James-John Wilson Avery
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, in Cedar Mill Bible Church for James-John Wilson Avery, who died Jan. 3 in an automobile accident at age 21. Another memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, in Bauman Auditorium at George Fox University. Mr. Avery was born Feb. 4, 1979, in Edmonds, Wash., and lived in Bothell, Wash., before moving to Portland in 1988. He graduated from Sunset High School in 1997 and was a senior at George Fox University. He also was a part-time waiter and front desk clerk at the Beaverton Courtyard Marriott. He was a member of the church.
Survivors include his parents, David and L. Louise; sisters, Rebecca Avery and Brenda Rosencrans; brother, Mark; and grandparents, John R. Gates and Eleanor Gates.
Private interment will be in Skyline Memorial Gardens. The family suggests remembrances to a memorial fund at his church. Arrangements are by Skyline Funeral Home.
Ella A. Erickson
Ella A. Erickson died Dec. 25, 2000, of cancer at age 78. A memorial service was held. Mrs. Erickson was born Jan. 15, 1922, in Arlington, S.D. Her maiden name was Haufschild. She graduated from Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, S.D., before moving to Portland in the 1940s. A bookkeeper, she worked for Jantzen Knitting Mills, Lloyd Center, Molded Container and Coast Cutlery before retiring. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. In 1949, she married
Raymond W. Erickson; he died in 1985.
Survivors include her daughter, Raylene G.; son, Gregory W.; brothers, Ross Haufschild, Lynn Haufschild and Fred Haufschild; and sister, Elizabeth Larson.
Interment is in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the church. Arrangements are by Ross Hollywood Chapel.
James Gaddie
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in St. Mark Baptist Church for James Gaddie, who died Jan. 4 at age 87. Mr. Gaddie was born April 12, 1913, in Pine Bluff, Ark. He was raised in Arkansas and moved to Portland in the 1940s and was a maintenance worker for Sears and Roebuck until retiring in 1970. He was a longtime member of the church. In 1954, he married
Lottris Ross; she died in 1991.
Survivors include his daughter, Vernetta Ollison; sister, Eldora Curry; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Providence Hospice. Arrangements are by Portland Funeral Alternatives.
Lillian G. Jackson
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in Peace Lutheran Church in Astoria for Lillian G. Jackson, who died Jan. 1 of congestive heart failure at age 89. Mrs. Jackson was born July 31, 1911, in Portland and moved to Knappa in 1917. Her maiden name was Merrill. She was a homemaker and lived in Astoria from 1934 until 1996, when she moved to Portland. She was a member of the church. In 1934, she married
Theodore Jackson; he died in 1991.
Survivors include her sister, Claudia A. Ray; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Merrill and Ida Merrill.
Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery in Astoria. The family suggests remembrances to her church. Arrangements are by Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary.
Royal 'Reid' MacDonald
Royal "Reid" MacDonald died Dec. 20, 2000, at age 75. There will be no service. Mr. MacDonald was born May 12, 1925, in San Francisco and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He lived in Salem and Portland and over the years worked as a cab driver, a gas station employee, a store clerk and, in the last years of his life, a security guard for US West. In 1989, he married
Virginia Newberry. He was married
twice previously; each ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Marcia Lane and Kathy Jones; son, Richard; stepson, James Mulberry; stepdaughters, Linda Beegle and Bonnie Holtgrew; sisters, Charlene, Betty, Maryln and Patty; several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements are by Wilhelm Funeral Home.Margaret Marks~ A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Christ the King Catholic Church in Milwaukie for Margaret "Peg" Marks, who died Jan. 3 of Alzheimer's disease at age 85. Office of the dead will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the church. Mrs. Marks was born Jan. 3, 1916, in Portland, where she lived all her life. Her maiden name was Duer. She graduated from Franklin High School. She was a homemaker and also a school secretary for several parochial schools for many years. She was a past member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church and current member of Christ the King Catholic Church. She was a volunteer for Loaves & Fishes for several years. In 1940, she married
Frank Marks.
Survivors include her husband; sons, John, Thomas, Robert, Michael and James; daughters, Marilyn Murdoch, Diane Symes and Susan Marks; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements are by Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes.
Geneva Amelia Marshall
Geneva Amelia Marshall died Dec. 30, 2000, at age 90. No service will be held. Mrs. Marshall was born Dec. 13, 1910, in Quinn, S.D. Her maiden name was Steen. She moved to Oregon in 1936. A homemaker, she lived in Ontario, St. Helens, Cascade Locks, and Sherwood. She married
Virgil J. Marshall in 1936; he died in 1978.
Survivors include her brothers, Merle, Gaylen, Laverne and Harold; sisters, Gladys Mathews and Helen Bies; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Her son, Duane E., died in 1988.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Cascade Locks Senior Center. Arrangements are by Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel.
Catherine J. Meade
Catherine J. Meade died Dec. 30, 2000, at age 93. No service will be held. Mrs. Meade was born July 13, 1907, in London. Her maiden name was Janssen.
She immigrated in the 1930s to Vancouver, Wash., and then moved to Portland. She attended a beauty school and became a self-employed electrologist, retiring in 1975. In 1936, she married
Orlie Meade; he died in 1984.
Survivors include her sisters, Nellie Fegan, Florence Fontaine and Mary Sampson.
Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements were by Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes.
Theodore Newell
Theodore Newell died Dec. 29, 2000, in Oregon City at age 90. A service was held. Mr. Newell was born May 20, 1910, in Silver Lake, Wash., and moved to Portland in 1940. He graduated from Oregon Normal School and later received a master's degree from the University of Puget Sound and a doctoral degree from Portland State University. He was a teacher and principal in various Oregon towns and then in Tacoma, where he continued teaching as a substitute until he was 87. He lived in Tacoma for the past 25 years. He married
Louise McCall; she died in 1996.
Survivors include his daughters, Judith Conway and Suzanne Cheaney; brother, Vernon; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. His son, J. Joaquin, died in 1999.
Interment is in Whittle-Hubbard cemetery in Castle Rock, Wash. The family suggests remembrances to the American Heart Association. Arrangements are by Holman's Funeral Service.
Ruth Caryl Ouellette
Ruth Caryl Ouellette died Dec. 29, 2000, of emphysema and bronchitis at age 69. A private service will be held. Mrs. Ouellette was born Feb. 10, 1931, in Portland. Her maiden name was Snook. She graduated from Linfield College and was a social worker for Dammasch State Hospital from the late 1960s until retiring in 1987. She played violin and viola with the Chehalem Symphony and the Mittleman Jewish Community Center Orchestra. In 1959, she married
George L. Ouellette.
Survivors include her husband; sons, Pat and Jay L.; daughter, Dr. Laura Ouellette; and six grandchildren.
Interment will be in Portland Memorial Mausoleum. The family suggests remembrances to the Laura Fugere Ouellette Scholarship Fund, Dickinson State University, 291 Campus Drive, Dickinson, N.D. 58601.
Dorothy Mabel Salmonson
Dorothy Mabel Salmonson died Dec. 28, 2000, at age 89. A private service will be held. Mrs. Salmonson was born Sept. 15, 1911, in Glenwood. Her maiden name was Lilly. She moved to Washougal, Wash., as a child and graduated from Washougal High School. She was a homemaker. She moved to Vancouver, Wash., in 1990. In 1931, she married
J. Arnold Salmonson; he died in 1987.
Survivors include her daughters, Alice Faler and Jeanne Kinart; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to a favorite charity. Arrangements are by Straub's Funeral Home in Camas, Wash.
Fred R. Smith
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel for Fred R. Smith, who died Jan. 1 at age 81. Mr. Smith was born April 23, 1919, in Macksville, Kan., where he was raised. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific. Afterward, he owned a service station in Portland. He moved in 1972 to Newberg. He was a wholesale appliance warehouseman for Vinton Co. in Portland for 19 years until his retirement in 1982. In 1971, he was commodore of the Multnomah Channel Yacht Club. In 1962, he married
Helen Mastne.
Survivors include his wife; stepsons, Larry Mastne, Lowell Mastne, Donald Mastne and Dennis Mastne; 22 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Newberg FISH, 208 S. River St., Newberg, OR 97132.
Nathalin F. Taylor
Nathalin F. Taylor died Jan. 1, 2001, of a stroke at age 66. There will be no service. Mrs. Taylor was born May 7, 1934, in Portland and was raised in Delake and Portland. Her maiden name was Benefiel. She graduated from Girls Polytechnic High School and was a homemaker. In 1975, she married
William Taylor.
Survivors include her husband; son, Kenny Berlin; stepsons, Trey and Todd; stepdaughter, Caprice Anderson; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
