carrie Johnson and Georgia A. "Joy" Feenstra; brothers, William A. "Bill" and Allen E.; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family suggests remembrances to a hospice of choice.
Don Seymour
Don Seymour died Nov. 10, 2000, at age 86. A service was held. Mr. Seymour was born Dec. 27, 1913, in Los Angeles, where he was raised. He was a licensed private pilot who trained Royal Air Force pilots in Arizona during World War II. He was a real estate salesman in the Los Angeles area for about 40 years until his retirement. He moved to Portland in 1982. In 1941, he married
Estelle VanSooey; she died in 1983. In 1988, he married
Helen Grace.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Bruce and Jeff; and six grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Ducks Unlimited. Arrangements are by Holman's Funeral Service.
Louis Grant Stanfield Jr.
A funeral will be at noon Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in Wilhelm Funeral Home for Louis Grant Stanfield Jr., who died Nov. 18 at age 60. Mr. Stanfield was born Dec. 3, 1939, in Portland. He attended Lincoln High School and served in the U.S. Army. He was a high-speed punch press operator for Blount Inc. for 32 years. In 1962, he married
Bernice Steele; she died in 1995.
Survivors include his daughters, Teresa Tenbusch, Melinda Stanfield and Denice Stanfield; son, Louis G. IV; brothers, Earl Stanfield and Donald Walls; sisters, Lois Johnson and Nancy Kinnersley; and three grandchildren.
Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center at Providence Portland Medical Center.
Bessie Steve
Bessie Steve died Nov. 15 at age 79. A funeral was held. Mrs. Steve was born Dec. 24, 1920, in Los Angeles, where she was raised. Her maiden name was Mark. She moved to Portland in the 1940s and was a homemaker. She married
Frank Steve; he died in 1970.
Survivors include her daughters, Irene Parras, Sonya Guys and Tina Demovek; sons, Leo Steve, Bobby Steve, Johnny Steve and Jimmy Mitchell; sisters, Baby Adams, Mary Adams and Lena Divio; brother, Dewey Mitchell; 19 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Rose City cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Providence Hospice. Arrangements are by Mt. Scott Funeral Home.
Patricia S. Whitmire
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, in Gable & Parkrose Funeral Chapel for Patricia S. "Pat" Whitmire, who died Nov. 18 of cancer at age 60. Mrs. Whitmire was born Oct. 31, 1940, in Boise. Her maiden name was Reynolds. She was raised in Idaho. She graduated from Kuna High School in 1958 and from St. Luke's Nursing School in Boise, where she was a nurse. She moved to Portland in 1962. She was a licensed practical nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital for several years and then was employed at Woodland Park Hospital for several years. She was a licensed practical nurse and coordinator at Northwest Occupational Medicine Center for 21 years. She married
J.L. "Red" Whitmire in 1962.
Survivors include her husband; son, Gloyd; daughter, Shelley; brother, Dale Reynolds; sister, Mary L. "Pete" Nealis; and three grandchildren.
Interment will be in Kuna cemetery in Kuna, Idaho. The family suggests remembrances to the Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center at Providence Portland Medical Center.
Cheryl J. Adams
Cheryl J. Adams died Nov. 6, 2000, of lung cancer at age 67. A private service will be held. Mrs. Adams was born Aug. 3, 1933, in Gresham. Her maiden name was Bjur. She graduated from Gresham Union High School. She was self-employed as a caterer and housekeeper until retiring in 1995, then sold crafts and flowers out of her home.
Survivors include her daughters, Cherie L. Adams, Michelle A. Maddalena and Kimberly S. Adams; son, K.C.; brothers, Ronald Bjur and Robert Bjur; and three grandchildren. Her son Kelly R. died in 1994.
Private interment will be in Forest Lawn cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Providence Portland Hospice. Arrangements were by Omega Funeral & Cremation Service.
Helen Jackson Bestel
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in First Presbyterian Church in downtown Portland for Helen Jackson Bestel, who died Nov. 16 at age 94. Mrs. Bestel was born April 4, 1906, in Marion, Ohio. Her maiden name was Jackson. She moved to Portland as a teen-ager and graduated from Jefferson High School. She studied music at the Cornish Music School in Seattle and was a self-employed music teacher for 65 years in Portland. She taught at Friendly House during the 1940s. She was a member of the church for about 80 years. She was a past officer in the Oregon Music Teachers Association. In 1932, she married
Hans Bestel; he died in 1973.
Survivors include her daughter, Emily G. Cannon; son, Armin H.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Private interment will be in River View cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to her church. Arrangements are by Omega Funeral & Cremation Service.
