Marian Ulestad
A memorial gathering will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in the home of Keith Ulestad, 7502 N.E. 104th Ave., Vancouver, Wash., for Marian Ulestad, who died Nov. 9 at age 75. Mrs. Ulestad was born Dec. 5, 1924, in New England, N.D. Her maiden name was Gulliksen. She was a homemaker and moved from New England, N.D., to Portland about 20 years ago. She lived in Vancouver for the past six years.
Survivors include her son, Keith; sisters, Margaret Nelson and Eunice Bowman; brother, Allen Gulliksen; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Disposition was by cremation. Arrangements are by Hustad Funeral Home.
Fred 'Dick' Wens
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in Gladstone Christian Church for Fred "Dick" Wens, who died Oct. 29 at age 96. Mr. Wens was born Aug. 25, 1904, in Nebraska. He moved in 1936 to St. Helens and in 1950 to Gresham. He had been an insurance and real estate salesman, as well as a maintenance man and bus driver for Gresham schools. He was an elder in the Christian Church. In 1925, he married
Mabel George; she died in 1976. He married
Lottie Hampton in 1978.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Verlaine Cutsforth; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. His son, Keith, died in 1945.
Private interment will be in Yankton cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to a favorite charity. Arrangements are by Alpine Cremation & Burial Services.
Chester A. Beck
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, in Molalla Funeral Chapel for Chester A. Beck, who died Nov. 11 at age 78. Mr. Beck was born Jan. 28, 1922, in Molalla. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific. He was a timber faller in the Molalla area until retiring. In 1942, he married
Avalon Bjerkvig.
Survivors include his wife; son, Clint; daughter, Lorene Beck-VanOsdol; sister, Anona Robinson; brother, Lester; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Bonney cemetery in Colton. The family suggests remembrances to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Molalla.
Herbert Ervin Berg
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, in Hustad Funeral Home for Herbert Ervin Berg, who died Nov. 12 at age 87. Mr. Berg was born May 29, 1913, in Boon Lake Township, Minn. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe and North Africa. He then moved to Portland, where he was a backtender for Bird & Son Roofing Manufacturing until retiring in 1978. In 1949, he married
Miram Olivera; she died in 1967. He married
Elizabeth White in 1968; she died in 1998.
Survivors include his stepson, Alvin Fowler; stepdaughters, June Zuecher, Patricia O'Connor and Kathleen Rosenquist; sisters, Carol Banker, Lila Matthew and Phyllis Garrett; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Legacy VNA Hospice.
Olaf Brunstad
Olaf Brunstad died Nov. 2, 2000, of congestive heart failure at age 86. A private service will be held. Mr. Brunstad was born Jan. 2, 1914, in Tacoma. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II. He moved in 1967 to Portland. He was a mechanical engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for about 40 years before retiring in 1974. He then moved to Olympia and returned to Portland in 1999. In 1946, he married
Carol Gwyther; she died in January.
Survivors include his daughter, Bonnie Brunstad-Hohnstein; son, Bruce; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
Disposition was by cremation. Arrangements are by Finley's Sunset Hills Mortuary.
Chris Haley
Chris Haley died Nov. 4, 2000, at age 28 from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident. A private memorial gathering was held. Mr. Haley was born April 3, 1972, in Prosser, Wash. He moved to Tigard in 1983 and attended Tigard High School. He recently became a welder for Huntair.
Survivors include his mother, Trish Hall; and sister, Becky Austin.
Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements were by Young's Funeral Home.
Kenneth Henry Hysler
Kenneth Henry Hysler died Nov. 3, 2000, at age 83. No service will be held. Mr. Hysler was born Nov. 29, 1916, in Salem. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He moved to Portland in the early 1950s. He was a switchman for the Portland Terminal Railroad, retiring in 1980. He married
Dorothy Dodge in 1944.
Survivors include his wife; son, Kenneth R.; daughter, Pam K. Harrison; and two grandchildren.
Interment is in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Elks Club. Arrangements are by Heritage Memorial.
Mary Louise Johnson
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov.15, 2000, in Rose City Funeral Home for Mary Louise Johnson, who died Nov. 13 at age 71 apparently of cancer. Mrs. Johnson was born Nov. 6, 1929, in Onion Creek Basin, Wash., and was raised in Spokane. Her maiden name was Domitrovich. She moved in 1963 to Portland and was a certified nursing assistant for Providence Child Center for about 10 years before retiring in 1991. In 1982, she married
Louis "Duke" Johnson Sr.; he died in 1990.
Survivors include her daughters, Linda Venable, Jacquie Venable and Casey Phillips; son, Dan Hobbs; stepdaughter, Lady Clay; stepsons, Louis Jr., Michael, Desi and Chris; sister, Joann Berger, Doris Berg and Violet Boggess; brother, Bob Domit; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society.
Rhoda Lee Lomsky
Rhoda Lee Lomsky died Nov. 7, 2000, of cancer at age 65. A service was held. Mrs. Lomsky was born Sept. 28, 1935, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her maiden name was Klass. She immigrated to Portland as a teen-ager and graduated from Grant High School. She attended the University of California at Berkeley. She moved to Eugene in the early 1960s. She and her husband owned Carpets by Stuart in Eugene for about 25 years until her retirement. In 1957, she married
Stuart Lomsky; he died in 1987.
Survivors include her sons, Craig, Jeff and Mikel; daughter, Dana Schull; brother, Alvin Klass; and six grandchildren.
Private interment was in Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene. The family suggests remembrances to Sacred Heart Hospital Medical Foundation in Eugene. Arrangements are by England's Memorial Chapel in Eugene.
Lee E. McGuire
Lee E. McGuire died Oct. 31, 2000, at age 85. No service will be held. Mrs. McGuire was born Sept. 29, 1915, in Hot Springs, Mont., and was raised in Portland. Her maiden name was Lane. She graduated from Commerce High School. She was a homemaker and lived in Gladstone before moving to Tigard. She married
James McGuire in the 1940s. Survivors include her husband; son, Chet Gilman; sister, Connie Larson; and one grandchild.
Disposition was by cremation. Arrangements are by Young's Funeral Home.
Clarence Oscar Morton
Clarence Oscar Morton died Oct. 31, 2000, of cancer at age 70. A private memorial gathering will be held. Mr. Morton was born Oct. 12, 1930, in Riceville, Tenn. He served in the U.S. Army. He spent most of his life in Chugiak, Alaska, and owned Golden Wheel Amusement until retiring in 1980. He lived in Gladstone for the past 15 years.
Survivors include his sons, Bradford L. and James E.; daughters, Betty E. Lange, Lisa M. Morton, Cathy Morton and Jacqueline Morton; companion, Thana Powell; former wives, Lota L. and Cecile C.; and 10 grandchildren.
Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Autumn Funerals & Cremations.
Thomas Mustola Jr.
Thomas "Tommy" Mustola Jr. died Sept. 20, 2000, of a heart attack at age 78. A service was held. Mr. Mustola was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Clatskanie. He lived in Portland from 1940 to 1943, and worked in the Portland shipyards. Later, he served in the U.S. Navy. He owned the Depot Tavern in Seaview, Wash., from 1960 until his retirement, was a commercial fisherman in Kodiak, Alaska, from 1954 to 1964, and was a charter boat fisherman for Anchorage Charters out of Ilwaco, Wash., for 20 years before his retirement in 1984. He was a member of Apostolic Lutheran Church in Clatskanie. In 1956, he married
Ruth Payne Berglin.
Survivors include his wife; stepdaughter, Susan Sluder; sisters, Joanne G. Jolma, Lillian Boyle and Virginia Hawk; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Interment is in Stewart Creek cemetery in Clatskanie. Arrangements were by Penttila's Chapel by the Sea in Long Beach, Wash.
Brian O'Connor
A service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, in Willamette National cemetery for Brian O'Connor, who died Nov. 9 at age 57. Mr. O'Connor was born July 23, 1943, in Rahway, N.J. He served in the U.S. Army. In 1991, he moved to Vancouver, Wash., where he was a delivery driver for Smokey's Pizza for the past four years.
Survivors include his son, Shaun; and daughter, Colleen.
