Carolina Rodriguez
Carolina Rodriguez died April 4, 2001, at age 76. Mrs. Rodriguez was born Carolina Hernandez on April 2, 1925, in Wales, Mich. She was a homemaker and moved to Hillsboro in 1996. In 1971, she married
Santos Rodriguez.
Survivors include her husband; sons, Eleno Robles, Gabriel Robles, Richard Robles, Peter Robles, Louie Robles, John Robles, Ruben Robles and Freddy Robles; daughters, Ana Navarro, Mary Martinez, Guadalupe Robles, Teresa Robles-Ellis and Rosemary Reyes; 36 grandchildren; and 16 great-grand children.

Sully Ross
Sully Ross died April 5, 2001, at age 97. Mr. Ross was born March 27, 1904, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He received a degree in civil engineering from Cornell University. He worked for the U.S. Treasury Department from 1936 to 1941. He moved to Portland in 1940 and worked for Willamette Steel during World War II. In 1946, he was a founding partner and owner of Haner, Ross & Sporseen, mostly designing water and sewer systems for small cities. He retired in 1972 but still worked part time. In 1936, he married
Edna Daas.
Survivors include his wife; and three nieces.

Marguerite MacKenzie Schiefelbein died April 6, 2001, at age 72.
Mrs. Schiefelbein was born Marguerite MacKenzie on Oct. 23, 1928, in Albany. She moved to Portland as a child and graduated from Grant High School. She was a bookkeeper for the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System for more than 20 years, retiring in 1983. In the early 1990s, she married
George Schiefelbein.
Survivors include her husband; son, Eric MacKenzie; brother, Robert H. MacKenzie; sister, Betty Jean Littlejohn; and three grandchildren.

Arne Vincent Schmidt
A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Skyline Funeral Home for Arne Vincent Schmidt, who died April 10 at age 70. Mr. Schmidt was born April 4, 1931, in Portland and was raised in Dawson, N.D. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He lived in Billings, Mont., before returning to Portland in 1969, and was a carpenter out of Local 247, retiring in 1993. In 1961, he married
Dora Smith; they divorced.
Survivors include his sons, Arne D. and Gary R.; daughter, Yvonne D.; brothers, Robert and Ellis; sisters, Marilyn Nash, Jeanette Miedinger, Ruth Eichele, Cathy Lang, Geneva Schultz and Evelyn Zimmerman; and two grandchildren.
Interment in Willamette National cemetery.
Frederick A. Schregardus
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Skyline Funeral Home for Frederick A. Schregardus, who died April 10 at age 57. Mr. Schregardus was born June 30, 1943, in Friesland, the Netherlands. He immigrated to Toronto in 1953 and to Portland in 1978. A commercial artist, he owned Quality Signs for the past 23 years. He was a foster parent for 97 children. In 1963, he married
Connie Van Huizen.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Andrew F., Nathaniel, Timothy, Sir Hamilton and Justin; daughters, Sherry A. Stiff, Laura Hooper and Kayla Schregardus; mother, Cornelia; brothers, Henry, William, Edward and Jack; sister, Elizabeth; and six grandchildren.

W. Ross Shepherd
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2001, in Rose City Park United Methodist Church for W. Ross Shepherd, who died March 29 at age 90. Mr. Shepherd was born Aug. 5, 1910, in Herington, Kan. He moved to Portland in 1942 and was an ink maker for Irwin-Hodson for about 25 years, retiring in 1976. He was a 54-year member of the church and usher for 40 years. In 1946, he married
IphaGene Wilkes; she died in 2000.
Survivors include his daughter, Mynra W. Culbertson; sister, Ruth Ham; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Rose Marie Steffan
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes for Rose Marie Steffan, who died April 10 at age 73. Mrs. Steffan was born Rose Sherman on May 18, 1927, in Portland. She graduated from Immaculata Academy. She was a homemaker and in the 1980s was Portland president of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Survivors include her son, Daryl; daughter, Debra Meloy; brothers, Richard Sherman, Harold Sherman, James Sherman, David Sherman and Paul Sherman; sisters, Lucille Powell, Mildred Cook and Beverly Granato; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Gregory H. Stevens
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2001, in Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes for Gregory H. Stevens, who died April 9 at age 51. Mr. Stevens was born June 3, 1949, in Hong Kong and immigrated to Santa Barbara, Calif., as an infant. He was raised throughout the United States. He moved to Portland in 1974. He was an inventory manager for Flir Systems for the past 11 years. About 1970, he married
Lyn D'Eath; they divorced.
Survivors include his sons, Christopher and Phillip; daughter, Sindi Jackson; brothers, James and Michael; sisters, Barbara Hicks and Brigid Stevens; and two grandchildren.Robert Eugene Swift~ Robert Eugene Swift died April 3, 2001, at age 56. Mr. Swift was born Dec. 21, 1944, in Muncie, Ind. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and later in the Oregon National Guard for a total of 23 years. He moved to Hillsboro in 1981 and was a laborer for a petroleum company before retiring in 1998. In 1963, he married
Joyce Ann Ennis.

Claire Marie Tate
Claire Marie Tate died April 10, 2001, at age 70. Mrs. Tate was born Claire Marie Drinnen on Dec. 14, 1930, in Montrose, Colo. She was a homemaker and moved to the Portland area four years ago. She married
Frank Tate in 1955; he died in 1995.
Survivors include her son, Gary; brothers, Art Drinnen and Bob Drinnen; sisters, Hazel McLaughlin and Eunice Brammeier; and four grandchildren. Her son Larry D. Westerman died in 1985.

Mary Jane Van House
Mary Jane Van House died April 6, 2001, at age 79. Mrs. Van House was born Mary Jane Grogan on Sept. 5, 1921, in New York City. She worked for Jantzen and moved to Portland in 1999. In 1944, she married
George Van House.
Survivors include her husband; daughters, Mary P. Van House, Nancy Van House and Teri Cettina; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2001, in Mather-Hodge in Princeton, N.J., for Francois Maurice Jena Vautravers, who died April 8 at age 32.
Mr. Vautravers was born Feb. 24, 1969, in New York City. He graduated from York College in Pennsylvania and moved to Portland in 1995. He was the manager of several bicycle shops and a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. He was a surgical technician before joining Morgan Stanley Dean Witter as a stockbroker. In January he moved to Princeton.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Judith E. Vautravers and Dennis M. Cruz; father and stepmother, Pierre F. and Linda H.; sister, Stephanie; grandmother, Fernande Vautravers; and great-grandparents, Elizabeth Preston and Gardner T. Jefferies.

Thomas Craig West
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Leyden's Funeral Homes Ltd. in Claresholm, Alberta, for Thomas Craig West, who died April 11 at age 52. Mr. West was born Aug. 11, 1948, in Portland. He attended Parkrose High School. He moved to Alberta in 1967, and was a pipefitter and welder for Syncrude Oil Co.. In 1996, he married
Donna Buhler.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Amy and Rebecca; stepdaughter, Beverly Hare; and brothers, Lance and Kenneth.

The Rev. Elmer L. Whiten Jr.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Northwest Baptist Convention in Vancouver, Wash., for the Rev. Elmer L. Whiten Jr., who died April 9 at age 73. The Rev. Whiten was born Sept. 30, 1927, in Stephens County, Ga. He graduated from Mercer University, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Carolina University of Theology. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a pastor in Georgia for 18 years before moving to Portland in 1969. He directed Christian social ministries for Northwest Baptist Convention for 23 years, retiring in 1992.
He was a member of Greater Gresham Baptist Church and for the past seven years its associate pastor of counseling. He was president of the Oregon Council on Alcohol Problems for 10 years, ministered to prison inmates and their families through the International Lifeliners for 29 years, was founder and executive director of Camp Hope Northwest and was on the board of S.A.F.E. Ministries. In 1952, he married
J. Quilla Whitmire.
Survivors include his wife; son, Mark; sister, Doris Brady; and three grandchildren.
