Margaret E. Crookham Parr
Margaret E. Crookham Parr died Nov. 3, 2000, of congestive heart failure at age 94. No service will be held. Mrs. Parr was born Feb. 7, 1906, in Winfield, Kan., and moved to Portland as a child. Her maiden name was Crookham. After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1924, she moved to Los Angeles, where she received a degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was a homemaker and a Presbyterian and she volunteered at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Calif. She had lived in Beaverton since 1972 and was a classroom volunteer at Fir Grove Elementary School from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. In 1929, she married
Charles Lindsey Parr; he died in 1984.
Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Parr and Judy Berger; and two grandchildren. Her son, Richard L., died in 1935.
The family suggests remembrances to Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation. Arrangements were by Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home.
Ben B. Staton
A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, in Damascus Community Church for Ben B. Staton, who died Nov. 9 of pneumonia and diabetes at age 64. Mr. Staton was born June 4, 1936, in Little Rock, Ark., and was raised in Portland. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1954 and from Portland State University in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army. He was chief financial officer for R.F.D. Publications for eight years until illness forced his retirement in 1988. He lived in Gresham for the past five years, where he was a member of East Hill Foursquare Church. In 1957, he married
Zada Hassler.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Lynne Smith, Janiece Staton, Susan Carr and Cheryl Arpan; son, Brian; sister, Fran Moreau; half-brother, Norman Ernst; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Portland Adventist Foundation. Arrangements are by Bateman-Carroll Funeral Chapel.
Captola H. Strickland
A funeral will be at noon Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, in Finley's Sunset Hills Mortuary for Captola H. Strickland, who died Nov. 13 at age 93. Mrs. Strickland was born Oct. 6, 1907, in Enoch, Ohio. Her maiden name was Harris. She was a homemaker and lived in Canby for the past 30 years. In 1940, she married
Olen H. Strickland; he died in 1976.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Blunck; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Finley's Sunset Hills Memorial Park.
Anne Harvey Tangvald
Anne Harvey Tangvald died Nov. 1, 2000, of kidney disease at age 58. No service will be held. Mrs. Tangvald was born March 26, 1942, in Astoria. Her maiden name was Harvey. She moved to Portland in 1962, where she was a licensed practical nurse for doctors' offices, most recently for Dr. Gary Prohaska, until her retirement in 1996. In 1965, she married
Harold L. Tangvald; he died in 1998.
Survivors include her sons, Edward L., Jeffrey and Ron; daughter, Gloria Espy; sister, Susan H. Manger; and three grandchildren.
Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Boy Scouts of America Troop 117, 3100 S.E. 168th, #98, Vancouver, WA 98683. Arrangements are by Oregon Cremation Co.
Martha E. Jacobs
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, in Union Point cemetery in Banks for Martha E. Jacobs, who died Nov. 9 at age 88. Mrs. Jacobs was born Sept. 14, 1912, in Elsberry, Mo. Her maiden name was Stewart. She was raised in Hamburg, Ill., and owned and operated a fruit orchard there with her husband. In 1952, she moved to Banks. She was a homemaker who did seasonal work at a fruit-processing cannery in Banks and also did laundry work out of her home. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Forest Grove. In 1929, she married
Howard G. Jacobs; he died in 1971.
Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Weaver; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Her son Howard T. Jacobs died in 1954; her son Kenneth Jacobs died in 1985; and her daughter Janet Copley died in 1997.
The family suggests remembrances to the Tri-City Rural Fire Department in Banks. Arrangements are by Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home.
Helen L. King
A service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, in Willamette National cemetery for Helen L. King, who died Nov. 9 at age 90. Mrs. King was born Jan. 30, 1910, in Estacada, where she was raised. Her maiden name was Peggy. She moved to Portland in the 1940s. She was a food-service worker in the cafeteria at the Montgomery Ward building in Portland. Later, she was a food-service cashier at the Public Service Building in downtown Portland until retiring. In the early 1940s, she married
Laurence King; he died in 1985.
Survivors include her niece, Pat Moe; and nephews, Jim Reid and Arthur Perry.

Garth S. Nelson
Garth S. Nelson died Nov. 5 at age 57. A service was held. Mr. Nelson was born Jan. 21, 1943, in Brigham City, Utah. He was raised in Logan, Utah, and received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Utah State University. He later received funeral service certification from a mortuary school in San Francisco. He moved to Portland in 1970 and was a funeral instructor for Mt. Hood Community College until retiring in 1998. He was a member of the Columbia Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1969, he married
Janet Nelson.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Derek and Brett; daughters, Lisa Robinson, Stacy Serniotti, Kerisa Stratton and Lenee Nelson; brother, Ned; and sister, Patricia Bair.
Interment was in Douglass Pioneer cemetery in Troutdale. The family suggests remembrances to the missionary fund at his church. Arrangements were by Bateman-Carroll Funeral Chapel.
Patricia Jean Parker
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in St. John's Funeral Home for Patricia Jean Parker, who died Nov. 8 of complications from surgery at age 41. A recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13 in the funeral home. Mrs. Parker was born June 30, 1959, in Portland. Her maiden name was Mahoney. She graduated from Jefferson High School. She was a clerical worker for the Oregon state Department of Environmental Quality for several years until becoming a homemaker. She married
Steven D. Parker Sr. in 1989.
Survivors include her husband; sons, Kevin O. and David D.; stepdaughter, Kristie M. Phillips; stepson, Steven D. Parker Jr.; brothers, Michael Mahoney and Jerry Mahoney; sister, Kathleen Staub; and one grandchild.
Interment will be in St. James Acres cemetery in Vancouver, Wash.
Flora D. Parris
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in Christ United Methodist Church in Cedar Mill for Flora D. Parris, who died Nov. 4 at age 94. Mrs. Parris was born Oct. 31, 1906, in Witts Springs, Ark. Her maiden name was Marlow. She moved to Oklahoma as a child and was raised there. She moved to Portland in 1942 and worked for St. Vincent Hospital before becoming assistant supervisor of the hospital laundry for Oregon Health Sciences University until her retirement in 1971. She was a member of the church. In 1925, she married
Seth Parris; he died in 1970.
Survivors include her son, LeRoy; sister, Rosa Mading; and one grandchild. Her son Joel died in 1958.
Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements are by Autumn Funerals & Cremations.
Henry F. Raines
Henry F. Raines died Oct. 30, 2000, at age 76. A service was held. Mr. Raines was born Jan. 9, 1924, in Faulk, Ark. He moved to Bakersfield, Calif., as a child and was raised there. In about 1940, he began working as an oil changer and later as a maintenance mechanic at a company that became Clarke Manufacturing in Bakersfield, retiring in 1979. He moved to Los Angeles in 1960 and was a member of the Teamsters Union there. He moved to Portland in October. In 1970, he married
Hazel Windham.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Debbie Jones, Tammy Walker and Vicki Campbell; sons, Mark, Mike and John; stepdaughters, Atril Russell and Carol Daffern; brothers, James and Neal; sisters, Melvina Metcalf, Dellamae Poindexter and Nettie Farmer; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Interment is in Rose Hills cemetery in Whittier, Calif. Arrangements were by Finley's Sunset Hills Mortuary.
Marshall A. Sherman
Marshall A. Sherman died Nov. 5, 2000, at age 80. A private service was held. Mr. Sherman was born Aug. 21, 1920, in Santa Monica, Calif. He was raised in California and served with the U.S. Marines in the Pacific during World War II. He moved to Portland in 1962 and was sales manager for United Airlines until retiring. He moved to McMinnville in 1997. In 1947, he married
Mabel Andrews.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Kent and Mark; brothers, Albert and Paul; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Private interment is in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery in McMinnville. The family suggests remembrances to the Evergreen-Doe Humane Society, P.O. Box 8, McMinnville, OR 97128. Arrangements were by Macy & Son Funeral Directors.
Tyler Huynh Vu
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in Gethsemini Catholic cemetery for Tyler Huynh Vu, who died Nov. 9 at age 1 month. Tyler was born Oct. 8 in Portland.
Survivors include his father, Paul Vu; and mother, Kristi Huynh.
Arrangements are by Ross Hollywood Chapel.
Martha Waller
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in Calvin Presbyterian Church in Tigard for Martha Waller, who died Nov. 8 at age 84. Mrs. Waller was born Aug. 18, 1916, in Carnegie, Pa. Her maiden name was Botsford. She was raised in Pennsylvania. She was a homemaker. She moved to Tigard from Centralia, Wash., in 1975 and shortly thereafter moved to King City. She was a member of the church. In 1943, she married
Hal Waller; he died in 1991.
Survivors include her daughters, Penny Olson and Nanci Werts; sister, Myra Murphy; and four grandchildren.
