Ollie Helen (Hart) Speirs

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 16 at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford for Ollie Helen (Hart) Speirs, 91, died on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 in Medford.

Mrs. Speirs was born on March 6, 1912, in Star, Idaho to Frank and Emma Hart. The youngest of 15 children, her childhood was spent in LeGrand, Ore. and Talent, Ore. She graduated from Talent High School in 1930.

In 1934 she married Verne H. Speirs. The couple made their first home in Klamath Falls, Ore. They returned to Ashland in 1955. A mother and homemaker, Mrs. Speirs was involved in various civic activities and taught Sunday School.

Survivors include a daughter, Janet Speirs-Varnell of Medford; two sons, Verne L. Speirs of Sacramento, Calif. and Lyle Speirs of Bend, Ore.; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Verne H. Speirs in 1986.

Arrangements are under the direction of Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Fred D. Mitchell

The graveside service for Fred D. Mitchell will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2003 at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland. Friends are invited to call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday June 19, 2003 at the Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Mr. Mitchell, 89, of Medford, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at the Medford Rehab and Health Care Center, Medford. He was born May 12, 1914 at Wright City, Okla., the son of Carrie and Dan Mitchell. He was raised in Oklahoma and moved to Oregon in 1941. While in Oregon he lived in Klamath Falls, Ashland, and Medford.

Mr. Mitchell worked as a concrete finisher and worked on area ranches. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Mitchell of Eagle Point, Ore., and Freddy Mitchell of Georgia; his daughter, Vernetta Kirkland of Phoenix, Ore.; two brothers, R.W. Mitchell of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Ray Mitchell of Ashland; 15 grandchildren and numerous great -grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, three brothers, and three sisters.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Laura Jayne Ferguson

Laura Jayne Ferguson, 45, of Talent, died Sunday, June 15, 2003 at a Medford foster home.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

David Bolitho Nicholas

A private memorial service will be held for David Bolitho Nicholas, 62, of Medford who died Tuesday, June 17, 2003.

Memorial contributions may be made to Asante Home Health and Hospice, 2825 East Barnett Rd. Medford, Ore. 97504.

Mr. Nicholas was born April 14, 1941, in Denver, Colo. to Kenneth and Ethel (Wilkins) Nicholas. He moved to Medford in 1975, where he was active in the Medford YMCA and the Rogue Valley Harmonizers Barbershop Singing Group.

Survivors include his father, Kenneth Nicholas of Medford; and brother, William Nicholas of Ashland; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Frederick Wayne Bratten

The memorial service for Frederick Wayne Bratten will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Ashland. Mr. Bratten, 81, of Ashland, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at his home.

He was born June 30, 1921, in Louisville, Ohio, to Wayne and Florence (Ewing) Bratten. He graduated from William McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio, in 1939. In 1942, he married Ruth Darling. They had three children and later divorced.

Mr. Bratten worked as a radio repairman, and for Ohio Bell Telephone Company before joining the U.S. Navy in 1942. As chief radio technician, he taught radar in Navy Radio Technician Schools at Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay and Navy Pier in Chicago until his discharge in 1945. In 1950, he earned a bachelor's degree in physics, with honors, at Case Institute of Technology, now Case Western Reserve University. He received a master's degree in physics from the University of California Berkeley in 1952.

Mr. Bratten worked in the aerospace industry in Southern California for the next 15 years. He last position was as technical director of a team of researchers responsible for the formulation and implementation of plans and programs for the evaluation of ballistic missile systems.

In 1967, he accepted a position as operations research analyst. with the U.S. Forest Service Fire Research Laboratory in Riverside, Calif. He was a pioneer in applying concepts of operations research to fire management problems and constructed computer-based management systems that helped front-line fire managers determine the most efficient use of manpower and equipment, including aircraft, in controlling forest fires. He retired in 1986.

In 1971, he married Mary Schneider, who survives. They moved to Ashland in 1987.

A Unitarian since the 1960s, Mr. Bratten became a member of Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in 1987. He enjoyed writing his own computer programs and developed a computer program to keep track of annual congregational canvass and member's pledges.

He was a member of Sigma Xi, Operations Research Society of America, Federation of American Scientists and Physicians for Social Responsibility.

Mr. Bratten enjoyed reading, listening to music, hiking and gardening.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four daughters, Susan Weaver, Riverside, Calif., Jill Richardson, Los Angeles, Diane Schneider and Catherine Schneider, both Ashland; four sons, Jonathan Bratten, Honolulu, Richard Schneider, Phelan, Calif., Arthur Schneider, Talent and Joseph Schneider, Medford; two sisters, Alice Cole, Sherrodsville, Ohio, and Geraldine Klink, New Braunfels, Texas; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack E. Bratten.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Daniel Daniels

Daniel Daniels, 82, of Ashland, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at his home. The graveside service was held Tuesday at Jacksonville Cemetery. Rabbi Marc Sirinsky officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Emek Shalom, 1800 E. Main St., Ashland, OR 97520 or Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 2600 Siskiyou Blvd., Suite 100, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born March 23, 1921, in Chicago, to Haskell and Sophie Daniels. He attended Northwestern University. On Oct. 26, 1947, in Chicago, he married Beverly, who died in 1992.

Mr. Daniels was a certified public accountant in Chicago. He moved to Ashland in 2000 from Chicago. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed on Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands.

Mr. Daniels was a member of the Illinois C.P.A. Society.

He enjoyed classical music, playing French horn in various symphonic orchestras, reading and traveling.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Shaw Straus, Ashland; a son, Harvey, Chicago; two sisters, Reva Daniels, Chicago, and Sybil Sherwood, Raleigh, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.
