Joe L. Johnson
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, in Morning Star Baptist Church in Portland for Joe L. Johnson, who died Feb. 25 of cancer at age 45. Mr. Johnson was born Oct. 25, 1955, in Portland, where he lived all his life. He graduated from Grant High School, attended Clark College and served in the U.S. Army. He was a maintenance supervisor for Freightliner for the past eight years and was a member of the church.
Survivors include his mother, Beatrice Brown; sister, Vertie Raines; and brother, Sammy.
Interment is in Willamette National cemetery. Arrangements are by Rose City Funeral Home.
Bob Gene Lindsey
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, in Finley's Sunset Hills Mortuary for Bob Gene Lindsey, who died Feb. 26 of multiple strokes at age 69. Mr. Lindsey was born Dec. 10, 1931, in Lubbock, Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy. He moved to Portland in 1949 and was a foreman for Elf Atochem of North America for 31 years, retiring in the early 1990s. In 1956, he married
Melodee Rains.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Merle and Dale; daughter, Melanie Jensen; sister, Norma Hebbs; brother, Winfred; and nine grandchildren.
Interment is in Sunset Hills Memorial Park. The family suggests remembrances to St. Vincent Hospice.
Mike Loupe
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, in Mt. Scott Funeral Home for Mike Loupe, who died Feb. 26 of heart disease at age 47. Mr. Loupe was born Sept. 29, 1953, in Port Arthur, Texas, and was raised in Portland. He attended Roosevelt High School and then served in the U.S. Army. He was a crane operator for Cascade General for about 10 years until illness forced him to retire in January. For the past seven years, he was a Santa Claus at Clackamas Town Center. In 1972, he married
Margie Johnston.
Survivors include his wife; son, Mark; daughter, Marsha; mother and stepfather, Bertha and Bob Burch; sisters, Linda Guadalupe and Sherri Eastmond; brothers, Thomas, Butch, Ray and John Coleman; and two grandchildren.
Interment is in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Freda F. McClendon
Freda F. McClendon died Feb. 23, 2001, at age 80. A private service will be held. Mrs. McClendon was born Jan. 10, 1921, in Mapleton, Kan. Her maiden name was Camp. She moved to Portland in 1940, and worked in the shipyards during World War II. After the war, she worked in the food service industry until retiring in 1983. She was a member of Royal Neighbors of America for many years. In 1941, she married
Ellis J. McClendon.
Survivors include her husband; son, Michael; brother, Larry Camp; sisters, Rose Matteson and Joan Kelly; and two grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements are by Oregon Cremation Co.
Susan P. McMillan
Susan P. McMillan died Feb. 19, 2001, of a brain tumor at age 54. A private gathering will be held. Mrs. McMillan was born Sept. 27, 1946, in Racine, Wis. Her maiden name was Pendell. She moved to Portland in 1964 and was a homemaker and owned Cactus Crafts, a ceramics business. In 1988, she married
Charles M. McMillan.
Survivors include her husband; son, Scot Reuther; stepsons, Mike and Justin; parents, Eugene and Inez Pendell; brother, John Pendell; and sister, Pam Eddy.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Autumn Funerals & Cremations.
Mary Sheila Munly
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 1, 2001, in Mt. St. Joseph Care Center for Mary Sheila Munly, who died Feb. 25 at age 65. Miss Munly was born Sept. 11, 1935, in Portland, where she lived all her life. She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral.
Survivors include her brother, Richard E.; sister-in-law, Joanne; and aunt, May Duffy.
Interment is in Mt. Calvary Catholic cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Mt. St. Joseph Care Center. Arrangements are by Hennessey, Goetsch and McGee Funeral Directors.
Francis L. Perry
A graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, in Rose City cemetery for Francis L. Perry, who died Feb. 26 at age 90. Mr. Perry was born Feb. 8, 1911, in Corvallis and was raised in Portland. He graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School and was an electrician for Union Pacific Railroad for about 35 years, retiring in the mid-1970s. He was a member of Reedwood Friends Church. In 1954, he married
Elizabeth Dick.
Survivors include his wife; brother, Gerald; and nieces.

Mary Jane Pingel
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, in Rose City Funeral Home for Mary Jane Pingel, who died Feb. 25 of cancer at age 61. Mrs. Pingel was born May 19, 1939, in Billings, Mont., and was raised in Portland. Her maiden name was Lowe. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1957 and worked in several administrative positions for U.S. Bank for 18 years, in the Main Branch and Union Ave. Branch, retiring in 1994.
Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Bensene and Christine Mundy; son, John; stepsons, Leonard Jr. and Ken; stepdaughter, Paula; sister Michelle Smith; brothers, Patrick Lowe and Michael Lowe; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
Nathan James Senko
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Vancouver, Wash., for Nathan James Senko, who died Feb. 25 of a brain tumor at age 5. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in the church. Nathan was born Nov. 27, 1995, in Portland. He moved with his family to Vancouver in 1996, where he attended The Little Acorn Preschool.
Survivors include his parents, Christopher and Mindy; sisters, Caitlin and Sarah; brother, Andrew; and grandparents, Bob and Marie Clark and Jim and Pat Senko.
Interment is in Mt. Calvary Catholic cemetery. Arrangements are by Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home in Vancouver.
L. Howard 'Boomer' Smith
A funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, in Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes for L. Howard "Boomer" Smith, who died Feb. 13 of a heart attack at age 43. Mr. Smith was born Nov. 22, 1957, in Tucson, Ariz. He served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War and earned a Purple Heart. He moved to Portland in 1996, and was a heavy equipment operator, most recently for R.D.O. Construction. In 1990, he married
Sandy; she died in 1996.
Survivors include his son, William H.; mother, Florence Barber; sister, Roxanne J. Ballinger; and brothers, Phillip Davis and Leslie Davis.
Interment is in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Smith Memorial Fund at Share House, P.O. Box 1209, Vancouver, WA 98666. Arrangements are by Alpine Cremation and Burial Services.
Elizabeth Ternes
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, in St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Portland for Elizabeth Ternes, who died Feb. 26 at age 92. Mrs. Ternes was born Aug. 9, 1908, in Argentina. Her maiden name was Klein. She immigrated in 1911 to New York City and was raised in North Dakota. She moved in the early 1960s to Portland and was a homemaker and a member of the church. She married
Joseph Ternes in 1926.
Survivors include her daughters, Daisy Peterson, Frances Neibauer, Carol Kuntz, Angie Eckroth, Veronica Bernhardt, Florence Harsche, Rose Lidfors, Irene Huft and Alvina Ternes; sons, Frank and Al; brothers, Ralph Klein and Stanley Klein; 40 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Her son Phil died in 1997; her son Leonard died in 1955.
Interment will be in Gethsemani Catholic cemetery. Arrangements are by Gresham Funeral Chapel.
George W. Vandenberg
A funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2001, in Sandy Funeral Home for George W. Vandenberg, who died Feb. 26 at age 78. Mr. Vandenberg was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Ashland and was raised in Boring. He attended Sandy High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific and survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. He lived in several areas of Washington before returning to Sandy in 1961 and was a heavy equipment operator and mechanic for the U.S. Forest Service at Zigzag for 21 years, retiring in 1982. In 1947, he married
Virginia Hill; they were later divorced. He married
Juanita Fox in 1956; they were divorced. In 1971, he married
Joella Muse; she died in 1987.
Survivors include his daughters, Georgia Mertes, Donna Dobin, Janice Vandenberg, Cindy Bloomfield and Lora Cary; sons, Don and Ray; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Interment is in Cliffside cemetery in Sandy. The family suggests remembrances to the Sandy Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4273.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 1, 2001, in Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg for George Edward Lane Wirkkala, who died Feb. 24 of cancer at age 74.
Mr. Wirkkala was born Nov. 9, 1926, in Deming, Wash. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. He lived in Carson, Wash., from the 1960s until about 1992, when he moved to Hillsboro. He was a diesel mechanic for several companies, including Wood Tractor in Portland, retiring from the Skamania County Road Department in 1988. In 1998, he moved to Newberg. He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Stevenson, Wash. In 1950, he married
Dorothy Rinell; she died in 1991.
Survivors include his daughters, Cheryl Spencer, Debra Wirkkala and Wendy Harvath; son, Jeff; brothers, Walter, Ernest and Edwin; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Interment is in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Lutheran Family Service of Yamhill County. Arrangements are by Young's Funeral Home.
