Alvord Johnson
Alvord Johnson died Nov. 9, 2000, at age 92. No service will be held. Mr. Johnson was born June 23, 1908, in Boston, and was raised in Portland. He graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in England. He was a union carpenter until retiring in about 1972.
Survivors include his son, Dr. Alvord E.; daughter, Patricia A. Brattus; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements are by Riverview Abbey Funeral Home.
Phillis Beverly Johnson
Phillis Beverly Johnson died Nov. 12, 2000, at age 87. Private services will be held. Mrs. Johnson was born May 26, 1913, in Lincoln, Neb., and lived in Portland most of her life. Her maiden name was Mehuron. She was a high priestess of Our Lady of Eternal Combustion, a sect created by the Portland Beater Car Club. The Beaters twice crowned her queen, and she rode with them in Starlight Parades. Her husband, Delbert, is deceased.
Survivors include a son, a sister and grandchildren. Two other children are deceased.
Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Providence ElderPlace. Arrangements are by Autumn Funerals & Cremations.
David J. Pedro
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, in Sycamore Community Church for David J. Pedro, who died Nov. 24 of kidney and liver disease at age 46. Mr. Pedro was born Nov. 4, 1954, in Portland, where he lived all his life. He graduated from Parkrose High School. He was a retail clerk for a magazine shop in Portland for about 10 years.
Survivors include his mother, Judith Bell; father, Delbert Pedro; and brothers, John, Robert and Jack.
Interment will be in Idlewild cemetery in Hood River. The family suggests remembrances to the American Liver Foundation. Arrangements are by Crown Cremation & Funeral Services.
Elaine Ruth Roberts
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, in Lincoln Willamette Funeral Directors for Elaine Ruth Roberts, who died Nov. 23 at age 85. Mrs. Roberts was born Aug. 10, 1915, in Norfolk, Neb. Her maiden name was Dragoo. She moved to Portland in 1945. She and her husband owned and operated Roberts Grocery in Portland and later the City of Roses Motel and the Bel d'Air Motel. She retired in 1980. She was a member of Sunnyside Community Church. In 1936, she married
Keith H. Roberts; he died in 1981.
Survivors include her son, Roger; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Her son Kenneth W. died in 1992.
Private interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. The family suggests remembrances to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, 8701 Georgia Ave., Suite 500, Silver Spring, MD 20851.
Marvin S.W. Swire
A memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, in Pollin Chapel at Congregation Temple Beth Israel for Marvin S.W. Swire, who died Nov. 24 at age 87. Mr. Swire was born Dec. 2, 1912, in Portland. He graduated from Grant High School and was second violinist in the Portland Junior Symphony. He served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific. He graduated from Northwestern School of Law in Portland in 1934. He was an attorney in private practice for 60 years in Portland until retiring. He was a member of Congregation Temple Beth Israel. He was past chairman of the Board of Bar Examiners of Oregon and a U.S. delegate of the World Jurist Association. In 1948, he married
Gloria Polsky.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Susan Winkler; son, Stephen; sister, Selma Lesman; and three grandchildren.
Private interment will be in Beth Israel Mausoleum. The family suggests remembrances to the stroke center at Oregon Health Sciences University. Arrangements are by Holman's Funeral Service.
Mary Lee Black
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home for Mary Lee Black, who died Nov. 4 at age 86. Mrs. Black was born Dec. 25, 1913, in Keithville, La. Her maiden name was Hart. She attended school in Kansas City, Kan., and moved to Los Angeles in the late 1940s.
She was a coach cleaner for Southern Pacific Railroad for 17 years. She later worked as a dietitian assistant at a hospital in Los Angeles for seven years. She moved to Portland in 1973 and was a home health care provider until her retirement in 1992. She was the founder of the Mary Lee Black Home Care Foundation for the Mentally Ill in Portland. In 1941, she married
Van Black; he died in 1969.
Survivors include her sister, Odell Hart; and brother, Floyd Hart.
Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park.
Herman P. Gassner
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church for Herman P. Gassner, who died Nov. 9 at age 91. A recitation of the rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday before the Mass. Mr. Gassner was born April 26, 1909, in Kingston, and was raised in the Kingston area. He worked at a sawmill in Scotts Mills for a year and farmed in the Yoder area from 1944 until 1975, when he retired and moved to Canby. He was a member of the church. In 1937, he married
Elizabeth Weinacht; she died in 1977.
Survivors include his son, Michael J.; daughters, Loretta Gehrman and Patricia Doebele; brother, Charles; sister, Louise Ditter; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. His daughter Lucille died in infancy in 1939.
Interment will be in Calvary cemetery in Mount Angel. The family suggests remembrances to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Arrangements are by Canby Funeral Chapel.
Martin Peter 'Pat' Hamann
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in Willamette National cemetery for Martin Peter "Pat" Hamann, who died Oct. 28 of congestive heart failure at age 74. Mr. Hamann was born Nov. 28, 1925, in Almont, N.D. He was raised in North Dakota and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific. He moved to Portland in 1947 and was a diesel mechanic for Oregon Portland Cement until his retirement in 1978. In 1947, he married
Laura Paul.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Sandy Anderson; sons, Scott and Stephen; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Sheryl Ann 'Dee Dee' Hemer
A funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, in Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes for Sheryl Ann "Dee Dee" Hemer, who died Nov. 9 at age 53. Miss Hemer was born Oct. 8, 1947, in Portland. She moved to Hood River as a child and attended Mrs. Hunt's special class for children with Down syndrome at May Street School. She moved to Gresham in about 1975.
Survivors include her mother, Cecile L.; sister, Rhonda Smith; half-sister, Mildred Eidenschink; and half-brother, Richard Strickler.
Interment will be in Gibbs cemetery in Sherwood.
Vance Harrell Maples
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, in Columbia View Wesleyan Church for Vance Harrell Maples, who died Nov. 7 at age 70. Mr. Maples was born Oct. 29, 1930, in Elk City, Okla. He moved to Portland as a child and graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School. He attended Oregon State University and served in the U.S. Air Force. He later graduated from the University of Washington School of Engineering. He was an engineer for Boeing in Seattle, specializing in guidance systems, until retiring in 1991. In 1964, he moved to Kent, Wash. After retirement, he was a consultant for several companies, mainly in Florida, until 1995. He was a member of Lakeview Free Methodist Church in Seattle. In 1951, he married
Margaret "Nancy" Neel.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Vance and Neel; daughters, Terrie Maples, Joan Johnstone, Sandra Liddle, Debra Strauss and Brenda Russie; brothers, Charles and Joseph; sisters, Sallie Heer and Frankie Jones; and 13 grandchildren.
Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. The family suggests remembrances to the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements are by Marlatt Funeral Home in Kent.
Francis T. Moon
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in Bethel Congregational Church in Beaverton for Francis T. Moon, who died Nov. 8 of complications from a fall at age 93. Mr. Moon was born July 1, 1907, in Eugene, where he was raised. He graduated from the University of Oregon. He moved to Portland in 1934 and was credit manager for the Oregon Journal for 25 years. He then was credit manager for Transport Clearings until his retirement in 1975. He was a state and national officer of the National Office Managers Association. In 1933, he married
Henry-Etta LaMoree; she died in 1985. In 1987, he married
Jean Peel.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Ted and Tom; stepdaughter, Kathi Moss; stepson, Stephen Peel; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the University of Oregon School of Business Administration. Arrangements are by Riverview Abbey Funeral Home.
Harriet Alberding
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in St. Edward Catholic Church in North Plains for Harriet Alberding, who died Nov. 17 at age 53. Mrs. Alberding was born Nov. 27, 1946, in Portland. She graduated from Hillsboro High School and lived in the Hillsboro area all her life. She attended dental assistant school in Portland, and for 20 years she was a dental assistant for several dental offices in Portland. She was a member of the church.
Survivors include her mother, Marie; father, Carl; brother, Aubrey "Bud"; and sisters, Pat Tate, Rita Aegerter and Elaine DePaepe.
Interment will be in St. Edward Catholic cemetery in North Plains. The family suggests remembrances to orthopedic research at Oregon Health Sciences University. Arrangements are by Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home.
Theon Grace Cline
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in Penttila's Chapel by the Sea in Long Beach, Wash., for Theon Grace Cline, who died Nov. 14 of congestive heart failure at age 89. Mrs. Cline was born Dec. 22, 1910, in St. John, Wash. Her maiden name was Rosenkranz. She moved to Pullman, Wash., as a child and attended high school there. She was a homemaker, moving to Portland in the 1930s. In 1944, she moved to Washington, D.C., until 1946, when she returned to Portland. She lived in Kansas City, Kan., from 1962 until 1965, when she again returned to Portland. She moved to Ocean Park, Wash., in 1990. In 1933, she married
Walter L. Cline.
Survivors include her husband; son, Robert; and two grandchildren.
