Phyllis Harrold Sampson
Phyllis Harrold Sampson, formerly of Ashland and Seaside, Ore., passed away May 14, 2003.
Born July 6, 1916, she was a native of Nebraska and was a graduate of Oregon State University and Oregon College of Education.
Ms. Harrold Sampson taught in elementary schools in Ashland and other Oregon communities for many years.
She is survived by her brother, Hal Harrold of La Mesa, Calif.; and sister, Loretta Borges of Dalton, Neb.
Private services and inurnment were held at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Portland.
Ida C. Burns
Ida Cora Burns, 92, of Ashland died at 12:30 a.m., Thursday, May 22 at Ashland Community Hospital. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Burns was born Nov. 22, 1910, to Sarah E. and Schuyler Gunter in Ashland. The family moved to Grants Pass in 1922. Mrs. Burns graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1929 and Oregon State University in 1934. She began working that year as librarian at Ashland Junior High School and later accepted a teaching position at Ashland High School.
In June, 1937, she married Ashland resident Philip Lee Burns and moved from the Rogue Valley for eight years before returning to Ashland in 1945.
In 1962 Mrs. Burns returned to teaching at AMS and was Dean of Girls until retiring in 1972. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Ashland Pinochle Club, and volunteered at the Ashland Community Hospital, Meals on Wheels, and the Ashland Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center.
Mrs. Burns enjoyed travel, camping, gardening, arts and crafts, quilting, and crocheting.
Survivors include five sons, Richard Burns of Roseburg; Bruce Burns of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jerome Burns of Kearneysville, W. Va., Martin Burns of Ashland, and Philip Burns of Orting, Wash; 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Burns was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerald, Clyde, and Merrill Burns; and two sisters, Myra Bailey and Beatrice Cornilsen.
Arrangements are under the direction of Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.
Nancy C. Knox
A memorial service will be held for Nancy C. Knox, 77, of Ashland, who died Thursday, May 22, 2003.
The memorial, officiated by the Rev. Scott Delgarno, will be at the Ashland First Presbyterian Church at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003.
Mrs. Knox was born April 14, 1926 in Whittier, Calif. There, she married Warren Knox on June 20, 1945. A homemaker and student counselor, Mrs. Knox moved to the Rogue Valley in 1991.
Mrs. Knox enjoyed reading, gardening, bridge, and community service. She was a member of the Philanthropic Education Organization (P.E.O.) and the Potpourri Luncheon Club.
Survivors include her husband, Warren B. Knox, of Ashland; two sons, Charles W. Knox of Irvine, Calif. and John W. Knox of Boise, Idaho; and her sister, Betty Dingle of Grass Valley, Calif. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lucinda Knox; and her brother Herbert S. Chambers, Jr.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.
Glendon Kale 'Jeff' Jefferies
Glendon Kale "Jeff" Jefferies, 83, of Medford, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, in Medford. A private memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Pastors Scott Dalgarno and Bill Kirkham of the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland will officiate. Inurnment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite Masonic charity.
Mr. Jefferies was born Jan. 24, 1920, in Paisley, Ore. to Charles A. and Melva Lewis Jefferies. He attended Paisley public schools and earned a bachelors degree in forest management form Oregon State University. On Aug. 5 1945, in Irvington, N.J., he married Norma Jean Shoemaker, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1961, and have lived in Ashland for 36 years.
Mr. Jefferies worked for the U.S. Forest Service from 1947 to 1980. He was the District Ranger in the Ashland Ranger District from 1961 to 1980.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1941 to 1947, achieving the rank of captain.
Mr. Jefferies was a 33rd-degree Scottish rite Mason. He was active in many lodges, including Ashland Lodge No. 23, where he was a life member and Past Master. He also served on the YMCA board, the United Way board, in the Lions Club and in Toastmasters.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, where he served as Elder and Deacon.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Jane Jefferies of Medford.
Arrangements are under the direction of Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.
Lois E. Holm
The memorial service for Lois Eunice Holm will be 5 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2003 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Ashland. Interment will be at the Lower Lake Cemetery in Lower Lake, Calif. Friends may call at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m.
Mrs. Holm, 84, of Talent, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at an Ashland foster home. She was born Jan. 24, 1919 at Rock Falls, Ill., the daughter of Meta and Charles Puels. She was raised in Rock Falls where she married Donald Holm on June 4, 1939. Mr. Holm preceded her in death in 1986.
Dr. and Mrs. Holm served on the mission field in Indonesia from 1950 to 1960 before moving to Clear Lake, Calif. They returned to the mission field, serving in Tanzania, Africa from 1977 to 1980. They lived in Grand Terrace, Calif. from 1980 to 1987 when Mrs. Holm moved to Talent. Mrs. Holm enjoyed gardening and was an active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond Holm of Portland, Ore., Edward Holm of Turlock, Calif., and Richard Holm of Marina, Calif.; two daughters, Linda Hulse of Ashland, and Karen Bray of Salt Lake City; sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, one brother, six sisters and an infant daughter.

Ophelia W. Prettyman
Ophelia W. Prettyman. 87, of Ashland, died Thursday, May 29, 2003 at the Ashland Community Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.
Wendy E. Martin and Roy M. Martin
Wendy E. Martin, 51, and Roy M. Martin, 50, of Salem and formerly of Ashland, died Monday, May 26, 2003 in a car accident near Tyler, Texas.
A funeral service for Mr. and Mrs. Martin will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 2, 2003 at the Kings Highway Cemetery in Milford, Conn.
A memorial service is scheduled to be held in Ashland at a later date.
Mrs. Martin was born on Jan. 1, 1952 in New Haven, Conn. to Ellen and Lester Roy of Milford, Conn.
Mr. Martin was born Nov. 14, 1953 in New Haven, Conn. to John and Elanor Martin from Florida.
The Martins married on April 28, 1972.
The couple moved to Ashland in 1986 where their children attended school. Mrs. Martin was an escrow technician working for Jackson County Title. She transferred to Land America Title office in Salem in 1995. Mr. Martin worked all over the country as an electrician and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for more than 30 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin moved to Salem in 1995 where they lived until earlier this month when they started traveling to job sites again.
Both were active members in U.S. Pony Club, Sun Catchers, and Sun Rovers. Mr. Martin was a member of the Scottish Rite of the Masonic Temple and a member of the Hillah Temple. The couple enjoyed traveling, family, and friends.
Mrs. Martin is survived by her brother Jack Martin of Santa Fe, N.M. Mr. Martin is survived by two brothers, Don Roy and Kevin Roy, both of Clarkston, Mich.
The couple is also survived by a daughter, Melissa Lockhart of Tyler, Texas; a son, Jason Martin of Anchorage, Alaska, and two grandchildren
