John Bailey
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Gresham Free Methodist Church for John Bailey, who died Jan. 16 at age 85. Mr. Bailey was born April 22, 1915, in Cordova, Ala. During the Depression, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Alabama. He moved to Vanport in 1941, and to Gresham in 1951, and was a welder for Esco for 25 years before retiring in 1977, when he moved to La Pine. He moved to Gresham in 1988 and was a member of the church. In 1938, he married
Louise Leath.
Survivors include his wife; son, Jerry; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Private interment will be in Gresham Pioneer cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to his church. Arrangements are by Bateman-Carroll Funeral Chapel.
Natalie Amato Ballard
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Mt. Scott Funeral Home for Natalie Amato Ballard, who died Jan. 15 at age 76. Recitation of the rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. Mrs. Ballard was born April 15, 1924, in Portland. Her maiden name was Amato. She graduated from Washington High School in 1942. She was a secretary for the U.S. Navy during World War II and later for Mail-Well Envelope until the 1950s. She was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church. She lived in Salem, Wilsonville, Rockaway Beach and Sheridan before moving to Mackey, Idaho, in 1987. In 1980, she married
Merle Ballard; he died in 1993.
Survivors include her sisters, Julie M. Amato and Helen J. Draper.
Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Catholic cemetery.
Ronald Dean Ecoff
A service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Willamette National cemetery for Ronald Dean Ecoff, who died Jan. 13, apparently of a heart attack, at age 43. Mr. Ecoff was born Sept. 1, 1957, in Milton, Fla., and was raised in Portland. He graduated from Grant High School in 1976. He was a pill packer for Don Hall Laboratories, worked as a concession worker for the Music Box Theater and was a stock person for the St. Vincent de Paul Rehabilitation Center for the past three years until illness forced his retirement in about 1994. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his father, Robert D. Sr.; brother, Robert D. Jr.; and sisters, Shannon C. Johnson and Sandra D. Ecoff.
Arrangements are by Mt. Scott Funeral Home.
Ernest August Fischer
Ernest August Fischer died Jan. 3, 2001, at age 94. A memorial gathering will be held later. Mr. Fischer was born Sept. 1, 1906, in Fischers Mill. He was a handyman and lived in the Willamette area of West Linn for more than 55 years. In 1933, he married
Thelma M. DeBok; she died in 1987.
Survivors include his sons, Merlin and Darrell; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Interment is in Mountain View cemetery in Oregon City. Arrangements are by Holman-Hankins-Bowker & Waud.
Reginald Buddy Gage
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Holman-Hankins-Bowker & Waud Funeral Home for Reginald Buddy "Bud" Gage, who died Jan. 15 at age 69. Mr. Gage was born July 9, 1931, in West Linn. He graduated from Oregon City High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War. He was a transportation supervisor for Oregon City and Molalla high schools for 32 years, retiring in 1985. He moved to Woodburn in 1996. In 1993, he married
Remedios Dotimas.
Survivors include his wife; son, Norman; daughter, Julie; sisters, Eileen Gage and Geraldine Palmer; brothers, Charles Hadley and Wayne Gage; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
James R. Goff
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Willamette National cemetery for James R. "Jim" Goff, who died Jan. 16 at age 75. Mr. Goff was born March 3, 1925, in Portland. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany. He was the owner of G.M. Excavating, retiring in 1983. In 1942, he married
Mary Hull.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Lucille Erickson and Kathryn Manos; sons, Jimmy and Jerry; sister, Burnis McClanahan; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. One grandchild died earlier.

Thomas Gordon Grier
A memorial gathering will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Holy Family Catholic Church, Celebration Hall, for Thomas Gordon Grier, who died Jan. 14 at age 77. Mr. Grier was born Sept. 29, 1923, in Portland. He attended Lincoln High School and graduated from Benson Polytechnic School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was an engineer for the SP&S; Railroad, which became Burlington Northern, for more than 40 years before retiring in 1983. In 1953, he married
Jacquelin Adams.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Gordon, David and Michael; daughter, Kathleen Baldock; brother, Dugald; and six grandchildren.

Oren William 'Bill' Hays
Oren William "Bill" Hays died Jan. 13, 2001, of cancer at age 71. There will be no service.
Mr. Hays was born May 6, 1929, in Portland, where he lived all his life. He graduated from Grant High School, where he was an all-star baseball player. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force. He received his degree from Oregon College of Education and later earned master's degrees in mathematics and science at the University of Oregon. He was a junior high and middle school teacher in the Parkrose School District and coached golf and baseball at Parkrose Heights Junior High. In the early 1960s, he coached the first girl's junior high basketball team in the Parkrose School District. A past president of the Parkrose Faculty Association and a member of the Oregon Education Association, he retired from teaching in 1985. He married
Evelyn Jean Cutler in 1975. He was previously married
to Nancy B. Hays (Wright); they later divorced.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Jean H. Brady and Sally A. Riedi; sons, Thomas R. and James W.; brother, Stanley; and four grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes.
Martin W. Henthorne
Martin W. Henthorne died Dec. 25, 2000, of congestive heart failure at age 85. A private service was held. Mr. Henthorne was born Feb. 6, 1915, in Estacada and was raised in South Dakota. He moved to Oregon City in 1936, and was a farm worker and logger. During World War II, he was a welder in the Portland shipyards. After the war, he was a grinder room worker for Crown Zellerbach in Oregon City until 1954, when he moved to a rural area near Custer, S.D., where he owned a cafe and motel. In 1957, he moved to Molalla and in 1958, moved to Hermosa, S.D., where he owned another cafe and later also a grocery store in Rapid City until 1964. He lived in Newport before moving in 1972 to Coquille, where he lived until last March, when he moved to Oregon City. In 1936, he married
Fern C. Griffey; she died in 1994.
Survivors include his daughters, Betty Schrader, Sharon Tyner and Carol Williams; son, Richard; sister, Hazel Lovell; brother, Henry; 18 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Interment is in Mountain View cemetery in Oregon City. The family suggests remembrances to Guide Dogs for the Blind, 32901 S.E. Kelso Road, Boring, OR 97009. Arrangements are by Superior Funeral Service Inc.
Hugh Richard Hurlburt
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in New Heights Baptist Church in Vancouver, Wash., for Hugh Richard Hurlburt, who died Jan. 14 of a heart attack at age 71. A cryptside service will precede the service at 11 a.m. in Lincoln Memorial Park Mausoleum in Portland. Mr. Hurlburt was born Oct. 17, 1929, in Kitsombiro, the Belgian Congo. In 1947, he immigrated to Wheaton, Ill. He attended Powellhurst Bible Institute in Portland in 1948 and moved to Portland in 1954. He worked for Consolidated Freightways and Safeway, managed Al's Appliance for several years, then was a self-employed handyman, doing business as Hughes Repair for the past 20 years and was an Amway distributor. He was a member of the church. In 1952, he married
Clarene Coulter.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Deena Hahn and Martha Hurlburt; brothers, John B., Horace and Winston; and one grandchild.

James Reece Jones
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Skyline Memorial Gardens for James Reece Jones, who died Jan. 15 at age 73. Mr. Jones was born May 28, 1927, in Salem. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. He then lived in Portland and was a long-haul truck driver until retiring in 1992. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. In 1947, he married
Ruth Bruch.
Survivors include his wife; son, Stephen; daughter, Denise Morgan; brother, Allan; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Louise C. Moodie
A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, in St. Therese Catholic Church for Louise C. Moodie, who died Jan. 15 at age 86. Mrs. Moodie was born Aug. 23, 1914, in Seattle. Her maiden name was Armanino. She moved in 1953 to Portland and was a homemaker and a 47-year member of the church. In 1942, she married
James P. Modie Sr.
Survivors include her husband; son, James P. Jr.; daughters, Madeleine Zywicki and Maureen Daudistel; sister, Helen Tracy; brother, Al Armanino; and eight grandchildren.

John Pat Morris
John Pat Morris died Jan. 11, 2001, at age 88. A private graveside service was held. Mr. Morris was born March 6, 1912, in Kansas City, Kan. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1946, he moved to Tigard and was an auto mechanic for Nine-T-Nine Towing, retiring in 1977. In 1936, he married
Daisy Priem; she died in 1997.
Survivors include his son, Larry Sr.; brother, Joe; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
